Garland scores his 2nd goal of the game in OT to lift the Canucks past the Kings, 3-2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Conor Garland scored his second goal of the game at 4:28 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night.
Garland — who had a power-play goal in the second period — lofted a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle under the blocker of goalie David Rittich for his 16th goal of the season.
Nils Hoglander also scored and Kevin Lankinen stopped 24 shots to help the Canucks move past Calgary into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
Adrian Kempe and Warren Foegele scored in the third period for the Kings, who trailed 2-0 after two periods. Rittich made 14 saves.
Hoglander skated through Los Angeles' defense and put a wrist shot over Rittich's glove to put Vancouver on top midway through the first period.
Takeaways
Canucks: Star defenseman Quinn Hughes returned to the lineup after missing six games because of an undisclosed injury. Hughes, who leads Vancouver with 59 points, had an assist on the winning goal and had nearly 22 minutes of ice time.
Kings: Defenseman Drew Doughty missed the game due to a lower-body injury. Doughty had four points in eight games after missing the first 47 games after breaking his left ankle during the preseason.
Foegele tied it at 2 with 5:59 left in the third when he deflected Jordan Spence's shot past Lankinen. The goal was reviewed by replay for potential goalie interference, but it was determined none had occurred.

Russell Westbrook may have just 1 NBA team interested in signing him

2017 NBA MVP winner Russell Westbrook is currently a free agent, and with the upcoming season soon approaching, he is slowly running out of suitors. Westbrook has enjoyed a long and successful professional basketball career, earning nine All-Star appearances. After spending last season playing an important role with the Denver Nuggets, the two-time NBA scoring champion and three-time NBA assist leader is currently unemployed. Over the past few years, Westbrook has become a bit of a journeyman around the league. He has had stints with the Nuggets as well as the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, and Houston Rockets since he left the Oklahoma City Thunder. But suddenly running out of options, according to league insider Jake Fischer, there is reportedly just one team expressing interest in Westbrook. Listen to Fischer's latest reporting about Westbrook, embedded below. Here is what Fischer said: "We are still waiting to see what other comes could come in Sacramento before the Kings try to bring Russell Westbrook, and that's been the one home all along that we really have looked at for Russell Westbrook and it's still the home that I have heard earlier this week is the most likely outcome for Russell Westbrook if he's going to be in the NBA at all, honestly." This is fascinating for a few reasons, and one of them is that it was just 2022 when the organization brutally trolled Westbrook. Just a few seasons ago, meanwhile, the Kings had De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton as their two best guards. Already, however, they have potentially become the only team interested in Westbrook. Their currently guard depth is likely some combination of Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, Keon Ellis, Dennis Schröder, and Devin Carter. It would also be interesting to see Westbrook finally team up with his longtime friend DeMar DeRozan. The two players from Southern California sparked intrigue when they were caught having a conversation during a recent WNBA game between the Los Angeles Sparks and Las Vegas Aces. Curiously, though, the Kings currently do not have an available roster spot and would need to make additional moves if they wanted to sign Westbrook. Additionally, note that while Fischer said the Kings are Westbrook's most likely option is the Kings if he's going to play in the NBA at all, that does not suggest he will otherwise retire. He could also wait it out until another team needs guard depth during the season or he could make a ton of money playing somewhere overseas.

The Athletic writer ranks Lakers' offseason among worst in NBA

The Los Angeles Lakers' roster looks at least a little better right now than it did when they were shoved out of the first round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. At that time, they were dealing with a massive hole at the center position and a bench that was very anemic on the offensive end. To address those weaknesses, they signed center Deandre Ayton, who has been criticized for his lack of zeal on the defensive end but has career averages of 16.4 points on 59% field-goal shooting and 10.5 rebounds a game. They also brought in sharpshooting forward Jake LaRavia, former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart and rookie forward Adou Thiero. Some feel the Lakers could therefore be a dark-horse team in the Western Conference this coming season. But longtime NBA reporter David Aldridge isn't feeling that optimism. He ranked 29 of the league's 30 teams (he exempted the Golden State Warriors) by how they did this offseason in a recent article for The Athletic, and he placed L.A. at No. 24 while citing the loss of forward Dorian Finney-Smith as one reason for the low ranking. "We'll see if Ayton can still be a major difference maker after flaming out in Phoenix and Portland," Aldridge wrote. "Similarly, Smart isn't what he was in Boston, but many advanced stats show he's still one of the better defensive guards in the league – and he's better defensively than anyone else L.A. can roll out. Losing DFS, though, is a blow." The Lakers will certainly miss Finney-Smith, especially since he helped turn their season around when they acquired him in a late December trade with the Brooklyn Nets. He gave them the type of 3-and-D wing they had lacked, and his ability to guard multiple positions on the perimeter helped them claim the third seed in the Western Conference. He opted to join the Houston Rockets, a team most consider a legitimate contender now that it has future Hall of Fame forward Kevin Durant. But Smart could help replace at least some of the effective wing defense Finney-Smith brought, and LaRavia shot a higher rate from 3-point range (42.3%) than Finney-Smith (41.1%), albeit on significantly lower volume. A number of players for Los Angeles have some upward potential, and therefore, the team as a whole has the ability to prove its doubters wrong.
