Football fans' 800-mile round trip in rented plane to watch non-league game in Cornwall

"Lots of people had heard we had flown down for the game. City fans, Truro fans and even the refueller and the handling man at the airport knew about us. It couldn't have been a better day" Two football fans who flew 400 miles to watch their team play a non league match in Cornwall were rewarded after their beloved team scored two late goals to win. ‌ David and Richard Bower said they had an 'absolutely fantastic' day after renting a plane to fly down from Yorkshire to Cornwall. ‌ After the Mirror's story last week about their amazing flight, they were recognised by both home and away fans and even by airport staff! York City beat Truro 2-0. David said: 'We had an absolutely fantastic day - and a York City win with two late goals made the whole trip worthwhile. ‌ 'Everyone was great - really friendly welcome from everyone in Cornwall and Truro is a lovely city. 'Lots of people had heard we had flown down for the game. City fans, Truro fans and even the refueller and the handling man at the airport knew about us. It couldn't have been a better day everyone was so very welcoming and a really hospitable local bunch. 'It was certainly one of our most memorable games to watch York.' At one stage the brothers feared they might be late for the game because of low cloud cover in the Yorkshire area but they were able to take off on time to make the 5.30pm kick off on Saturday. ‌ David, 62, who has been a private pilot since 1996, paid a 'substantial sum' to hire the four seater Piper Warrior plane for two days. 'It was expensive but it was worth it,' he said. How often do you get chance to fly to Cornwall to watch your club play?' They left and returned from Sherburn in Elmet a small airfield between Leeds and York. David said: 'I've been a York fan since 1973. My first game was against Blackburn Rovers. I never thought when I was a kid I would be flying a plane to an away match in Cornwall.'

York football fan to fly plane to Cornwall for match

A football fan from Yorkshire is planning a 600-mile (about 970km) round trip to Cornwall to watch his home team's opening league City fan David Bower is aiming to pilot a four-seater Piper Warrior to Newquay Airport on Saturday morning, before making the onward journey to newly-promoted Truro match will be Truro City's first ever in the National League, the fifth tier of English Bower said he was unsure how he and his brother - who is flying with him - would make their way from the airport to the ground, but would sort it out on the day. He said: "I am a runner, it's about 15 miles so it would probably take about two hours, but my brother wouldn't want to do that - we'll probably take a taxi or get the bus."Mr Bower has had a pilot's licence for about 30 years and has flown to three previous York City games, though the furthest he had previously flown was Exeter. Mr Bower said he "couldn't believe it" when he saw York's opening fixture, as Truro's manager John Askey previously managed York, adding "he was well liked".Mr Bower predicted York should beat Truro as they were a "fluid attacking side" that played a "really nice style of football".However he said he was "really pleased" Truro, whose players include ex-York City striker Sam Sanders, were promoted last season and felt they should "do alright"."Truro are the unknown entity, aren't they, so I hope they do well - apart from Saturday."

Non-league football fan rents plane to fly 400 miles to see beloved team play in Cornwall

York City supporter David Bower is adamant he wouldn't miss his side's flying start to the new season and will take to the skies to cut his journey by six-and-a-half hours A devoted non-league football fan is renting a plane to fly to his beloved club's first away fixture of the season - 400 miles away in Cornwall! Pilot David Bower, a York City supporter, is flying down to watch his side play Truro City in the National League on Saturday. ‌ The flight will take him around two and half hours rather than the eight or nine hours by bus. David, 62, saw his first York game in 1973, and he wasn't going to miss this match despite the huge distance involved. He could have stayed and watched the game at home as it's being screened live on DAZN. ‌ He said: 'I was hoping that it would be Truro for our first away game- even before the fixtures came out. And when they did I couldn't believe it. It's the perfect fixture for me. It's August - usually really good weather and perfect to fly down to Cornwall. ‌ 'I'm flying down with my brother Richard and we are both very excited. I've been a York fan since 1973. My first game was against Blackburn Rovers. I never thought when I was a kid I would be flying a plane to an away match in Cornwall.' David, who has been a private pilot since 1996, has paid a "substantial sum" to hire the four seater Piper Warrior plane for two days. "It is expensive but it's worth it,' he said. 'How often do you get chance to fly to Cornwall to watch your club play?' He will leave from Sherburn in Elmet a small airfield between Leeds and York. David said: "We will leave around 9am on the Saturday morning. It should take us around two and a half hours possibly two and three quarter hours. 'There are two small airfields quite close to Truro's ground but I've decided to land at Newquay which is a bit further away but their runway is a lot longer. ‌ 'We have't quite worked out how to get from Newquay to Truro yet but we will definitely get there! The last part of our journey to the match will be by bus or taxi. Then we will return north on the Sunday. It should be a great weekend - let's hope we win!' York have been allocated 600 tickets for the fixture and expect to sell most of them. The official supporters buses are leaving the Memorial Gardens in York City Centre at 6am - a staggering 11 and a half hours before kick off. And seats aren't cheap - they are £80 for adults and £75 for Under 16s. York started the Enterprise National League season with a 2-2 home draw against Sutton United. It's Truro's first ever season at this level and they started with a 2-0 defeat at Wealdstone.
