Why Russell Martin ticks the boxes for Rangers as brief Ibrox stint a vital lesson if he lands top job

The Ibrox club are on the verge of picking a new boss with Martin and Davide Ancelotti in the running
Steven Naismith believes Russell Martin is the outstanding candidate to become Rangers' new manager.
The Ibrox club are on the verge of picking Philippe Clement's successor, with Martin and Italian coach Davide Ancelotti in the running.

New Gers sporting director Kevin Thelwell has told fans to expect an announcement within days.

And Naismith is adamant that his former Norwich and Scotland team-mate Martin is perfectly suited for the job.
The ex-Hearts gaffer says Martin is the right type of character to lead the Ibrox club under their new American owners.
And he claims Martin's brief spell as a Rangers player seven years ago will be vital if he's chosen to take over.
Naismith told Record Sport: 'I think Russell would be a good appointment for Rangers.
'From the names that have been mentioned, Russell ticks most boxes.
'He's got a clear playing style and he's been at the club before.

'He's been a manager for a number of years now and anyone who has reservations will quickly see what he wants to do - and how he wants to do it.
'Players will back him because it's an enjoyable way to play.

'Is he a big enough personality, leader and character to do the Rangers job? I think he is.
'He'll have an idea from his short stint at the club as a player as to what's required.
'That was during a poor spell for Rangers so he'll have understood the frustrations and expectations.

'He'll have felt the backlash that came with it.
'In terms of his character, he's shown that already in his managerial career.
'Russell has been told he can't do certain things with a team or urged to do other things.
'But he's got a strong mind on him and has never bowed to that.
'It has got him from MK Dons to Swansea, to then taking Southampton into the Premier League.'

Russell Martin strikes next Rangers manager agreement as appointment timeline and backroom staff revealed

Record Sport can reveal that the former Southampton boss has agreed in principle to become Philippe Clement's successor Russell Martin's imminent return to Ibrox has been agreed in principle and is expected to be confirmed in the next 48 hours. Record Sport understands Martin's appointment as Philippe Clement's successor is now in the final stages pending contracts being rubber stamped and the make-up of his backroom team approved, ratified and signed off by the Ibrox club's new board. ‌ It's understood Martin's long term assistant boss Matty Gill has been lined up to follow the 39-year-old north of the border, after the pair linked up together at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton. ‌ And, as we revealed last week, former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross has also been earmarked for a key role in the coaching staff if Martin lands the top job, with further additions expected. Martin and his men have emerged as the clear front-runners following a major plot twist in talks with rival target Davide Ancelotti. It's understood, over the last two days, Ancelloti has suddenly appeared to cool on the prospect of making the move from Madrid to Glasgow's south side. Ancelotti had seemed in pole position after holding a series of discussions with sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, football adviser to the San Francisco 49ers. It's understood incoming chairman Andrew Cavenagh has also been involved in the final stages of those talks. But sources in Milan have now confirmed to Record Sport that Ancelotti's camp began to stall on a move to Ibrox at the start of this week. ‌ The timing seems significant as it coincides with dramatic developments at the San Siro and the news that Simone Inzaghi is on the verge of quitting Champions League runners-up Inter Milan for a lucrative move to Saudi outfit Al-Hilal. Inter immediately set their sights on Como boss Cesc Fabregas to fill Inzaghi's shoes - and that appears to have been a game changer in terms of Ancelotti's own position. ‌ The 36-year-old - who is ready to take his first steps into management after following his father Carlo around some of the greatest clubs in Europe - had initially been linked with Como when it seemed Fabregas might be on his way to Bayer Leverkusen. Reports of Como's interest in Ancelotti began to circulate almost immediately after it was leaked to media outlets in Madrid that Rangers were also involved in advanced discussions with Ancelotti Jr. But within days it was confirmed that the Bundesliga big guns had turned to former Manchester United flop Erik ten Hag to replace Xabi Alonso - who has taken over from Ancelotti Snr at the Bernabeu. ‌ Those managerial dominoes appeared to fall in favour of Rangers and their pursuit of the young Ancelotti. But that all changed again over the weekend when Como learned of Inter's interest in Fabregas. Martin, meanwhile, has been holding off on accepting an offer to take over from Ruud van Nistlerooy at Leicester City while the uncertainty has played out across the continent. ‌ And he now appears to be on the brink of turning his back on the King Power to finalise a move to Rangers instead. Ibrox sources have remained adamant throughout that the process is not yet complete and that further interviews have been scheduled for this week. But that messaging has begun to soften. And with Martin apparently emerging as the last man standing and a financial agreement already thrashed out, the former Scotland international could be in place at Auchenhowie before the weekend. Rangers players will report back to the club's Auchenhowie HQ on June 23 to begin pre-season preparations which means Cavenagh's new look regime is already racing against the clock ahead of a major squad rebuild and the beginning of the next campaign.

'Martin would use Southampton hurt to his advantage'

Russell Martin will use the hurt he suffered at Southampton in a positive way should he become new Rangers head coach, according to his former boss Chris MK Dons and Swansea manager Martin is believed to be the frontrunner for the vacant post at many Rangers fans are underwhelmed by the potential appointment of Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player in Govan in who was captain under Hughton at Norwich, brought Southampton up to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2024 but was sacked by December as they headed back towards the Championship with one win from his first 16 Hughton offered a glowing character reference, saying on Talksport: "If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known for playing a certain way, very expansive, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds."But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far."I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect he can."I think he's had a few offers, so this is somebody that's still very respected in the game. He's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch."He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings we had and he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players."So it's no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics."

Lisandro Martinez makes Man Utd transfer decision after surprise Napoli links

Lisandro Martinez has no intention of leaving Manchester United despite becoming the subject of interest from Serie A champions Napoli, according to reports. Martinez is still working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury he suffered in February and may not feature again until 2026. Despite that, reports in Italy suggested that the Argentine international was attracting interest from Napoli as they look to bolster their defensive options. The Italian giants enjoyed great success buying from United last summer, recruiting Scott McTominay for a cut-price fee of £25million. McTominay then went on to play a guiding role for Antonio Conte's side, scoring 12 times as Napoli saw off Inter Milan to win the title. However, Napoli are unlikely to be able to repeat the trick this time around, with the Daily Mail reporting Martinez is more than happy at Old Trafford and has no desire to move. Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old had established himself as a key part of Ruben Amorim's defence and is seen as one of the experienced leaders within the United squad. While Martinez may not join, however, Napoli could have more success trying to sign Alejandro Garnacho who has fallen out of favour with Amorim. The Serie A side were interested in signing Garnacho in January but were unable to reach an agreement with United at the time. The Red Devils have since lowered their asking price to £60m, but Garnacho appears to have his heart set on staying in the Premier League amid interest from Chelsea. More Trending Garnachp is one of several players that could leave Old Trafford this summer as United look to raise funds for another costly rebuild. Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are all set to leave the club when they return from their respective loans. The club will also reportedly entertain offers for Kobbie Mainoo, while Rasmus Hojlund could be set for a move to Italy, after Inter were credited with an interest in the young striker.
