Annual adopt-a-doll auction live at East Rand Children's Haven
The campaign raises essential funds to support the home's daily operations and care for the 20 children who live there.
Funding from the Department of Social Development falls far short of covering the home's needs. While smaller fundraisers are held throughout the year, the annual doll auction is one of the most significant contributors to keeping the home running.
This year's campaign features 20 dolls, each representing a child in the home's care. One doll is auctioned off every few days on the home's Facebook page (East Rand Children's Haven) between Mandela Day and Women's Day on August 9.
Each winning bidder receives a certificate of 'adoption' as a token of appreciation. Supporters are encouraged to display the certificate proudly in their home or workplace.
In a special call to action, the home is encouraging businesses, schools and families to pool their resources and place a group bid on one of the dolls. Proceeds go directly toward the care of the children and household needs.

Johannesburg Water is aware of pipe leak on Jan Smuts
Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed to the Gazette, on July 30, that repairs and backfilling were completed on the Jan Smuts Avenue excavation, however there was still a persistent leak coming from it. The Gazette, on July 25, reported that a leak on Jan Smuts Avenue was closer to the surface, and had worsened. We also reported that blue pipes were left on the side of the excavation. Also read: Reinstatement coming for corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Corlett Drive JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala explained: 'It does seem that there is water seeping through. A team will be assigned to go to the site and excavate, so that they can conduct investigations into where the water is coming from, as there is also a storm water pipeline at that same site.' Shabalala added that it could either be another water pipe leak, or it could be a storm water pipe that was leaking. The cause would be determined once the team has excavated and assessed the leak. More information will be provided as we receive it. Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration!

Traffic is still a huge headache on Christiaan de Wet Street
Traffic is still a huge headache on Christiaan de Wet Street If you don't have to travel on Christiaan de Wet Street near Laerskool Kragbron and HTS Witbank, don't. A section of the road has been closed to facilitate the construction of the Klarinet and Siyanqoba Bulk Water Supply Phase 2 Project. This project is long overdue due to several hiccups the contractor did not foresee when the project started. Blasting had to be done in the suburb to break some of the hard rock that posed a huge challenge for the crew. However, progress is made, and the team is on site, hard at work to finish.
