Maha Kumbh: 30 dead and 60 injured in stampede, says DIG Vaibhav Krishna
Prayagraj: At least 30 people have been killed and 60 were injured in the pre-dawn stampede on Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj here, a top police officer said.
Twenty-five bodies have been identified and the rest are yet to be identified, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Kumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, said in a press conference.
'A total of 30 people have died unfortunately in the stampede that took place at the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj. Twenty-five bodies have been identified and the rest five are yet to be identified,' he said.
Among the deceased, four are from Karnataka, one from Assam and one from Gujarat, the DIG said.
Further, he said that 36 people were being treated at a local medical college.
'36 people are currently being treated at the local medical college. Keeping in mind the convenience of the devotees, the CM Yogi Adityanath has requested all Mahamadaleshwar, saints and Akharas to take their holy dips with some delay. The Amrit Snan of the Akharas has been concluded safely…' he said.
Giving details of the incident, the DIG said that the stampede occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning when a huge crowd on the Akhara Marg broke the barricade to take a holy dip.
'Before Brahma Muhurta, between 1 am to 2 am, a huge crowd gathered on the Akhara Marg. Due to this crowd, the barricades on the other side broke and the crowd ran over the devotees waiting to take a holy dip on the other side. About 90 people were taken to the hospital through ambulances but unfortunately, 30 devotees have died…' he said.
Meanwhile, to monitor the situation of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has postponed his visit to Delhi for the election campaign tomorrow.
Earlier, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, the President of Parmarth Niketan Ashram expressed condolences over the stampede and called it an 'unfortunate incident' and stressed the importance of following the instructions of the administration for the safety.
Saraswati said, "Whatever happened was very unfortunate. The administration's orders and messages should have been followed. People are coming in large numbers and taking a holy dip. I express my condolences to those who lost their lives."

CRPF deployed at New Delhi Railway station to manage crowd situations after stampede
New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police were deployed on Monday at the New Delhi Railway station to manage the crowd situation. The government is concerned about this issue. The railway department, as well as the central government, has done relief work, and whatever help could be given, they are also doing it," Sharma told ANI. He further said that it was sad to see that opposition leaders were only looking for their political advantage. "The only sad thing is that since the Kumbh had not even started, the opposition has been in search of some sad incident. This is sad that the opposition people start looking for their political benefit in sad incidents. I would say that Rahul ji, Akhilesh ji and all the opposition leaders should not do such things. Do not seek political gains from Kumbh, Sanatan, and tragic events. You have many issues to raise, but the way you try to defame (Maha Kumbh) is sad. Everyone should stand together in this tragic event. Everyone should stand with the families who are affected....." he further said. The Indian Railways has announced compensation of Rs10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for those with minor injuries.

India: Over 7.9 million devotees take holy dip in Triveni Sangam at Mahakumbh
Prayagraj: Over 7.9 million devotees have taken a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati) till 4:00 PM, as per the official data released on Friday. According to the Uttar Pradesh government, more than 200,000 Kalpavasis and approximately 7.7 million devotees visited the 2025 Mahakumbh Mela today. Meanwhile, more than 400 thousand people travelled through 140 trains on February 14, as per official data released. More than 491.4 million devotees have taken a dip in the Triveni Sangam till February 13, since the inception of Mahakumbh Mela. Earlier today, sanitation workers cleaned the ghats of the sacred Triveni Sangam on Friday. Visuals from Ram Ghat showed the workers cleaning the rivers with the help of nets. OSD Kumbh Akansha Rana said that 300 workers who were cleaning the rivers at various locations were creating a Guinness world record. She further stated that the message of the cleanliness drive was to ensure the cleanliness of the rivers and water bodies. Speaking to ANI, Rana said, "A Guinness world record is being created here, where 300 sanitation workers are engaged in river cleaning at various locations. We want to send a message to ensure the cleanliness of our rivers and water bodies. Tomorrow, we will create a world record in street sweeping, where 15000 sanitation workers will sweep the streets together..." Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives regarding traffic management at Maha Kumbh, emphasising that officers will be held accountable in case of congestion. The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) issued a statement saying, "CM Yogi Adityanath has given strict instructions regarding traffic management in Mahakumbh. Senior officers should come on the road themselves. There should be no traffic jams anywhere in Prayagraj Mahakumbh Nagar, Prayagraj district, Ayodhya Varanasi, and all the surrounding districts. Ensure accountability at every level. Wherever there is a traffic jam, the officers' accountability will be fixed." Meanwhile, a large number of devotees arrived in Varanasi on Friday morning for darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath temple after taking a holy dip at the sacred Triveni Sangam during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Varanasi DM S Rajalingam said, "The number of pilgrims is increasing each day. We are using all the resources to manage the crowd, including barricading. Schools up to class 8 are running online. The temple is in a congested area, which is a challenge. There is a crowd in the ghats, too. NDRF and divers are also deployed at the ghats." A huge crowd of devotees thronged the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela at Prayagraj on Friday to take a holy dip at the sacred Triveni Sangam.

India: PM Modi takes holy dip at Sangam in Mahakumbh
Prayagraj: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a holy dip at Triveni Sangam - the confluence of three rivers, Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati- at the ongoing Mahakumbh 2025 in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Wednesday morning. After reaching Prayagraj, the Prime Minister took a boat tour in the Yamuna River with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He was seen sporting a bright saffron-coloured jacket and blue trackpant. Mahakumbh 2025, which commenced on Paush Purnima (January 13, 2025), is the world's largest spiritual and cultural gathering, attracting devotees from across the globe. The Mahakumbh will continue until Mahashivratri on February 26. In line with his commitment to promote and preserve India's spiritual and cultural heritage, the prime minister has consistently taken proactive steps to enhance infrastructure and facilities at pilgrimage sites. Earlier, during his visit to Prayagraj on December 13, 2024, the prime minister inaugurated 167 development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore, improving connectivity, amenities and services for the general public. Meanwhile, by 8 am on Wednesday, over 3.748 million devotees had taken a holy dip in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati, increasing the deep spiritual fervour surrounding the grand religious includes more than 10 lakh Kalpvasis and 2.748 million pilgrims who arrived in the early hours to seek divine blessings. According to Uttar Pradesh government data, the total number of bathers since the commencement of Mahakumbh has exceeded 382 million as of February 4, underling the event's unparalleled spiritual and cultural significance. Earlier, on Tuesday, Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, during his visit to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh-2025, participated in several significant spiritual activities.
