Two men fined for causing disturbance during Songkran festival
PETALING JAYA: Two men were fined RM300 and RM350 each by the Magistrates' Court here today for causing annoyance to the public during the recent Songkran Water Festival at a shopping mall in Damansara.
Ch'ng Jin Wei, 27, and Ng Boo Sheng, 28, both air-conditioning maintenance workers, pleaded guilty during separate proceedings before Magistrates Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha and Farah Azura Mohd Saad.
The court ordered Ch'ng to serve 14 days in jail if he fails to pay the RM300 fine, while Ng faces 10 days' imprisonment if he does not pay the RM350 fine.
The two were jointly charged with causing a public nuisance during the festival at around 11 pm on April 20.
The charge, framed under Section 268 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum fine of RM400 upon conviction.
During mitigation, Ng's counsel Datuk Suraj Singh appealed for a lenient sentence, citing his client's cooperation, early guilty plea, and the fact that this was his first offence. He also said Ng had been remanded for two days and sustained injuries during the incident.
Ch'ng's lawyer, Datin Raj Preet Kaur, also urged for leniency, saying her client was remorseful and had apologised to all parties involved.
Deputy public prosecutors Ainul Athirah Jamalullail and Lim Leong Hui, however, requested a fair sentence to serve as a reminder for responsible conduct during public events.
Police had earlier detained five individuals following a scuffle that reportedly broke out during the Songkran celebration at the shopping mall.
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said preliminary investigations suggested the altercation stemmed from a disagreement over filling water guns used at the event.
A 56-second video of the incident, showing several individuals throwing chairs during the commotion, had circulated widely on social media.

TAWAU: Police arrested two men in separate drug-related operations on Monday, including one suspected of boiling and selling ketum juice to local addicts from his home. In the first case, a man in his 30s was detained during a raid on a house at PPR Taman Sri Semarak around 10.30am while he was resting in his living room. Advertisement The suspect allegedly admitted to boiling 21 bottles of ketum juice for sale at RM20 per bottle to local drug users. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police discovered 21 transparent 1.5 litre plastic bottles containing suspected ketum juice hidden in two separate refrigerators in the kitchen during a search of the premises. 'Initial investigations found the liquid contents are believed to be ketum juice with an estimated total weight of 31.2 litres valued at RM350,' Jasmin said in a statement Tuesday. The suspect has been remanded for further investigation under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which provides for fines or imprisonment, upon conviction. Initial urine screening tests on the suspect returned negative for drugs and checks revealed the local man had no prior criminal record. In a separate incident, police arrested another local man, aged 20, along Jalan Takada after finding 0.90 grams of methamphetamine worth RM100 in his trouser pocket at about 3.15pm. The suspect voluntarily surrendered the drugs to police during the operation conducted by police. Despite the drug possession, his initial urine screening test was negative and he also had no previous criminal record. Civil servant loses RM13,000 to scammers
KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant lost RM13,000 in savings after he was believed to have been scammed by imposters. The victim, who is in his 30s, was said to have received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and later, a policeman for spreading fake news on investments, job offers and gambling. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the victim allegedly got the calls on May 27, first from someone claiming to be an MCMC officer. 'The caller claimed that his (victim) phone number was involved in the dissemination of fake messages, and then the call was allegedly reconnected to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Perak police headquarters,' he said. After speaking for quite some time, the man was ordered to transfer RM13,000 to a bank account belonging to one Muhammad Azlan, for 'account protection', he said. Supt Mursalin said the victim was also instructed to update photos and personal details every three hours to the 'cop' as a way of reporting himself to the police. 'Later, the victim realised that he had been cheated and lodged a report at the Ranau police station on Tuesday night,' he said. Supt Mursalin said this case is now being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. He urged the public to keep calm and think rationally when receiving such calls from unknown persons or numbers to avoid getting scammed. He also warned against revealing any personal, banking or identification information through the phone, and to not carry out any monetary transactions online or via telephone. 'Always call back the police station or agencies allegedly involved on their official land-lines to verify any calls or matters,' said Supt Mursalin.

Singaporean to be charged today over viral Johor road rage incident
JOHOR BARU: A Singaporean man arrested over a road rage incident last Saturday, which was caught in a clip that went viral on social media, will be charged in the magistrate's court here today. The 40-year-old is expected to face charges under Section 426 of the Penal Code for mischief, which carries a penalty of up to three months' imprisonment, a fine, or both; and Section 509 for using words or gestures intended to insult another's modesty, an offence punishable by up to five years' jail, a fine, or both. Johor Baru (North) police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh confirmed that the man will be brought to court at 9am. He was arrested at 6.20pm on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the 31-year-old Malaysian BMW driver lodged a police report over the alleged road rage incident, which occurred near Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Skudai at 2.39pm on June 7. The altercation reportedly began when the suspect, who was driving a Singapore-registered Toyota Altis, allegedly honked repeatedly and tailgated the BMW, seemingly upset about being obstructed. The confrontation escalated when the suspect allegedly exited his vehicle, kicked the BMW and verbally insulted the driver.
