REUTERS/Maye-E Wong Olympic bronze medalist Eumir Marcial is fulfilling his dream of fighting alongside Manny Pacquiao as he will be in one of the undercard fights in Pacman's match against Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 29-year old Marcial will take on 30-year old American Alexis Gaytan in an eight-round middleweight non-title bout on the same date, according to MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons. 'Ever since I started boxing, the reason I started I was so inspired by Manny Pacquiao as a kid when I watched him fighting on TV,' Marcial said. 'It was my dream to always fight along and eventually and to be on a card with Manny Pacquiao.' Marcial bagged the bronze medal in the Olympics back in 2021 in Tokyo, but fell short in his bid for another medal last 2024 in Paris. As a professional, Marcial has a 5-0 record, with three knockouts. He last fought professionally in March 2023 in the Philippines where he knocked out Thailand's Thoedsak Sinam in the fourth round. Gaytan, meanwhile, has a 17-10 record with six knockouts. Marcial arrived in the United States on Tuesday, along with Jerwin Ancajas, Mark Magsayo, and Jonas Sultan, to join Pacquiao in training camp. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

NYPD cop fired for shooting at girlfriend's husband in Brooklyn car chase
An NYPD cop accused of firing his gun at his girlfrend's estranged husband during an off-duty Brooklyn car chase has been fired from the force, the Daily News has learned. Officer Kevin Marcial, who nearly lost his job 10 years ago in an unrelated disciplinary matter, argued he should be allowed to remain a cop because in pleading guilty to departmental charges he acknowledged he was wrong and showed remorse, NYPD documents show. But NYPD judge Vanessa Facio-Lince said firing a gun under the circumstances 'evinces a serious lapse in judgment that is incompatible with continued service as a member of the department.' Facio-Lince recommended Marcial be fired. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who has the final say in internal disciplinary matters, agreed with that recommendation, firing Marcial on Feb. 18. Her decision and a summary of the case were recently posted on an NYPD website. The incident dates back to April 21, 2022. Marcial, who joined the NYPD in July 2005, finished his shift at the 101st Precinct in the Rockaways and drove to Brooklyn to deliver groceries to his girlfriend at her job. He then dropped her off near where her car was parked and headed home only to realize that a speeding black car, which he correctly suspected her husband was driving, was following him through the streets of Brownsville, he testified at his trial. After several blocks he fired at the car near Sutter and Williams Aves., he testified. No one was hurt but Marcial fled the scene and did not immediately report the incident. He even drove past a police station but said he didn't stop to report what was happening because he didn't want to 'to put anyone else in danger,' he said. A short time later, Marcial reported what happened, as did the husband though at first, according to police sources, the officers Marcial spoke to didn't believe him — until he provided the license plate for Marcial's BMW. Marical was not criminally charged but was suspended from the NYPD then later put on modified duty, assigned to monitor surveillance cameras at a Housing Bureau command. According to the documents, Marcial had a prior run-in with the husband, with the husband confronting him on the street when the girlfriend accompanied Marcial to get his hair cut. In that case, Marcial reported the incident. He had two prior NYPD disciplinary cases — one involving registering his personal car in New Jersey, the other involving an incident in which he was seen with his eyes closed while guarding a prisoner. He lost 30 days pay and was placed on dismissal probation in 2015, meaning he could have been fired for any other misconduct within the next year. Marcial could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Heritage's Marcial and Aquinas' Hantak are the Broward Girls' Soccer Coaches of the Year
St. Thomas Aquinas and American Heritage have long been the standard in girls' soccer in South Florida. In recent years, Heritage has been on one of the more memorable state championship runs in recent memory. And Aquinas, which still holds the most state titles in state history with 15, is inching closer to adding more to its trophy case. Heritage coach Cindy Marcial directed her squad to its third consecutive state championship and even greater heights as the Patriots went wire-to-wire as the nation's No. 1-ranked team. And at Aquinas, Hantak helped the Raiders reach the state championship game in Class 6A and achieve a top 10 national ranking as well. As such, Marcial and Hantak are the Miami Herald's Broward County Girls' Soccer Coaches of the Year. Marcial earns the honor for Classes 4A-1A after leading the Patriots to a 19-1 record and their 14th state title overall. Marcial has been a part of eight of those championships as head coach and this will be the first mythical national title won by Heritage since 2005. American Heritage's dominance was even more evident in the postseason where it beat all five regional and state opponents by a combined score of 30-0. The Patriots shut out their final 11 opponents. Marcial also recently won the Florida Dairy Farmers Association's State Coach of the Year award. 'We are all about tradition and we want to keep it going,' Marcial said. Aquinas nearly had its own dominant season end with a state championship after outscoring their own four playoff opponents 20-0 on the way to the state final. But the Raiders found themselves in a battle with St. Johns Bartram Trail and finished with a deflating 4-3 loss in overtime. Aquinas, however, returns several starters including Miami Herald 7A-5A Player of the Year Sophie Barnes, which should give it a great chance to make another run. 'It was a great game and Bartram is a great team,' Hantak said after the state final loss. 'We were looking forward to playing them all year and now we will look forward to playing them again next year.'
