Murali calls Tharoor's Modi praise ‘quite disgusting' in first open attack from Kerala
In the first open criticism from a senior Congress leader in his home State of Kerala, K. Muraleedharan on Tuesday targeted Shashi Tharoor over his recent praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling the remarks 'quite disgusting.'
Addressing reporters, Mr. Muraleedharan said it was troubling that a member of the party's working committee would continue to praise a political rival, especially during election season.
'He is a member of the working committee. It is quite disgusting that a member of the working committee continues to praise the political opponent of the Congress,' he said.
Mr. Muraleedharan's comments came a day after Mr. Tharoor, in a newspaper article, described Mr. Modi's 'energy, dynamism, and willingness to engage' as a 'prime asset' for India on the global stage, adding that the Prime Minister deserved greater support.
Mr. Tharoor's praise for Mr. Modi came at a time when the Congress has consistently been attacking the BJP-led Centre over its foreign policy, alleging that Indian diplomacy is being 'shattered' and the country stands 'isolated' globally.
Asked whether disciplinary action was needed against Mr. Tharoor, he replied, 'Whether action should be taken or not—let the high command decide and inform us.'
Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram last week, Mr. Tharoor said he had differences of opinion with some in the party leadership but refused to speak about those in light of the Nilambur Assembly byelections. The veteran leader said the Congress, its values, and its workers are very dear to him.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has called for strong action against actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh and the makers of his upcoming Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 for featuring Pakistani actor Hania Aamir in the cast. The film body has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that Dosanjh, along with producers Gunbir Singh Sidhu, Manmord Sidhu, and director Amar Hundal, be blacklisted from the Indian film industry. It also asked for their passports to be revoked and Indian citizenship cancelled. The move comes after the film's trailer revealed that Hania Aamir, known for her roles in Pakistani dramas, plays a part in the horror comedy. The film is set to release overseas only. FWICE issued a strong statement, saying: 'The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) expresses its strongest condemnation and absolute outrage against actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, Gunbir Singh Sidhu, Manmord Sidhu and Director Amar Hundal who have brazenly insulted the Indian film industry and disrespected national sentiment by hiring Pakistani actress Ms. Hania Aamir for their upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3… We respectfully urge that their passports be revoked without delay, and that they be permanently barred from availing any rights, privileges, or representation associated with Indian citizenship and national identity." The film body called this casting choice 'a shameful betrayal of our country and its people," especially in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack. They alleged that the inclusion of Aamir was in direct violation of their ban on Pakistani artists. FWICE further described Hania Aamir as a 'vocal propagandist against India," accusing her of mocking the Indian armed forces and defending acts of terrorism after Operation Sindoor. On Tuesday, FWICE also submitted appeals to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), asking them to deny Sardaar Ji 3 a release certificate in India. India, South Africa sign pacts on submarine cooperation
India and South Africa signed two agreements in the domain of submarine cooperation during the 9th Joint Defence Committee (JDC) meeting held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Monday and Tuesday. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh led the Indian delegation to the meeting, during which he highlighted India's growing prowess in defence manufacturing and exports and reiterated India's commitment to strengthening relations with South Africa. Areas of mutual interest were discussed and the way forward for further strengthening India-South Africa relations were also identified at the meeting, a Defence Ministry statement said. 'The Defence Secretary recalled the historic relations with South Africa and expressed satisfaction on the significant progress made in bilateral defence cooperation,' it said. The South African side was headed by the acting Secretary for Defence, Dr Thobekile Gamede. The Ministry statement said the meeting began with remarks of the two co-chairs setting the agenda and providing a broad guidance to the two sub-committees that report to the JDC. The two sub-committees on Defence Policy and Military Cooperation; and Defence Acquisition, Production, Research and Development reported the outcome of the discussions to the JDC.
