Palm oil and rubber model can drive Malaysia's global food ambitions
Its chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Effendi Norwawi, said the country should start viewing agriculture and food security as a strategic growth sector rather than a recurring policy issue.
"Agriculture and food security have always been on the agenda, even from the 1970s, but it is time for the government to examine it more closely, reprioritise the sector, and elevate it to a top national priority," he said after the MIER Brown Bag Talk Series -- "A Journey Through the Looking Glass: Towards Future-Proofing Malaysia's Food Security" -- here today.
Mohd Effendi, a former minister of agriculture and food security, said Malaysia's food import bill, supply vulnerabilities, and global disruptions such as war, pandemics, and climate change highlight the urgent need for a new approach.
"We have achieved success in palm oil and rubber, and we can apply this model to food production, particularly by utilising modern technology and the extensive knowledge we possess," he said, citing institutions like the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and the country's network of agriculture professionals.
Mohd Effendi highlighted that beyond agriculture, other emerging areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability should be central to the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
"AI is an area we must move forward with. Malaysia is still at the starting line, so we have an opportunity to jump-start our progress.
"We can move quickly into areas like AI and sustainability, where we already have national experts and can bring in international ones to help shape strong policies and strategies," he said.
The talk featured presentations by MIER senior fellows Dr Larry Chee-Yoong Wong and Khairuddin Md Tahir, who advocated for a systemic shift in how Malaysia addresses food security.
The event is part of MIER's ongoing Brown Bag Talk Series aimed at fostering policy dialogue on key national issues.

161 MPs debate 13MP in 4th week of Dewan Rakyat sitting
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 161 MPs participated in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate, which concluded on the fourth week of the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday. The session was held over eight days from Aug 4, following the tabling of the national development roadmap for the next five years (2026-2030), themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan' (Redesigning Development) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 31. Key issues raised during this week's debate included strengthening public transportation facilities, improving the education sector, and focusing on the welfare of healthcare workers. Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi) proposed that the government offer tax relief incentives to public transport users. At the same time, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) suggested consolidating government preschools, currently managed by three different ministries, under the Ministry of Education. Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen (PH-Bandar Kuching) and Dr Halimah Ali (PN-Kapar), respectively, proposed the abolishment of the contract system for doctors to address manpower shortages and systemic changes in transfer procedures, working hours, and remuneration. Sabah and Sarawak MPs, including Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (Semporna), and Mohamad Shafizan Kepli (GPS-Batang Lupar), participated in the debate by raising issues related to development in their respective states. According to the Parliament calendar, the ministerial reply session on the 13MP will begin on Monday and will last for four days. At the Dewan Rakyat's Special Chambers, Azalina emphasised that 'quick win' reforms that can be implemented in the short term to deliver immediate benefits to the public could include abolishing caning as a punishment, giving judges greater discretion in sentencing, and improving the remand process. 2025 Robocup Malaysia open showcases AI expertise
ARAU: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is hosting the 2025 RoboCup Malaysia Open, bringing together 250 participants from Malaysia, China, Iran and Thailand and showcasing robotics expertise related to artificial intelligence (AI). UniMAP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli said the competition featured various categories, including rescue robots, domestic robots, football robots and line following robots, with each team having to programme the robots according to the stipulated challenges. 'This year's RoboCup highlights the AI application, in line with the aims of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under the 13th Malaysia Plan, which stresses the importance of the technology. 'AI allows the development of robots to assist operations such as rescue during disasters, managing homes and carrying out daily tasks,' he told reporters after the launch of the competition at UniMAP here today. The Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is also the UniMAP Chancellor, officiated the opening of the three-day competition, which began today. Also present was the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, who is also the UniMAP Pro-Chancellor.
