I'm a married man in my 40s and my mum, who's in her 70s, has had dementia for a couple of years. In this time, she's gone from being a sweet, kind person to someone who's really ­aggressive and verbally abusive.

I'm a married man in my 40s and my mum, who's in her 70s, has had dementia for a couple of years. In this time, she's gone from being a sweet, kind person to someone who's really ­aggressive and verbally abusive.

Sadly, my kids get frightened by her when we visit her in her care home, so I've stopped taking them. My wife is very supportive and has gone over and above to help, but I don't want to burden her too much with how I'm feeling, as she has other things on her plate.

I don't feel I have anyone else to talk to about it, though, as I'm an only child and my father died years ago. None of my friends have any experience of a relative with dementia either.

It feels lonely and incredibly depressing. I feel like a bad person when I don't visit my mum and maybe I am selfish, but sometimes I have to cut myself off from her altogether to cope. I'd be very grateful for any advice you might have.

Firstly, you need to know you're not alone in this. I've been through the same, feeling incredible guilt over dreading going to see my mum.
She had Alzheimer's and had very similar behaviour to your mum so I understand how hard it is to cope with. I used to go to bed at night, praying for God to take her peacefully because it was so awful for her and so tormenting for us.
You mustn't ever feel you're a bad son or you've failed her. Please speak to the Alzheimer's Society (alzheimers.org.uk). We spoke to them a lot when my mum was ill and they helped me see everything I was feeling was OK and normal. I'm lucky in that I come from a big family, so we had each other to talk to and could share visits. So, for you, I think it would be so helpful to connect with other people who are going through it with a relative, or have been through it.
You should still talk to your friends. They may not have personal experience, but they can still listen and be there for you. It's important to look after yourself, find ways to relax and get some respite, and you mustn't feel guilty for that.
Even though she can't communicate it, you know your mum wouldn't want you to feel burdened or guilty.

A Scots mum who refused to wear a sunhat to show off her hair has told of her shock when a scab on her head turned out to be cancerous. ‌ Donna McKellar, 54, credits her hairdresser for "saving her life" after they spent a year urging her to get the 50p-sized scab on her head looked at. ‌ The Glasgow bar manager believed the itchy mark, which she'd had for four years, was harmless and caused by catching a childhood scar with her hairbrush. ‌ She visited her GP and was referred to the hospital. However, she was shocked when a biopsy revealed she had basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, in July 2023. Donna said: "Whenever we were on holiday I was always putting suncream on my legs and on my body. But you don't really think of your scalp which is the thing that's getting directly hit by the sun first. "Not wearing a hat was probably a bit of a vanity. I thought 'I'm not wearing a hat, I've got nice long hair'. I wanted to show it off and not wear a hat. "It's a bit silly. I just don't think I actually gave my scalp any thought." The mum-of-two underwent an operation to remove the cancer and put a skin graft over the area, which has left her with a bald patch. ‌ She added: "I was devastated when I heard the word 'cancer' because I lost my parents and my sister in the space of five years to three different cancers." Now cancer-free, Donna says she regrets not protecting her head when out in the sun. She added: "Of course I had regrets. "Since the diagnosis when I've been abroad I've always got a hat on or a headband. ‌ "I've got to wear a headband to cover the wound when I'm on holiday because it's more susceptible to the sun now." Donna said her hairdresser initially pointed out the scab in 2021. She explained: "My hairdresser did help to save my life by encouraging me to go and get checked. ‌ "I had a scab on my head. I had an old scar from when I was a child, I just thought that I'd caught it with my brush and it had scabbed over. "My fingers were always at it and I used to keep picking at it and it used to bleed quite a lot. "I had that for a number of years and it was my hairdresser who kept saying 'Donna will you please go and get that checked out, I don't like it at all'. ‌ "Eventually I went to my GP who referred me to dermatology, they diagnosed it as basal cell carcinoma. "The first surgery was to remove the cancer from my scalp and they took a piece of skin from my clavicle and did a skin graft onto that. ‌ "The two surgeries I've had since then have been cutting the skin graft back, so that I'm not left with such a big bald patch on my head. "They think I just require another two and then that should be done." Donna is now encouraging other people to wear head coverings or buy a specific suncream to use on their scalps. ‌ Donna said: "Get a hat on or get some suncream - you can get specific ones for your scalp. "Make sure you're covered up. People think they look ridiculous with a hat on, but I'd rather look ridiculous. "You're going to look more ridiculous when you've lost half your hair and half your scalp if it has to get cut out." ‌ Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer, which develops in the top layer of the skin (epidermis). Basal cell carcinomas can occur anywhere on the body but are most common in areas that are exposed to the sun such as the face, head, neck, and ears. They are often first noticed as a scab that bleeds and does not heal completely or a new lump on the skin.

The Department for Work and Pensions warns Attendance Allowance claimants they could risk losing their payments Attendance Allowance recipients could face losing their payments entirely if they fail to notify authorities about changes to their circumstances. Latest Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) figures show that nearly 1.7 million people across the UK were receiving additional financial support through Attendance Allowance by the end of August last year. ‌ However, many claimants may not realise that certain alterations to their situation must be reported to the DWP's Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122. And that is especially so if their health worsens or they need hospital care. ‌ That's because these could affect their entitlement or payment amounts. DWP guidance cautions: "You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances." ‌ The guidance goes on to specify the modifications that claimants must declare, which are listed below, reports the Daily Record. Reporting a change to the DWP You must immediately contact the Attendance Allowance helpline if: you go into hospital or a care home - you'll need to provide the address, the dates you've been there for, and how your stay is paid for your immigration status changes, if you're not a British citizen you plan to leave the country for more than 4 weeks you want to stop receiving your benefit you go into prison you change your name, address or bank details your doctor's details change the level of help you need or your condition changes - you'll need to provide details like if the amount of times you need help each day has changed a medical professional has said you might have 12 months or less to live (you could get Attendance Allowance at a higher rate under 'special rules for end of life') If you're uncertain whether a change impacts your Attendance Allowance benefit, it's worth reaching out to the DWP for clarification - full details can be found on DWP guidance indicates that if your circumstances change the amount you receive from Attendance Allowance may increase or decrease. You can report any of these changes by calling the Attendance Allowance helpline by dialling 0800 731 0122. How much you get from Attendance Allowance Attendance Allowance is strictly paid at two rates on a weekly basis. The lower rate, provided when someone requires frequent assistance or constant supervision during the day or night, is set at £73.60 per week or £294.40 per month. The flight crew allowed her to stay in the bathroom for the entire flight.
