Canelo Alvarez Vs. William Scull Undercard

Forbes29-04-2025

On Saturday, May 3, Canelo Alvarez puts his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull in the main event of a boxing event at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Below, we look at the undercard for the Alvarez vs. Scull fight card.
Canelo Alvarez vs William Scull: Super middleweight, for the undisputed title
Bruno Surace vs Jaime Munguia: Super middleweight
Martin Bakole vs Efe Ajagba: Heavyweight
Badou Jack vs Ryan Rozicki: Cruiserweight, for the WBC title
Marco Verde vs Michel Polina: Middleweight
Brayan Leon vs Aaron Guerrero: Middleweight
Bruno Surace (26-0-2 with five knockouts) is a 26-year-old out of France. He entered the conversation in December of last year when he scored an upset knockout win over Jaime Munguia in the sixth round of their first matchup. Munguia was a massive betting favorite in that fight at -3500, while Surace was the +900 underdog. Surace is an underdog in the rematch as well, but he is +500 this time to Munguia's -950.
Surace's win over Munguia earned ESPN's boxing Upset of the Year honors.
Jaime Munguia (44-2 with 35 knockouts) was the No. 3 ranked boxer at 168 pounds according to ESPN when he stepped into the ring to face Surace in his home country of Mexico. Munguia's only previous loss came in May 2024 when he dropped a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez. The plan was Munguia to get a win over Surace and then have him face Christian Mbilli. Surace upset that plan. Today, ESPN has the 28-year-old ranked at No. 10, one spot below Surace.

The rumor mill was working overtime last week when it came to Alvarez. Initial reports from The Ring (since deleted) said an 'agreement is in place' for Alvarez to put his super middleweight title on the line against Terence Crawford. Not long after that, ESPN reported that Alvarez was 'in the process of finalizing a deal' to face Jake Paul on May 3, and that, 'Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, is suspending efforts to finalize contracts for an Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford…'
It didn't take long for talk of the Paul fight to fall by the wayside as The Ring reported that Alvarez had inked a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. The final piece of Alvarez news came down on February 8 when Alalshikh announced WBO, WBA, and WBC super middleweight champion Alvarez would face undefeated IBF champion Scull in May for the undisputed super middleweight title.
Alvarez had held the undisputed super middleweight crown, but the IBF stripped Alvarez of its belt in July 2024 after Alvarez failed to make a mandatory title defense against Scull. Scull (23-0 with nine knockouts) won the vacant title in October with a decision win over Vladimir Shishkin.
Alvarez (62-2-2 with 39 knockouts) is coming off a September decision win over Edgar Berlanga in defense of his WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.
We will have more on the Alvarez vs. Scull fight card, including updated odds, picks, predictions and more as fight night approaches.

Twin sister of Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell dead at 18, police say

Kierston Russell, the twin sister of University of Alabama freshman quarterback Keelon Russell, has died just days after the siblings graduated from high school, police confirmed in a statement on Thursday. She was 18. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed Kierston's passing in a statement, adding that the investigation into her death is "ongoing." "There has been considerable media attention concerning a death investigation that occurred (in Tuscaloosa) on June 4, 2025," Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit said in a statement obtained by Tuscaloosa News. "After speaking with the family, and in an attempt to quell media inquiries, they have given permission to confirm the death of Kierston Russell... The investigation is ongoing pursuant to the procedures mentioned above, and at this time appears to be non-criminal in nature. Therefore, at this time no other information will be released." Kierston played basketball at Duncanville High School in Texas. According to ESPN, she was due to join her brother at Alabama in August. The twins graduated last month. Keelon, a five-star recruit who enrolled early and attended Alabama's spring training, shared photos of the two together and shared a prayer to his Instagram Stories on Thursday. "Dear god, Thank You that every good and pleasant gift is from above. You are the source of every blessing in my life-my health, my work, my relationships, and the strength to face each day. Even my ability to work and create comes from You. I acknowledge that all I have is a gift from Your generous hand," he post read. "As James 1:17 says, 'Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.' You are faithful, and I am grateful." Kierston's basketball team also shared a statement on X following the news of her death. "With shattered hearts, we mourn the loss of our sister & teammate, Kierston Russell. A fierce competitor with a heart of gold – her light, love & legacy will live on. We love you, KRuss. Always." Cap expert shares the cost of a potential Warriors trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo

Cap expert shares the cost of a potential Warriors trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo After the Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated from the opening round of the playoffs, for the third consecutive season, Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected to consider his future with the franchise. The Golden State Warriors are just one of the teams expected to have interest in the former MVP, should he request a trade in the coming months. However, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks, who was speaking on a June 3 episode of ESPN's "Get Up," a trade for Giannis will cost Golden State a core member of their rotation. Marks noted how the deal would likely include either Draymond Green or Jimmy Butler, as both stars have a high enough salary to help make the money work. Golden State would also need to include young talents and draft picks. "How it would happen is you're likely trading Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green in a trade," Marks said. "That's how it happens. There's not a scenario where you can fit Giannis and also keep the other three players there." Giannis is a top-five player in the NBA. Therefore, the Warriors would likely accept a high asking price in order to create a new duo of Giannis and Stephen Curry. After all, Golden State's primary goal is to give Curry a shot at another championship before he retires. Adding Giannis would help achieve that. Still, it's worth noting that there's currently no reporting that Giannis wants to leave Milwaukee. And, if that changes, the Warriors will be one of many teams interested in acquiring him ahead of the new season. This post originally appeared on Warriors Wire! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Atletico Madrid star's advice to Real Madrid-linked teenage prodigy – ‘Choose with your heart'

Franco Mastantuono has become the hottest topic at Real Madrid right now amid recent reports linking him with a move to Santiago Bernabeu. Indeed, reports suggest Real Madrid are closing in on the capture of the River Plate starlet, who recently made history by becoming the youngest player to ever represent the Argentine national team. Advertisement Apart from Real Madrid, Mastantuono has also been courted by Paris Saint-Germain, who are ready to offer more to the River Plate starlet. Julian Alvarez's advice to Mastantuono Amid ongoing speculation over his future, Mastantuono's national teammate, Julian Alvarez has offered a little advice to the young playmaker. Talking about Mastantuono's debut, the Atletico Madrid star said (h/t MARCA), 'I'm happy for the kids who got playing time, for Mastantuono's debut, for Nico Paz. Fortunately, good players always emerge. That's the history of Argentine football. 'There's always quality. We have to support the younger players so they can join in and play with confidence.' Franco Mastantuono recently made his senior team debut with Argentina (Photo by) Alvarez was then asked about Mastantuono's future, especially amid reports linking him to Real Madrid. Advertisement But even as an Atletico Madrid star, Alvarez refused to encourage Mastantuono to not join Real Madrid and instead offered a more diplomatic response. 'I spoke with him a bit. The truth is, everything that's happening to him makes me very happy. He's very young, but the things he does on the pitch and how he behaves off it makes him seem older,' he said. 'At his age, he's done incredible things. He has impressive quality. He's a star. I wish him the best, that he continues to grow. It depends on what he decides. I don't know what will happen,' he added. Finaly, Alvarez urged Mastantuono to choose with his heart and make sure he joins a club where he can continue to grow. Advertisement 'Let him choose with his heart, do what he thinks is best for him, and continue to grow,' he concluded. It remains to be seen whether or not Alvarez's words of wisdom have any impact on Mastantuono's decision making as the young playmaker looks to take the next step in his career. With Real Madrid leading the chase, two scenarios could pan out. The first scenario could see the Argentine join Los Blancos immediately while the latter could see him remain at River Plate until the end of the year and then join the club.
