Demand for obesity drugs soars in India as Lilly, Novo jostle for mkt share
Sales of Lilly's Mounjaro, which launched in late March, doubled from May to June, reaching 87,986 units or ₹26 crore ($3.03 million), Pharmarack said in a virtual session. Between March and May, Lilly sold a total of 81,570 Mounjaro units in India.
Meanwhile, Novo sold 1,788 units of Wegovy in India since its late-June launch, Pharmarack said.
Incidence of obesity and diabetes is rising in India, the world's most populous country, which also ranks among the worst three globally for high obesity rates, according to a study published in the medical journal the Lancet.
The Indian obesity market has grown fivefold since 2021 and is valued at ₹628 crore, according to the research firm.
Affordability and willingness to try new drugs for obesity have propelled the growth of the market, Pharmarack's Vice President (Commercial) Sheetal Sapale said.
Wegovy's active ingredient, semaglutide, dominates the market with a two-thirds share in India while Mounjaro's active ingredient, Tirzepatide, has captured 8% of the market, Pharmarack said.
As of June, the semaglutide market in India was valued at ₹412 crore, and Tirzepatide at ₹50 crore, the research firm said.
Novo has sold oral versions of semaglutide for diabetes in India since 2022.
Semaglutide will lose patent protection in India in 2026, and generic drugmakers are aiming to produce cheaper versions of Wegovy as India becomes a key battleground for drugmakers seeking to grab a share of the global obesity market.
Novo and Lilly's drugs help control blood sugar and slow digestion, making users feel fuller for longer.

A unique campaign led by a young medico to improve the living conditions in a small village situated in Rajasthan's Chambal ravines, which was devoid of basic infrastructure to sustain life, has brought a smart school to the region. The Indian-Norwegian Community, a voluntary group from Oslo, Norway, has rendered help for the campaign. The Rajghat village in Dholpur district is deprived of the benefits of schemes designed for panchayats because of its location in the municipal limits. The 'Save Rajghat Campaign' of Ashwani Parashar, 28, first brought electricity to the village with a population of just 350 and later drew the attention of international donors who have pitched in to support the efforts to build the infrastructure. Village of Boatmen The village is inhabited mostly by boatmen, who work as daily wage labourers. Interestingly, the shooting for Hindi films Bandit Queen and Paan Singh Tomar, based on the Chambal dacoits, was done near Rajghat. An old and single-room government primary school in a dilapidated condition – the only educational institution in Rajghat – has given way to a smart school with two classrooms, an office room and a small verandah, constructed in the shape of train coaches. The installation of a smart board in the school has stopped the student dropouts. Dr. Parashar told The Hindu that the Indian-Norwegian Community carried out crowdfunding to support the 'Save Rajghat Campaign' through a project called Saksham. The school, which was on the verge of closure because of decline in admissions, is now functioning with a newly installed smart board. It has over 30 students enrolled, and new admissions are coming in the academic session which started on July 1. Dr. Parashar said his campaign would now focus on 'dignified life' for villagers, with a motorable road, clean drinking water and a fully functional hospital.

Mounjaro crosses Rs 50 cr in India in 90 days as Wegovy joins fray
Mumbai: Sales of Mounjaro ( tirzepatide ), Eli Lilly 's blockbuster weight-loss and diabetes drug, jumped nearly nine times since its launch in March to ₹26 crore in June, a month that also saw the launch of Wegovy from competitor Novo Nordisk . In the last one month itself, Mounjaro sale doubled from ₹13 crore in May, according to data from PharmaTrac . So far the total sales value of Mounjaro is ₹50 crore in India. In volume terms, the numbers over seven times since March to 88,000 units sold in June. In the last two months, the quantity of Mounjaro sold has grown threefold from 28,000 units in April, the data showed. On the other hand, a week within its launch, Wegovy that is available in self-injectable pen-filled version, recorded a sale of ₹2.53 crore, shows the data. Doctors said the increased awareness as well as social media conversations and publicity about both the molecules is prompting many young adults in their thirties and early forties showing interest.

The recent challenge grants and patent support programmes of ICMR are designed to catalyse this spirit of innovation, ensuring India remains at the forefront of medical breakthroughs," Dr Bahl said, sharing ICMR's vision for Viksit Bharat.
