Trump says US will impose 15% tariff on South Korean imports
"I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has agreed to a Full and Complete Trade Deal with the Republic of Korea," Trump said on Truth Social.
The South Korean government could not immediately be reached for comment. Reuters has not verified the terms of a deal.
As part of the arrangement, South Korea would invest $350 billion in the United States in projects selected by Trump and purchase $100 billion of liquefied natural gas and other energy products, the U.S. president said.
It was not immediately clear how the investment deals would be structured or over what time frame. Trump said additional investments would be announced later.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will visit the White House "within the next two weeks" for a meeting with Trump, the U.S. president added.
Trump also said South Korea would accept American products, including cars, trucks and agriculture into its markets and impose no import duties on them.—Reuters

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque WASHINGTON, United States - Donald Trump on Saturday dropped his push for a ceasefire in Ukraine in favor of pursuing a full peace accord – a major shift announced hours after his summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin yielded no clear breakthrough. Prior to the high-stakes meeting in Alaska, securing an immediate cessation of hostilities had been a core demand of Trump and European leaders including Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will now hold talks with the US president in Washington on Monday. The shift away from an urgent ceasefire would seem to favor Putin, who has long argued for negotiations on a final peace deal -- a strategy that Ukraine and its European allies have criticized as a way to buy time and press home Russia's battlefield advances. "It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a peace agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere ceasefire agreement, which often times do not hold up," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform after the Alaska talks. Before the summit, Trump had warned of "severe consequences" if Moscow did not accept a ceasefire. In a call with European leaders on his flight back to Washington, Trump said the US was prepared to provide security guarantees for Ukraine -- an assurance German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hailed as "significant progress." But there was a scathing assessment of the summit outcome from the European Union's top diplomat Kaja Kallas, who accused Putin of seeking to "drag out negotiations" with no commitment to end the bloodshed. "The harsh reality is that Russia has no intention of ending this war any time soon," Kallas said. The New York Times, citing two European officials briefed on Trump's call with European leaders, said the president had expressed support for Putin's proposal for Ukraine to cede territory it controls to Russia in exchange for an eventual ceasefire. Zelenskyy back in White House The main diplomatic focus now switches to Zelenskyy's talks with Trump in Washington on Monday. An EU source told AFP that a number of European leaders had also been invited to attend. The Ukrainian president's last visit to the White House in February ended in an extraordinary shouting match, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly berating Zelenskyy for not showing enough gratitude for US help against the Russian invasion. Zelenskyy said Saturday after a "substantive" conversation with Trump about the Alaska summit that he looked forward to his Washington visit and discussing "all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war." In an interview with Fox News after his sit-down with Putin, Trump had suggested that the onus was now on Zelenskyy to secure a peace deal as they work towards an eventual trilateral summit with Putin. "It's really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done," Trump said. "And I would also say the European nations, they have to get involved a little bit, but it's up to President Zelenskyy." European pressure The leaders of France, Britain and Germany are due to host a video call Sunday for their so-called "coalition of the willing" to discuss the way forward. In an earlier statement, they welcomed the plan for a Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy summit, but added that they would maintain pressure on Russia in the absence of a ceasefire. "We will continue to strengthen sanctions and wider economic measures to put pressure on Russia's war economy until there is a just and lasting peace," the statement said. Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine raged on, with Kyiv announcing Saturday that Russia had launched 85 attack drones and a ballistic missile during the night. Back in Moscow, Putin said his summit talks with Trump had been "timely" and "very useful." "The conversation was very frank, substantive, and, in my opinion, brings us closer to the necessary decisions," he said. Comelec seeks 'overhaul' of Omnibus Election Code

Among the changes proposed by the Comelec are criminalizing nuisance candidacies, restricting candidate substitution to cases of death and disqualification, prohibiting premature campaigning once the certificate of candidacy (COC) has been filed, and updating campaign spending limits. It also proposed to amend the rules on party-list groups, restrict the number of seats that can be held, support underrepresented groups, and impose restrictions on campaign contributions. Garcia also took note of initiatives to ban political dynasties. 'Maaaring ito na ang tamang panahon na magkaroon ng tunay na batas upang maipatupad ang anti-political dynasty provision ng ating Saligang Batas,' he said. (This may be the right time to have a law to implement the anti-political dynasty provision of our Constitution.) The Comelec also sought authority to expand the COC filing requirements. House to ‘yield' probe on a flood control project if name of solon comes up

REUTERS/Eloisa Lopez The House of Representatives will "yield" its probe on an allegedly anomalous project if, during the course of its investigation, a member of the lower chamber is found to be involved, according to Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon. At a news forum on Saturday in Quezon City, Ridon said that if a member of the House is named during the probe, they 'will immediately recuse [the investigation] and yield it to, whether to an independent third party probe, if it will be formed, or to an executive led probe to make sure that there will be no conflict of interest or cover-up in the course of the tri-committee [hearings].' The House panel on Public Accounts chairman, however, clarified that the tri-com will not suspend its entire probe but will only 'recuse on a particular inquiry on a particular project if a name of a legislator came up.' 'For example, in project A, in the course of it there will be a whistleblower who will say, 'Congressman A took kickbacks from that project.' Obviously we will ask him [congressman] to explain and as soon as he gets to explain we will recuse and then endorse to the third party probe if it gets to be created or to the executive led probe,' explained Ridon. Ridon, who chairs the House Committee on Public Accounts which was tasked to investigate the anomalies on flood control projects, said his panel along with the committees on Public Works and Good Government are now awaiting the plenary's green light to begin the inquiry. 'This is not a personality led investigation, it is a project led investigation… We are going to do it on a project by project basis,' the lawmaker said at a news forum on Saturday in Quezon City. 'It's not a witch hunt, we have to be able to afford due process to anyone… Again, it should be on a project to project inquiry,' he said. With this, The lawmaker also said Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong is welcome to submit his information on anomalous projects once the tri-com hearings commence. Magalong earlier said he was waiting to be called to Congress after he said there were lawmakers receiving payoffs from infrastructure projects, including flood control programs. The mayor's statement came after Ridon challenged him to show proof, which will back up his claims that some congressmen are supposedly receiving 30% to 40% kickbacks in government projects. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. earlier disclosed that 20% of the total P545 billion budget of flood control projects was awarded to only 15 contractors. 'This is another disturbing assessment, statistic: 20% of the entire P545 billion budget napunta lang sa 15 na contractor. Sa 15 na contractor na 'yan, lima sa kanila ay may kontrata sa buong Pilipinas. Keep going. Ayan. Ito na 'yung listahan,'' Marcos said on Monday as he launched the website on flood control projects. Asked if these contractors have links to sitting government executives and officials, Marcos said the administration is still looking into it.
