Vietnamese PM Chinh urges Petrovietnam to strive for regional top five ranking
The Prime Minister made the request on Sunday at the 4th Congress of the Party Committee of Petrovietnam for the 2025–30 term.
He acknowledged the ambitious nature of the target but stressed that it must be pursued with determination.
'It's a difficult goal, but no matter how difficult, we must strive to achieve it,' he said.
The congress gathered 238 official delegates representing nearly 14,000 Party members of the group.
Participants reviewed the outcomes of the 2020–25 term, set new strategic directions, and contributed feedback to key draft documents for the upcoming 14th National Party Congress.
According to the congress's report, the 2020–25 term was an exceptionally successful period for Petrovietnam's Party Committee.
Total revenue grew by an average of 14.5 per cent annually, 383 per cent higher than the initial target.
Pre-tax profit rose by 32.7 per cent per year, exceeding the plan by over 1,500 per cent, while State budget contributions surpassed expectations by 64 per cent.
In 2024, Petrovietnam surpassed the VNĐ1 quadrillion (US$40 billion) revenue mark for the first time, affirming its strength, resilience and pivotal role as a financial pillar of the national economy.
The group currently supplies over 75 per cent of the country's gasoline demand, more than 73 per cent of domestic fertiliser needs, over 75 per cent of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas market share, and 10 per cent of total national electricity output, underscoring its central role in Vietnam's essential energy supply chain.
Social responsibility remains a key focus, with Petrovietnam contributing over VNĐ3.5 trillion to social welfare programmes, building 10,262 houses, planting 1.2 million trees, and donating 25,700 units of blood, demonstrating its commitment as a national enterprise to the community and the country.
Looking ahead to the 2025–30 term, the Party Committee has set out a vision to develop a robust group with modern governance, strong competitiveness and leadership in energy transition and sustainable green growth.
The congress adopted 13 key tasks and solutions, including 11 specific performance targets.
Among them, modern corporate governance is identified as a core solution; science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as breakthrough drivers; and the integrated development of three strategic pillars of energy, industry and high-quality technical services as the overarching objective.
Petrovietnam is expected to build a comprehensive industrial–energy ecosystem that leads the market and plays a central role in Việt Nam's energy transition.
PM Chinh praised Petrovietnam's contributions to energy security, food security, economic security, social welfare and the protection of national sovereignty over maritime territories.
He commended the group's proactive efforts in reforming and improving policies for the oil and gas sector, modernising its governance model, and advancing science, technology, and innovation.
He also noted Petrovietnam's successful transformation from a national oil and gas company to a comprehensive national industrial–energy group.
The Prime Minister instructed the group to lead by example in innovation, scientific application, and digital transformation across all three of its pillars, including energy, industry and services.
He called for proactive global integration, in line with Politburo Resolution No 59, and contributions to private sector development under Resolution No 68.
Petrovietnam must deploy smart, modern, and synchronised governance solutions, optimise production efficiency, adapt flexibly to market fluctuations and seize opportunities from the restructuring of global supply chains to sustain double-digit growth in the years to come, he stressed. - Vietnam News/ANN

US envoy: Zelenskyy could join Alaska summit with Trump and Putin
WASHINGTON: The US ambassador to Nato said on Sunday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could attend this week's US-Russia summit in Alaska, as European leaders push for Kyiv to be part of the negotiations. Ambassador Matthew Whitaker was asked on CNN whether Zelenskyy might join US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday. "Yes, I certainly think it's possible," he said. "Certainly, there can't be a deal that everybody that's involved in it doesn't agree to. And, I mean, obviously, it's a high priority to get this war to end." The planned summit without Zelenskyy has raised concerns that a deal would require Kyiv to cede swaths of territory, which the European Union has rejected. In a flurry of diplomacy, Zelenskyy held calls with 13 counterparts over three days including Kyiv's main backers Germany, Britain and France. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Sunday he hoped and assumed that Zelenskyy would attend the summit. Whitaker said the decision would ultimately be Trump's to make. "If he thinks that is the best scenario to invite Zelenskyy, then he will do that," he said, adding that "no decision has been made to this point."

Ringgit poised for cautious trading as US tariff concerns linger
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is anticipated to trade cautiously against the dollar this week as investors monitor external developments, particularly regarding US tariffs. In a research note, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd stated that the ringgit should find support from domestic economic stability and a softer US dollar, likely holding near current levels. 'President Donald Trump's proposed chips and pharmaceutical tariffs will likely dampen sentiment in risk assets. Investors are also tracking pressure on BRICS and signs of strain in the US-China trade detente. 'Trump's rapid-fire policy moves and media headlines continue to drive market uncertainty,' it said. Hence, the research house said the ringgit traded higher last week, hovering within the range of 4.23 to 4.24 after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report pulled the greenback lower. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended last week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2420/2480 versus 4.2750/2815 previously. However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8720/8763 last Friday from 2.8407/8452 the previous week, declined against the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6208/6293 and eased versus the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.8752/8826. The ringgit also trended lower against Asean currencies. The local note slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 at the end of last week from 3.2907/2960, inched down versus the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0058/0319, slid versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.3/260.8 from 258.8/259.4 and edged down against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.35/7.36 in the preceding week. — Bernama

Bursa Malaysia likely to retain uptrend this week on positive data flow
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia is likely to retain its constructive bias into this week, with potential upside breakout above the 1,560 level, says an analyst. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the near-term momentum would remain path-dependent on investor sentiment and the regional risk premium. He noted that Malaysia's final second quarter of 2025 (2Q25) gross domestic product reading due on Aug 15 should confirm the economy's resilience, with forecast unchanged at 4.5% year-on-year. 'We view positive domestic macro prints and robust US corporate earnings should provide further underpinning for the index,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said investors are keeping a close watch on US-China trade relations. He said reports signalled talks might restart amid escalating tariff impacts and geopolitical uncertainty, both of which are influencing market trends. On a weekly basis, the index rose 23.63 points to 1,556.98 last Friday from 1,533.35 a week earlier.
