Alexander Isak knows what Viktor Gyokeres thinks about him amid Liverpool transfer saga

Daily Mirror6 days ago
As Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak continue to be linked with moves away, the Arsenal target's thoughts on the Newcastle United ace have bobbed to the surface
Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak have the world and Europe's top clubs at their feet. However, Gyokeres insists his Swedish international team-mate has not changed, despite his sharp rise up the ranks in football, according to sources close to both players.
The pair have been high up the transfer bulletins, having been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United, and Liverpool respectively. They are spearheading a new generation of Swedish superstars who may have previously been in the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for many years.
Yet, despite their stratospheric rises in football, neither player has developed an ego quite like the ex-United and Barcelona star. This was explained by Johnny Gustafsson, who was Isak's coach when he was an U16 and U17 player for Swedish side AIK Stockholm.
In an interview with the Guardian in March, Gustafsson claimed Isak's Sweden team-mates, which will include Gyokeres, believe he is the same humble and hungry player he always has been, despite his surge last season. Gustafsson said: "They also say he's exactly the same person. His success has not changed him at all.'
When asked about Isak's development as a person, Peter Wennberg, another coach and official at AIK, also added: "He never forgets. He's humble.
"At the end of his under-17 year he had to fill in an evaluation and made a point of thanking the kit managers. He always understood that people worked around him to support him.'
Isak is still widely revered at his childhood club, who are grateful that he has kept in touch with many who guided him during his journey. They also admit that Isak's initial years as a footballer did not scream that he was going to be a player that will be linked with Liverpool.
Gustafsson added: "A lot of people, maybe agents and individual coaches, will say: 'We knew he was going to be a top player, I saw him when he was 10 or 12.' But that's not true. We who were there, actually working at this club, can see.'
Isak's extra training sessions and inquisitive nature helped him become one of Europe's finest strikers. He had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, who were reportedly willing to negotiate a British transfer record breaking sum of £120million to bring him to Anfield.
However, the Reds have since changed their focus to Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, as the Magpies informed them that Isak would not be for sale. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe also left Isak out of a pre-season friendly loss to Celtic, citing the distracting presence of the frequent transfer speculation.
Meanwhile, Gyokeres is still waiting to see if he will be able to join Arsenal. The Sporting Lisbon striker has made it abundantly clear that he wants a move to the Emirates Stadium, even going on strike to try and force through a move.
The Gunners reached a deal in principle for Gyokeres, but are struggling to complete a full agreement.

Liverpool agree Luis Diaz transfer with £65.5m exit imminent

Luis Diaz is set to leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich, with a €75 million (£65.5m) deal agreed for the Colombian. The Reds are on a pre-season tour in Japan and Diaz has been given permission to leave the trip in order to complete his move to the German giants. Despite an impressive season with Liverpool last time round, which finished with a Premier League title, Diaz has been linked with an exit all summer. Barcelona were interested in the winger, but Liverpool rejected an approach earlier in the transfer window. However, their position has now changed and have decided to cash in on the 28-year-old in a busy summer in the transfer market for the champions. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Diaz is under contract with Liverpool until 2027 and The Times report that there have been two attempts to agree a new deal but an agreement could not be reached. There was reportedly too big a gap in what the club were willing to offer and the wage demands of the player. Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra reports that Bayern are in negotiations with Diaz and will likely offer him a four or five year deal in Bavaria. The Colombia international will leave Anfield having made 148 appearances for the club in all competitions and scoring 41 goals. He has added a Premier League, FA Cup and two Carabao Cups to his CV, while he won a Champions League runner-up medal with the Reds. Diaz will join Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhín Kelleher and Nat Phillips in leaving Liverpool this summer, while his departure could help facilitate another big signing. The Premier League champions have already spent over £260m on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez and may well not be finished. There could still be a blockbuster move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, who has made it clear to the Magpies that he wants to explore a move elsewhere. The Swedish superstar will likely cost around £150m, so the Reds would probably have to secure some more sales to get a deal done for the 25-year-old. Darwin Nunez is available for transfer, with interest from Italy and Saudi Arabia, but a deal does not appear close at this stage. More Trending The signs suggest Isak will be leaving Newcastle, though, as he is not with the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia. Eddie Howe's team were beaten by Arsenal in a friendly in Singapore on Sunday and was asked if there was the possibility that Isak could join them before the tour is over, but he said: 'No chance.' Isak has also emerged as a target for the Saudi Pro League but he is believed to want to remain in the Premier League, with Liverpool the clear favourites to sign him this summer. Luis Diaz set for 75m euro move to Bayern Munich as Liverpool accept latest bid

Liverpool have agreed a 75 million euro deal with Bayern Munich for Reds forward Luis Diaz, the PA news agency understands. The agreement comes after the Bundesliga champions were understood to have reopened dialogue regarding a move after having an initial offer of 67.5 million euros (£59m) dismissed last week. Liverpool are currently on their pre-season tour in Asia and Diaz was still with the team when they arrived in Tokyo on Sunday, but now has permission to leave. The 28-year-old has two years left on his original contract and it is understood the Reds accepted the bid for what they consider to be his market value. Diaz joined Liverpool in January 2022 and made 50 appearances in all competitions last season – scoring 17 goals – as he helped the team clinch the Premier League title. His time on Merseyside also saw him lift the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Diaz was left out of Liverpool's 4-2 friendly defeat by AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday as speculation surrounding his future continued to mount. Speaking post-match, head coach Arne Slot said: 'In Lucho's (Diaz's) situation, there's a lot of rumours around him lately and I cannot go into that. 'He's training really well with us but we have decided for now not to play him yet. 'I'm used to talking to most of my players on a regular basis. I cannot comment much more about that.' Liverpool have been busy in the transfer window so far and have bolstered their attacking options with Florian Wirtz – who made his first start as a false nine on Saturday – and Hugo Ekitike joining the club. There have also been further arrivals on Merseyside, with Jeremie Frimpong, left-back Milos Kerkez and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili all signing and the trio played in the second half of Saturday's friendly.

One fan said: 'Max Dowman. The Future Of England Football. You don't come across this very often. Generational.' A further added: 'Max Dowman could be one of Arsenal's best ever academy products. At fifteen, there aren't many who have shown this type of flair and determination in men's football against premier league future is bright.' 'I don't think people realize how good Max Dowman is and what he could become. At 15, he looked like the best player on the pitch,' another fan responded. 'This is a Lamine Yamal level of talent. Arteta and Arsenal will not be able to keep him out of the side for much longer. He's decisive.' 'Lionel Messi, I hope you enjoyed your time as the greatest football of all time because Max Dowman is here now,' another Arsenal supporter said, with another writing: 'Messi wasn't this good at 15. Max Dowman might just be his heir.' Elsewhere, Arsenal fan Piers Morgan was also full of praise for Dowman. He wrote: 'This kid is the real deal.. 15 years old and running rings round Newcastle's first team? Nuts.. and so exciting.' ‌ Dowman, 15, will hope that his positive outing against Newcastle is enough to force him into Mikel Arteta 's thinking for the new season. The youngster has yet to make his first-team competitive debut for the club but is already a regular for the Arsenal under 18s despite his age. Dowman, who is an England under-17 international, made his Premier League 2 debut last term. Speaking about Dowman's latest appearance, boss Mikel Arteta said: 'Yeah, it is special. ‌ 'Obviously what he's done today against this team in the time that he had on the pitch is something certainly not common to witness for a 15-year-old. We are extremely happy to have him. 'I think again the environment that he's around in, his family, the people at the club and around the academy as well, super helpful because they put him into this position so early in his journey, having a real chance and a real presence when he plays for the first time.'
