TAWAU: Police arrested two men in separate drug-related operations on Monday, including one suspected of boiling and selling ketum juice to local addicts from his home. In the first case, a man in his 30s was detained during a raid on a house at PPR Taman Sri Semarak around 10.30am while he was resting in his living room.
Advertisement The suspect allegedly admitted to boiling 21 bottles of ketum juice for sale at RM20 per bottle to local drug users. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police discovered 21 transparent 1.5 litre plastic bottles containing suspected ketum juice hidden in two separate refrigerators in the kitchen during a search of the premises. 'Initial investigations found the liquid contents are believed to be ketum juice with an estimated total weight of 31.2 litres valued at RM350,' Jasmin said in a statement Tuesday. The suspect has been remanded for further investigation under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, which provides for fines or imprisonment, upon conviction. Initial urine screening tests on the suspect returned negative for drugs and checks revealed the local man had no prior criminal record. In a separate incident, police arrested another local man, aged 20, along Jalan Takada after finding 0.90 grams of methamphetamine worth RM100 in his trouser pocket at about 3.15pm. The suspect voluntarily surrendered the drugs to police during the operation conducted by police. Despite the drug possession, his initial urine screening test was negative and he also had no previous criminal record. KOTA BARU: Thousands of express and tour buses are operating illegally nationwide using leased permits, a practice that contravenes the Land Public Transport Act 2010, the Bumiputera Express Bus Operators Association of Malaysia (PPBBM) said. PPBBM chairman Zainal Abidin Mehat said the issue of leasing public transport bus permits has been ongoing for some time. However, it only came to light following the recent fatal crash involving a tour bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) along the East–West Highway near Gerik, which claimed 15 lives. Zainal said some bus operators conduct business without any valid permit by purchasing second-hand buses and operating them under permits obtained from various other companies. This, he said, is because many bus operators, most of whom are former bus drivers, are unwilling to apply for permits due to the high upfront cost and the numerous procedures required by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) or the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD). "There are even companies that own dozens or hundreds of permits and take advantage by leasing them out, whether for express or tour buses, at a rate of RM500 per month per permit, raking in tens of thousands of ringgit monthly," he said. Zainal said that the practice of leasing express and tour bus permits has been going on for years. "I often receive complaints about this issue, but it remains unresolved because there is both supply and demand in the permit leasing market. "The modus operandi involves bus operators purchasing second-hand buses over 10 years old for between RM70,000 and RM100,000, repainting them to appear new and attractive, and using them as tour or express buses. "To avoid dealing directly with APAD or MOTAC, they simply lease permits from companies offering such services, paying RM500 a month," he told Berita Harian. Zainal said that due to high demand, some bus companies that have more than 100 express or tour bus permits lease out nearly all of them. These companies retain only a few permits for their own use to avoid detection. "Imagine a company with 100 permits earning RM500 per permit every month, they can easily make tens of thousands of ringgit monthly," he said. "They lack the proper knowledge to become legitimate operators and are only chasing fast money, with little concern for the safety of future passengers. PORTADOWN, June 13 — Northern Ireland was rocked by a fourth night of anti-immigrant unrest yesterday as police clashed with protestors in a second town, undeterred by driving rain. Firing plastic baton rounds, police sought to drive back several hundred people who had gathered in the town of Portadown—some 50 miles (80 kilometres) southeast of Ballymena, where an alleged sexual assault that sparked the violence took place—an AFP correspondent saw. Three nights of unrest had already hit Ballymena, some 30 miles (48 kilometres) northwest of Belfast, leaving a trail of damage, with 41 police officers injured and 15 people arrested. The clashes first erupted on Monday night after two teenagers were arrested for the alleged attempted rape of a young girl at the weekend. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody and had asked for a Romanian interpreter in court. BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 13 — Police are investigating an explosion at Taman Serumpun, here early this morning, which caused damage to three houses. Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) District Police Chief ACP Helmi Aris said they received information from the public regarding the incident at 1:05 am, reporting a loud explosion in the residential area. 'Police investigations found that the explosion is believed to have originated from a firecracker thrown into one of the houses, and the impact of the explosion also caused damage to two adjacent houses. 'The incident caused damage to the ceilings and yards of all three houses. Vehicles at two of the houses also sustained damage,' he said in a statement tonight. Helmi said that based on preliminary investigations, they do not rule out the possibility that the incident was caused by debt issues and that the act is suspected to have been carried out by two men in a car, but further investigation is still ongoing.
