[UPDATED] Drugs found on man who stabbed cop

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who stabbed a policeman at Pudu Market recently was found with drugs, say police. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay revealed this after visiting the wounded policeman at the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) UKM in Cheras here today. "The suspect has a criminal record of 14 prior offences for crime and drugs. "The majority of the crimes were violent offences," he said, nodding when asked if the suspect was considered a habitual offender. Police believe he behaved aggressively because he was in possession of drugs at that time, Ayob added. Other senior policemen who visited Corporal Mohd Nadzri included acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, Bukit Aman Management Department deputy director Datuk Azizee Ismail, Wangsa Maju police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Lazim Ismail and Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidil Bolhassan. Meanwhile, Ayob said Nadzri was expected to recover from his injuries in two weeks. "It will be some time before he is back on active duty as he has been through a lot, considering the surgery. "Based on the doctor's briefing, he suffered a 3cm gash that penetrated 7cm into his abdomen. "No other vital organs were injured, except for his intestines. He is being monitored for internal bleeding." Asked if Nadzri was wearing a body-worn camera (BWC) at the time of the incident, Ayob said he was not. "We have requested that all our motorcycle patrol and patrol car unit personnel, as well as those on crime prevention rounds, be equipped with BWCs. "Such incidents show the importance of having these BWCs. Hopefully we will get enough of these to equip these personnel soon," he said, adding that 7,648 BWCs are already being used. He said there were plans to roll out another 10,000 units for phase two of the project. Nadzri was stabbed while conducting a routine crime prevention patrol at the Pudu Market area on Thursday. The incident occurred around 12.55pm when the victim and four other officers were inspecting a suspect on Jalan Yew. The suspect suddenly attacked Nadzri with a knife, stabbing him in the abdomen before fleeing. Nadzri was rushed to HCTM UKM for emergency treatment. Acting on information, police caught the 56-year-old suspect shortly after the incident. A search later found a knife measuring approximately 21.5cm and three transparent plastic packets containing yellowish powder and chunks, suspected to be drugs.

66 police personnel honoured for excellence

KUALA LUMPUR: Only police personnel with MyPerformance scores of 90 per cent and above were considered for the Excellent Service Awards this year. A total of 66 individuals, including rank-and-file personnel and police officers, were awarded for their exceptional service with the police force. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the evaluation included attendance records, frequency of medical leave and involvement in activities outside of official duties. He expressed confidence that the set criteria would help personnel continuously boost their efforts to be more proactive and competitive. "This is to provide quality service that meets the expectations of the nation and the public. "To achieve what we desire, we must have efforts and determination," he said at Bukit Aman today. He said competent, excellent and dedicated personnel are the main strength of the force. Razarudin said this spirit should continue to be instilled among members, in line with the goal of enhancing service delivery quality and fostering a high-performance, innovative work culture. "In total, 10,534 officers and personnel received the recognition this year, based on a quota of eight per cent of the total active officers. "This includes 1,086 senior police officers, 8,486 lower-ranking police officers and 962 public service officers from various levels, including Bukit Aman, state contingents, brigades and training institutions," he said. Present were Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and Bukit Aman Management Department director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, who is also chairman of the event's Organizing Committee. Razarudin expressed appreciation to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) for sponsoring additional prizes for recipients in the form of National Education Savings Scheme certificates worth RM1,000 each. The shariah-compliant savings scheme is seen as an early education savings instrument for children, offering tax relief of up to RM8,000 and free takaful protection for savings of RM1,000 or more. "Recipients from families with a monthly household income not exceeding RM4,000 are also eligible to receive a Geran Sepadan of up to RM10,000 per family if they enrol in higher education institutions," he said. Razarudin acknowledged PTPTN's contribution of more than RM67,000 to the police force's welfare fund and the commitment of the organisers and working committee, who have made the award ceremony a success since 2019.
