McBride hails 'great win' as Antrim beat Clare in opener
Antrim forward Patrick McBride says hard work was the key to beating Clare 1-9 to 1-6 in the Allianz Football League Division Three opener at a wet and windy Corrigan Park on Sunday.
Conor Hand netted as Antrim led 1-7 to 1-1 at the break after Fionn Nagle's goal for the visitors.
Clare reduced the gap but scores from McBride and Conor Stewart helped Antrim secure the win.
"It's a great win - we've had a few tough pre-season matches but when you get a win like that it's all worth it," said McBride.
"Whoever worked the hardest was going to win that match, it was nothing to do with talent.
"Whatever team did the things that didn't require talent was going to win and we did it."
McBride benefited from the new rules when he scored a free after Clare were punished for only having two players in the opposing half when at least three are required.
"It's harsh but you have to adjust - [it's about} whoever adjusts quicker. If they make a mistake you have to punish it but you have to be constantly aware of it.
"Even bringing the keeper up - if your not tuned in it's an easy score for the other team.
"I'm enjoying it - I love the quick transition, I love the tap-and-go rule. Everything feels quicker."

Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals. And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 22 points at 4-21 to 0-11 with 12 minutes left after Nolan and Mark Rossiter added to their goal tally. To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up as quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points. Advertisement However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division Three. Fermanagh, who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.

The Arizona Cardinals made Trey McBride the highest-paid tight end in the NFL this offseason, inking him to a four-year extension worth $76 million. That record didn't last long, as the San Francisco 49ers signed tight end George Kittle to a four-year extension worth $76.4 million. His time at the top was only about three weeks. McBride isn't upset. "I think it was great that I had the title at one point, and that was obviously a huge milestone for me be the highest paid at my position at the time," he said on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM last week. "And I thought that was really cool." But he is happy about Kittle and actually hopes that his deal gets passed up by other guys. "George is much deserving of that, and I'm very excited for him.
