Quantum computing could be the next big technology for investors, if it lives up to its promise. While quantum computing companies are getting a ton of attention from investors right now, I think it will likely be 2030 before it sees widespread commercial adoption.
I think the 2030s will be a golden age of quantum computing investing. Still, many investors are looking to get in now before all of the growth is baked into the stock prices of various quantum computing competitors.
Luckily, investors have a fantastic example of what to look for in a quantum computing investment by comparing it to the most successful computing company of this decade: Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA).
After taking a look, I think I've identified a company that could become the Nvidia of the 2030s.
Nvidia didn't cater to one specific client
First, let's look at the Nvidia traits that have made it such a dominant player in the artificial intelligence (AI) realm. The biggest factor I can see is that it's a neutral player, serving all customers. Nvidia didn't sell its graphics processing units (GPUs) to just one company, or partner to make a special GPU for another. Instead, it was focused on offering the best product possible, which other companies adopted as the standard.
If we're looking for that trait in a quantum computing company, it pretty much eliminates all of the big tech companies that are in the quantum computing arms race, as potential clients would have to stay locked into their ecosystems to gain access to their quantum computing services.
Now that we've narrowed it down to looking at the quantum computing pure plays, which of them follows Nvidia's lead the best?
Nvidia's GPUs allowed its clients to easily scale their use
Another huge factor that made Nvidia such a success story is that it offered a full solution. This ranged from leading software to connectivity equipment; having control over these ancillary products was key to Nvidia's success.
So, if you're looking for a company to fit Nvidia's mold, look for companies that have full-stack solutions. This allows quantum computing clients to purchase a full solution and deploy it rapidly without needing to buy additional equipment just to make it work.
Lastly, a company's quantum computing solution needs to scale to fit the Nvidia mold. Nvidia's GPUs can be connected to create nearly unlimited computing power.
I think IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) is setting itself up to the the Nvidia of the 2030s.
What makes IonQ like Nvidia?
IonQ offers full-stack solutions for its clients, providing the hardware and software necessary to utilize its product. It also offers consulting and training for its products, making it a one-stop shop for any company interested in deploying quantum computing power.
It also doesn't have barriers to scaling. One of the unique characteristics of using a trapped-ion approach (versus the superconducting approach that many others use) is that the particles used for quantum computing do not require cooling to absolute zero. Instead, it can be done at room temperature. Cooling anything down to absolute zero is an expensive process and could be a huge roadblock for scaling quantum computing.
Lastly, IonQ's architecture is designed to be scalable, with IonQ projecting that it could have a 1 million-qubit device someday simply by adding more computing modules.
I think this makes IonQ one of the most likely companies to follow in Nvidia's footsteps in the 2030s, although it's impossible to tell this far out whether the industry -- and IonQ -- will flourish. Its trapped-ion approach could be a dead-end route for reasons that nobody could foresee right now. But, if it works out, the advantages it has over a superconducting approach could cause it to become the leading quantum computing technology during the 2030s.

Apple's $704 Billion Decade-Long Buybacks Exceed Market Cap Of All But 13 Companies Worldwide

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Tim Cook-led Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has amplified its shareholder value for several years with a robust share repurchase program, so much so that only 13 firms worldwide have a market capitalization higher than the shares that AAPL has bought back. What Happened: Data shared by the Chief Market Strategist at Creative Planning, Charlie Bilello, shows that Apple has bought back $704 billion in stock over the past decade. That $704 billion figure exceeds the market capitalization of all but 13 companies globally and is greater than that of 488 companies in the S&P 500 index. Trending: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — According to the chart shared by him, AAPL's current outstanding shares amount to 14.84 billion units, while it has bought back 95.66 billion shares in 10 years, on a trailing like Eli Lilly And Co. (NYSE:LLY), Visa Inc. (NYSE:V), Mastercard Inc. (NYSE:MA), and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) have a market capitalization lower than that of Apple's buybacks in the last 10 years. However, experts have stated their frustration with Apple's share repurchase strategy. CNBC's 'Mad Money' host Jim Cramer has reiterated that the buybacks aren't working, and they need to make an acquisition in the AI space with its cash primary reason for promoting this acquisition of the AI-powered search engine, Perplexity AI, stems from the U.S. government's antitrust ruling against Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) expected in this month. It could force Google to end default search deals with Apple's Safari It Matters: Wedbush Securities' Tech Bull, Daniel Ives, popularly known as Dan Ives, shares the same views as Cramer. In July, Ives said that Apple's "treadmill approach" needs to end, and it needs to eye a big splashing partnership with either Perplexity or Anthropic. According to him, "It's a matter of when and not if, in other words, Apple needs to make a move, and it's clear. Perplexity to me seems like a no-brainer, relative to how it would fit." "The reason the stock can go up in the second half of the year is that I think Apple is going to make a move. I know they still haven't done an acquisition since Beats, being the biggest one, but now is the time for Cook and Cupertino to move away from the treadmill approach,' he added. Ives reiterated Apple with an Outperform and a $270 price forecast on Wednesday after it announced a new $100 billion commitment to increase investments in the U.S., bringing the company's total commitment up to $600 billion. Sam Altman addresses ‘bumpy' GPT-5 rollout, bringing 4o back, and the ‘chart crime'

During a Reddit ask-me-anything session on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and key members of the GPT-5 team were peppered with questions about the new model and requests to bring back its previous model, GPT-4o. They also asked Altman about the most embarrassing – and perhaps funniest – snafu in the presentation, the 'chart crime.' One of the new features that GPT-5 rolled out is a real-time router that decides which model to use for a particular prompt, either responding quickly or taking additional time to 'think' through answers. But multiple people in the AMA on the r/ChatGPT Reddit complained GPT-5 wasn't working as well for them as 4o did. Altman said the reason GPT-5 seemed 'dumber' was the router wasn't working properly when it was rolled out Thursday. 'GPT-5 will seem smarter starting today. Yesterday, we had a sev and the autoswitcher was out of commission for a chunk of the day, and the result was GPT-5 seemed way dumber. Also, we are making some interventions to how the decision boundary works that should help you get the right model more often. We will make it more transparent about which model is answering a given query,' Altman promised. Still, people on the AMA lobbied so hard to bring 4o back for Plus subscribers that Altman promised to at least look into that. 'We are looking into letting Plus users to continue to use 4o. We are trying to gather more data on the tradeoffs,' he wrote. And Altman also promised, 'We are going to double rate limits for Plus users as we finish rollout.' This should give people a chance to play and learn the new model, adopt it to their use cases without worry of running out of monthly prompts. Predictably, he was also asked about the wildly inaccurate chart the team presented during the live presentation that quickly became the butt of many 'chart crime' jokes. The chart presented a lower benchmark score with a much taller bar. Altman didn't answer questions about the chart during the AMA, but on Thursday he did call the chart a 'mega chart screwup' on X. Others noted the charts in the published blog post were correct. But the damage was done. Jokes ensued about using GPT for charts in a corporate presentation. GPT-5 reviewer Simon Willison, who had early access and generally liked the model's performance, also pointed out that turning data into a table was 'good example of a GPT-5 failure.' In any case, Altman promised fixes to the items that seemed to concern people the most. He ended the AMA with a promise that 'We will continue to work to get things stable and will keep listening to feedback.'
