Gyokeres to Arsenal takes twist as response to private meeting comes to light

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon remain several million apart over the upfront fee for Viktor Gyokeres after 48 hours of talks in Portugal with fresh reports saying next few hours may decide fate
Viktor Gyokeres' move to Arsenal is on the brink of collapsing according to reports in Portugal because the Gunners and Sporting Lisbon are struggling to agree a fee for the prolific striker.
An Arsenal delegation include transfer chief Andrea Berta have spent the past 48 hours negotiating with their Sporting counterparts after personal terms before the Premier League giants and Gyokeres' representatives were already agreed.

But Record report that a €5m (£4.3m) gap remains between the clubs. Arsenal are offering a package of €65m (£56m) plus future payments of €5m and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons. However Sporting are demanding €70m (£60m) up front and are unwilling to budge.

The outlet adds that Arsenal's negotiators are now heading back to England and the next few hours may be decisive - bringing either a breakthrough or seeing the entire deal collapse.
Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of Gabriel Heinze as their new first team coach with the former Manchester United full back set to boost Mikel Arteta 's brains trust.
The ex-Argentina international has already linked up with the Gunners as they begin their pre-season preparations ahead of a renewed attempt to the end their two-decade wait for the Premier League title.

'We are delighted to announce the appointment of Gabriel Heinze to our coaching staff as men's first team coach,' Arsenal said in a statement.
'Heinze, a former Argentina international, brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the club. We are excited with the introduction of Gabriel to our men's first-team coaching staff, and welcome him and his family to Arsenal.'

Arsenal are back in training and have five friendlies pencilled in, beginning with fixtures with AC Milan and Newcastle in Singapore before facing Spurs in Hong Kong later this month. The Gunners then host Villarreal and Athletic Club in the Emirates Cup on August 5 and 9.
Arteta has already welcomed Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi into his playing squad while they remain in advanced talks with Sporting Lisbon for the centre forward Viktor Gyokeres. Brentford captain Christian Norgaard is also set to join, while there remains talk of an audacious swoop for Real Madrid star Rodrygo.

Rangers-linked winger directly answers transfer question

He seems certain to leave Como who have just splashed out £17 million on another winger - ex-Celtic star Nicolas Kuhn. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Rangers, Norwich City and Trabzonspor over the summer and was asked directly about those clubs' interest in him in an interview in Switzerland. Read more: Ballet said: "All I can say is that discussions are ongoing. "However, I'm not fully informed about everything. I'm still on holiday right now. "It can go either way. I still have two years left on my contract with Como. Playing time is the most important thing for me. Let's see what the next few days and weeks bring. "FC Zurich wanted to keep me after my loan spell, but it was difficult for them to afford the transfer fee. "I had an extremely good time in Zurich. I could have imagined another season here, as I've developed a close relationship with many people at the club. "It's not always easy to deal with the speculation about a transfer to other clubs, even if you have to ignore it as a professional. "There are people with families here who can probably handle it more easily. It's probably more difficult for younger players."

Alejandro Garnacho rejects Man Utd transfer exit despite Cristiano Ronaldo offer

Alejandro Garnacho looks likely for the Manchester United exit door this summer after falling out with manager Ruben Amorim Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho has rejected the chance to join former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi side Al-Nassr, according to reports. Garnacho looks certain to leave Old Trafford this summer after his row with manager Ruben Amorim, who irked the player by dropping him for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. ‌ The Argentine also risked the wrath of the club as he slammed their 2024-25 season as "s***" after the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League, their worst season in top flight history. ‌ Garnacho is one of five players who were allowed extra time before returning to pre-season training in order to find new clubs, but he has since come back into the fold at Carrington among the first team squad. The 21-year-old is still intent on a move but has snubbed the opportunity to move to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr, as reported by the Telegraph, because he wants to prioritise a European club. Napoli and Chelsea are among the teams who have been linked with a move for Garnacho in the past, with ESPN also claiming he has "firm interest" from teams in Germany. ‌ Joining Al-Nassr would have reunited Garnacho with Ronaldo, a player he idolised while the two were briefly at United together. Garnacho has previously been seen copying Ronaldo's trademark 'siiiuu' celebration on the pitch and the pair shared a close relationship during the Portuguese legend's two years back at United between 2021-22 and 2022-23. ‌ But it appears Garnacho is not ready to give up the chance of playing top level football in Europe, following the lead of United captain Bruno Fernandes - who snubbed interest from Al-Hilal because he wanted to continue with the elite for as long as possible. The Telegraph report goes on to say that United are still happy for Garnacho to pursue a move away from the club but are said to have placed a £60million price tag on him - which may put off some suitors. However, the Daily Express have claimed that some United figures have conceded they may have to settle for a bid closer to £45m in order to clear him off their books. Garnacho initially started his career in the Atletico Madrid academy before joining United's youth system in 2020, making his first senior appearance the following year. He has made a total of 144 appearances for United, scoring 26 times.

Chelsea Champions League hero's son signs for Arsenal and gets first-team number

Ex-Chelsea and Southampton star Ryan Bertrand has seen his son, Marcell Washington, sign a professional deal Arsenal having come through the ranks with the Blues Arsenal have signed Marcell Washington, the son of former Chelsea and Southampton star Ryan Bertrand, from the Blues as he pens his first professional deal having come through the ranks in west London. The 17-year-old left-back joined Arsenal from their London rivals as a trialist last season and has impressed enough to earn a deal with the Gunners. It also means he's the latest young talent to leave the Chelsea set-up, many of whom have gone on to excel elsewhere. ‌ The pedigree in Washington's family will mean there are high hopes for him. His father too came through the ranks at Chelsea and made huge headlines when he was included to play in the Champions League final win in 2012 as a youngster. ‌ He eventually left Stamford Bridge and enjoyed his best days whilst at Southampton, where he was hugely influential. His exploits also earned him England recognition and Washington, who will wear No 55 at Arsenal next term, admits its been incredible to have him advise on his development. Washington said: "I think it's been such an honour to have him take me through clips and walk me through games that I've played. He's really passionate about making me a better player and probably a better version of him. We might have a bit of an argument about it but you get it out of him." Washington underlined his ambitions with Arsenal as he added: "I think it's a really big club, obviously. The club are always striving to win trophies. I'm just looking to be an addition to that and see what I can offer the club.' ‌ If the teenager wants to be contributing on the pitch he'll need to compete with the likes of Jurrien Timber and Myles Lewis-Skelly for a place in the first-team, but is glad he'll have such quality around him, adamant they can help improve him during the infant years of his professional career. He added: "They're all great players that play in and around my position, which I think is a really good thing and training with them and getting the opportunities is really good as well. Because you obviously want to learn from players with such experience and such high skill with all of the games.' Mikel Arteta has continued to give youth a chance with Lewis-Skelly enjoying a breakout season. Ethan Nwaneri has also become a mainstay with the first-team, all of which will give Washington hope he can get an opportunity.
