Man arrested for flying Jalur Gemilang upside down released

GEORGE TOWN: A hardware store owner, who was detained for allegedly displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down in front of his premises in Kepala Batas here, has been released on police bail.
Seberang Prai Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abd Rahman said the 59-year-old man, who was arrested on Saturday, was released yesterday after police recorded his statement .
"The store owner was released on police bail around 3.30pm yesterday.
"Overall, more than 10 individuals have had their statements recorded to assist in investigation into the matter.
"We have also completed the investigation papers for the case and have sent the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor's office today. We are waiting for further instructions," he said here today.
He was met after the handing over of duty ceremony for the new state police chief.
Bukit Aman Management Department (Administration) deputy director Datuk Azizee Ismail took over the post from acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin.
The event was witnessed by Bukit Aman Management Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid at the senior officer's mess here.
Elaborating, Anuar said police had opened three investigation papers for the case.
"We ensure that the investigation is being carried out transparently and we are currently waiting for the decision from the deputy public prosecutor's office regarding the prosecution for all three papers," he added.
Commenting on various quarters planning to hold a demonstration, Anuar said police had received information about it.
"We have taken steps to advise them not to proceed with the demonstration to avoid any disturbances in the area.
"Furthermore, we have already conducted investigations into the case," he said.
It was reported that police had arrested a 59-year-old man on Saturday night after a video showing a man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on social media.
The video, posted on Facebook around 12.30pm, showed the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident.
A total of 16 police reports had been lodged nationwide, with 12 of them in Penang and four in other states.

GELANG PATAH: A Pakistani man and a local woman have been arrested for their alleged involvement in motorcycle petrol theft at an apartment in Tanjung Kupang. Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan reported that the suspects were detained following a report lodged by a 28-year-old local woman. "In her police report, the woman stated that the incident occurred on Monday (Aug 11) at 7.30am in the parking lot of the apartment building," he said in a statement. The woman and her 29-year-old husband then discovered the male suspect siphoning petrol from their motorcycle. ACP Kumarasan noted that when confronted, the 38-year-old Pakistani man, accompanied by a 60-year-old woman, denied committing the theft. "Both suspects were detained with assistance from the apartment auxiliary police," he said, adding that policemen from the Tanjung Kupang police station arrested the duo upon arrival at the scene at 11am. Initial investigations revealed that the suspects had no previous criminal records and tested negative for drugs. Police seized two bottles of petrol and a pair of scissors, and the suspects will be brought to the Johor Baru court on Tuesday (Aug 12) for remand orders. ACP Kumarasan stated that the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. A two-minute and 19-second video of the motorcycle petrol theft was uploaded to the Facebook account of "Si Solihin."
