EAD recovers 2,000+ tonnes of bottles since launch of Bottle Return Scheme
ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recovered more than 2,000 tonnes of bottles since the launch of the Bottle Return Scheme in 2023. Following the launch of the scheme, the Environment Agency– Abu Dhabi, along with Sparklo, EAD's strategic oversight and cleantech leader, also collected 23 million recyclables in 2024. The scheme, part of the Abu Dhabi Single-Use Plastic policy, empowered residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.The agency has collaborated with several partners from the retail industry, waste operators and cleantech providers, and with Sparklo, deployed more than 100 Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs), known as Sparklomats, across Abu Dhabi, with retail outlets of ADNOC, Lulu and Carrefour, offering convenient return access points for plastic bottles and aluminium cans.The 23 million recyclables collected in 2024 alone, included more than 544,000kg of plastic and 18,000kg of aluminium. The cumulative impact of this initiative has prevented more than 3.5 million kg of CO₂ emissions, aligning with Abu Dhabi's ambitious goal of a 22 per cent carbon emissions reduction by 2027. In a single-day milestone, one Sparklomat processed more than 8,500 items, setting a record for individual unit performance.Sheikha Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Integrated Environmental Planning and Policy Sector at EAD, said: 'We seek to integrate sustainability practices into daily life in the emirate. The EAD-led Bottle Return Scheme, held in collaboration with private sector organisations, including Sparklo, embodies the importance of partnerships, technology, and community engagement in creating a sustainable environmental impact." She added, "This initiative, with its objectives, represents a strategic investment that consolidates the concept of environmental responsibility. By supporting the principles of the circular economy, we seek to strengthen Abu Dhabi's leading position in the global transformation towards building a sustainable future.'For his part, Maxim Kaplevich, Founder and CEO of Sparklo, said: 'The partnership with EAD exemplifies the success of government-private sector collaboration. With EAD's unwavering support, we have expanded the RVM network, contributing directly to Abu Dhabi's sustainability agenda. The agency received the 3G Leadership Award in Sustainability Governance and the 3G ESG Championship Award – with both accolades affirming its commitment to world-class environmental excellence and integrity, transparency and responsible 3G Leadership Award in Sustainability Governance recognises outstanding organisations that have demonstrated leadership in corporate governance, upheld ethical standards, and championed integrity, fairness, and accountability. It also honours a commitment to environmental and social responsibility through sustainable practices, governance codes, and transparency in reporting. The agency's longstanding commitment to these pillars was key to its awards were presented during the 10th annual 3G Awards Ceremony, held in Brunei as part of the 3G Summit, which brought together more than 200 participants from around the world. Engineer Salem Al Breiki, Chairman of the Governance Committee and Division Director of Waste Management, accepted the honours on behalf of EAD and also participated in a high-level panel discussion titled Transforming Governance to Tackle Global Health and Environmental Priorities. He was joined by Ayesha Al Ketbi, Director of the Strategic Planning Office, who also represented the agency during the Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said: 'We are deeply honoured to receive these international recognitions, which affirm our ongoing mission to lead by example in sustainable governance and ESG excellence. These awards reflect the dedication of our teams, the strength of our systems and our belief that good governance is the foundation of lasting environmental impact. EAD was acknowledged for its exemplary ESG framework, which is supported by nine formal committees – most notably, the Governance Committee, which was established in 2017 and reformed in agency's ESG journey includes a mature governance system, a 79.3 per cent governance maturity score, conflict of interest and anti-fraud policies, multiple ISO certifications and is currently progressing to obtain ISO 37000 for organisational governance. EAD announces 95% completion of first phase of plan to achieve Abu Dhabi's Environmental Centennial 2071
29 July 2025 11:11 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), in collaboration with its strategic partners, has announced that 95 per cent of the first phase of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071 Plan was completed by the end of 2024, demonstrating its commitment to a sustainable and forward-looking milestone was achieved in only the second year since the plan's rollout in 2023, further driving the emirate's environmental sustainability agenda with the ambitious goal of making Abu Dhabi a global leader in environmental and climate action by Dhabi Government has achieved 359 milestones and positive outcomes under the plan, with 63 initiatives exceeding their targeted goals. These achievements were made possible through the active participation of several key government entities including: Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi; Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi; Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi; Department of Government Enablement – Abu Dhabi; Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority; Abu Dhabi Investment Office; Abu Dhabi Public Health Center; Abu Dhabi Mobility; and Abu Dhabi Maritime. The government's international collaboration spans more than 24 countries worldwide to help fulfil the plan's Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of the Integrated Environmental Policy and Planning Sector at EAD, said: 'This remarkable achievement, which has exceeded expectations, is the result of collaborative efforts among leading government entities that place sustainability at the heart of their priorities – fully aligned with Abu Dhabi's vision. The first pathway, A vibrant emirate, thriving in nature, achieved an 88 per cent completion rate, encompassing several key accomplishments. These include the implementation of a comprehensive aquaculture development plan, the launch of the UAE's first hydrogeological map – which serves as a national reference for groundwater resource assessment – plus the development of a comprehensive sustainable agricultural development plan and the creation of an integrated air quality modelling framework. Other milestones include the launch of Abu Dhabi's Guide for the Safe Use of Bicycles and E-scooters, the update of infrastructure guidelines for micro-mobility, and the development of a research agenda and observatory plan for indoor air quality in priority second pathway, Green force resilient to climate change, exceeded its set targets, reaching a completion rate of 102 per cent. This pathway saw the implementation of numerous projects and initiatives, including the development of the 2025-2050 Environmental Climate Adaptation Plan in conjunction with 41 entities, the establishment of smart agriculture standards to ensure sustainable food security, and the formulation of a comprehensive energy sector policy framework, consisting of 93 initiatives extending to 2035. It also included the design and implementation of hydrogen and electric bus charging infrastructure, and the launch of electric bus operations – a project that went on to win a global innovation award in sustainability. Additional achievements include the development of a Marine Sector Sustainability Action Plan and the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy the third pathway, Enablers for future environmental leadership, participating entities achieved a 97 per cent completion rate. Highlights include the launch of the Emirate's Dark Sky general policy – an initiative aimed at reducing nighttime light pollution – and the introduction of a community engagement initiative to co-design solutions for air and noise quality. In the area of environmental education and awareness, Abu Dhabi hosted the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), reinforcing international cooperation, and launched the seventh edition of the Sustainable Schools the same framework, a Marine Sustainability Research Centre was established under the emirate's marine sector, and Sukun, the world's largest 3D-printed water taxi, was launched. An intelligent soil quality monitoring system was also developed, integrating artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and spectroscopy for pollutant Agency – Abu Dhabi, in collaboration with its strategic partners, continues to strengthen the emirate's leadership in environmental and climate action. This plan is part of the wider Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy 2023–2027, and aligns with national efforts like the UAE National Climate Change Plan 2017–2050 and the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, introduced at COP28. A Defining Moment for Abu Dhabi Calling it a 'defining moment,' Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, said this plan shows Abu Dhabi is moving from planning to action when it comes to climate resilience. 'We are preparing for climate realities with an unwavering commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage,' she said. Dr. Al Dhaheri added that the plan will boost the resilience of natural resources, protect biodiversity, and support food and water security—all while aligning with the UAE's climate goals and Sustainable Development Goals. 142 Adaptation Actions by 2050 The roadmap identifies 142 climate adaptation actions, including 86 high-priority projects that will be carried out in the next five years. These range from nature-based solutions to technical and institutional interventions. By focusing on vulnerable systems like groundwater, soil, and biodiversity, the plan helps reduce environmental risks, maintain public health, and strengthen food production systems. A Long-Term Vision Backed by Data According to Sheikha Al Mazrouei, Executive Director of Integrated Environment Policy and Planning at EAD, the plan is built to evolve over time. It incorporates the latest data, updated climate projections, and includes regular reviews to stay relevant and effective. 'This is part of a bigger vision to protect our ecosystems, secure natural resources, and ensure the well-being of future generations,' Al Mazrouei said. Collaborative, Inclusive and Future-Focused More than 40 entities, from government bodies to universities and youth groups, helped shape the plan, making it one of the most collaborative climate initiatives in the region. This is one of four sectoral plans under Abu Dhabi's wider climate adaptation strategy, further reinforcing the emirate's leadership in regional environmental policy.
