Non-league football fan rents plane to fly 400 miles to see beloved team play in Cornwall

Daily Mirror3 days ago
York City supporter David Bower is adamant he wouldn't miss his side's flying start to the new season and will take to the skies to cut his journey by six-and-a-half hours
A devoted non-league football fan is renting a plane to fly to his beloved club's first away fixture of the season - 400 miles away in Cornwall! Pilot David Bower, a York City supporter, is flying down to watch his side play Truro City in the National League on Saturday.

The flight will take him around two and half hours rather than the eight or nine hours by bus. David, 62, saw his first York game in 1973, and he wasn't going to miss this match despite the huge distance involved. He could have stayed and watched the game at home as it's being screened live on DAZN.

He said: 'I was hoping that it would be Truro for our first away game- even before the fixtures came out. And when they did I couldn't believe it. It's the perfect fixture for me. It's August - usually really good weather and perfect to fly down to Cornwall.

'I'm flying down with my brother Richard and we are both very excited. I've been a York fan since 1973. My first game was against Blackburn Rovers. I never thought when I was a kid I would be flying a plane to an away match in Cornwall.'
David, who has been a private pilot since 1996, has paid a "substantial sum" to hire the four seater Piper Warrior plane for two days. "It is expensive but it's worth it,' he said.
'How often do you get chance to fly to Cornwall to watch your club play?' He will leave from Sherburn in Elmet a small airfield between Leeds and York.
David said: "We will leave around 9am on the Saturday morning. It should take us around two and a half hours possibly two and three quarter hours.
'There are two small airfields quite close to Truro's ground but I've decided to land at Newquay which is a bit further away but their runway is a lot longer.

'We have't quite worked out how to get from Newquay to Truro yet but we will definitely get there! The last part of our journey to the match will be by bus or taxi. Then we will return north on the Sunday. It should be a great weekend - let's hope we win!'
York have been allocated 600 tickets for the fixture and expect to sell most of them. The official supporters buses are leaving the Memorial Gardens in York City Centre at 6am - a staggering 11 and a half hours before kick off. And seats aren't cheap - they are £80 for adults and £75 for Under 16s.
York started the Enterprise National League season with a 2-2 home draw against Sutton United. It's Truro's first ever season at this level and they started with a 2-0 defeat at Wealdstone.

Financially stricken former EFL side are SAVED from going bust - as takeover is approved by governing body

The National League has approved the takeover of turmoiled Morecambe, with the Shrimps cleared to start their season next weekend should the sale go through. A group known as Panjab Warriors struck a deal to save the beleaguered Lancashire club, which was relegated from League Two last season. Amid grave concerns over their existence, Morecambe had their first three matches postponed thanks to an inability to meet financial obligations. However, National League officials say they have now given the green light to the takeover and that their suspension of the club will be lifted upon receipt of the sale and purchase agreement. A transfer embargo will remain in place until HMRC and other creditors including staff and players have been paid. The statement added: 'It is the intention for Morecambe's first National League game to be on Saturday 23rd August at home v Altrincham FC. 'The National League would like to welcome the new owners and to thank everybody involved in helping to secure the future of the Club and reaching this point.' An ongoing saga dominated the summer included Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy writing to Morecambe's controversial owner Jason Whittingham, to urge him to sell. In July it appeared there had been a breakthrough for the 105-year-old club, when Whittingham said he agreed terms with Panjab Warriors, although the takeover failed to materialise. Both sides subsequently agreed to a mediation session last week. Morecambe had ceased operations in late July, following their suspension by the National League.

Back in first place in NL West, Dodgers aim to sweep rival Padres

August 17 - The Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with plenty of injuries this season, along with stretches on the schedule with play below expectations, and yet something about the San Diego Padres brings out the best in the World Series champions. The Dodgers will try for a three-game sweep of their Southern California rivals when they host the Padres on Sunday. After they held on for a 3-2 victory on Friday, the Dodgers turned six walks issued by Dylan Cease over the first two innings into a 6-0 victory over the Padres on Saturday, while regaining sole possession of first place in the National League West. "Obviously wins are great. We're going to sleep well tonight, be ready to (sweep) tomorrow," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I'm just happy that we're playing better baseball. It just seems like we're playing clean baseball. We're minimizing the walks, taking walks, not making outs on the bases, and converting outs when we need to." In Sunday's series finale, Los Angeles is set to send right-hander Tyler Glasnow to the mound. Glasnow (1-1, 3.08 ERA) has not won any of his past 10 starts and yet has a 2.34 ERA over his past six outings and has averaged 7.5 strikeouts over his last four. In six career appearances (three starts) against the Padres, he is 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA. The Dodgers' offense scored five times in the first two innings Saturday and did it on just one hit. At the same time, the Dodgers recorded three of their first four outs on defense when catcher Will Smith threw out Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts trying to steal second base. The Dodgers are now 7-2 against the Padres this season and have a chance at the sweep after entering the series with a 10-14 record since the All-Star break. The Padres will counter with right-hander Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.61), a former Dodger who has made just seven season starts because of right elbow inflammation. Darvish is 5-5 over 15 career starts against Los Angeles, with a 2.27 ERA. Darvish had a 1.72 ERA against the Dodgers in three regular-season starts last season then went 1-1 in a pair of playoff appearances, while allowing three runs over 13 2/3 total innings. After the Padres entered the series with manager Mike Shildt praising his team's relentless offense, the Padres have scored two total runs in two games after they averaged 6.2 runs in five consecutive victories before the series. On Saturday, San Diego had six hits to five for Los Angeles and lost by six runs. "Listen, that was an odd game," Shildt said, when asked about three base stealers thrown out in the first two innings. "We had a plan, and they made some plays. And when you're down, it hurts a little bit more. But you know, it's an odd game when you outhit a team and lose 6-0." The Padres did not use left-handed hitters Gavin Sheets or Ryan O'Hearn in the starting lineup the past two games against left-handed starting pitchers, with both possibilities to play Sunday against Glasnow. --Field Level Media
