Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial to fight in Pacquiao-Barrios undercard
Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial is fulfilling his dream of fighting alongside Manny Pacquiao as he will be in one of the undercard fights in Pacman's match against Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The 29-year old Marcial will take on 30-year old American Alexis Gaytan in an eight-round middleweight non-title bout on the same date, according to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons.
'Ever since I started boxing, the reason I started I was so inspired by Manny Pacquiao as a kid when I watched him fighting on TV,' Marcial said.
'It was my dream to always fight along and eventually and to be on a card with Manny Pacquiao.'
Marcial bagged the bronze medal in the Olympics back in 2021 in Tokyo, but fell short in his bid for another medal last 2024 in Paris.
As a professional, Marcial has a 5-0 record, with three knockouts. He last fought professionally in March 2023 in the Philippines where he knocked out Thailand's Thoedsak Sinam in the fourth round.
Gaytan, meanwhile, has a 17-10 record with six knockouts.
Marcial arrived in the United States on Tuesday, along with Jerwin Ancajas, Mark Magsayo, and Jonas Sultan, to join Pacquiao in training camp.

(REUTERS/Mike Blake) WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Tuesday creating a White House Olympics task force to handle security and other issues related to the 2028 summer Olympic games, an administration official told Reuters. The task force, made up of members from Trump's cabinet and government agencies, will coordinate federal, state and local government work on transportation, the official said. It also will "streamline visa processing and credentialing for foreign athletes, coaches, officials, and media," the official said in an email. The United States will host the Olympics in Los Angeles in three years. Trump, a Republican who lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden, has expressed pleasure that his second term will coincide with the Olympics and the World Cup. "During his first term, President Trump was instrumental in securing America's bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The president considers it a great honor to oversee this global sporting spectacle in his second term," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement on Monday. Last month organizers of the Los Angeles games released the first look at the Olympic competition schedule. The city had also hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. "The creation of this task force marks an important step forward in our planning efforts and reflects our shared commitment to delivering not just the biggest, but the greatest Games the world has ever seen in the summer of 2028,' Casey Wasserman, the chair and president of LA28, said in a statement. —Reuters

Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys advance in Montreal while Iga Swiatek falls

(Photo: David Kirouac-Imagn Images/REUTERS) Japan's Naomi Osaka roared into her first quarterfinal in 19 months with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in National Bank Open play on Sunday afternoon in Montreal. The unseeded Osaka, who knocked off 14th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova of Russia and No. 22 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia just to reach the fourth round, needed just 49 minutes to polish off the unseeded Sevastova. Osaka's fastest victory of her career came in 2016 in Brazil, where she dispatched Ana Sofia Sanchez 6-1, 6-1 in 42 minutes. "I had a solid plan coming in here," Osaka said on Sunday, "and it happened to work out very well." The former world No. 1 registered five aces to Sevastova's none and converted all five of her break points to claim her first quarterfinal berth in a WTA 1000-level or Grand Slam tournament since Doha in February 2024. Osaka next will face 10th-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, a 6-4, 6-1 victor over fifth-seeded Amanda Anisimova of the United States in the last match Sunday night. Svitolina converted 4 of 7 on break-point opportunities and saved 8 of 9. Denmark's Clara Tauson, the 16th seed, knocked out second-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland by a 7-6 (1), 6-3 count to reverse the results of their meeting last month at Wimbledon, when Swiatek won 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals on her way to the title. Tauson, 22, saved seven of nine break-point opportunities and converted three of her five chances. Swiatek, who had won nine straight singles matches, had slightly more aces (8-6) and double faults (5-4). Tauson will face sixth-seeded Madison Keys, who secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic. Keys needed 2 hours, 20 minutes to prevail as she fought off two match points with Muchova holding a 5-4 lead in the third set. Keys then broke Muchova at 5-5 with a beautiful passing shot. "I'm really happy to get that win," Keys said. --Field Level Media/Reuters
