Will There Be A Weapons Sequel? Director Zach Cregger Has His Say
The Barbarian director's latest big-screen offering centres around a small US town where every child in one elementary school class (except one, that is!) woke up at the same time one morning and disappeared into the darkness, and the impact of the mysterious incident on the local community.
Fans of Weapons have already praised the film for its many twists and turns, the performances from its star-studded cast and the sense of dread that Zach helps create over the course of the movie.
Naturally, speculation has already begun about whether a follow-up could be on the cards.
During a recent interview with Zach, Variety asked if he'd consider 'working on another story set in this world' – to which he responded that it's something that 'definitely' could be in the works.
He began: 'I've actually… it's funny you asked that. I can't help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I'm kind of excited about.'

Zach quickly added: 'I'm not going to do it next, and I probably won't do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I'd like to see it on the screen one day.'
Weapons ends on a pretty unambiguous note – with multiple main characters dead, including its central villain, and the children returning to their families (although they are traumatised by their harrowing experience).
And while we're usually not ones to call for sequels and follow-ups in lieu of new stories and ideas, if Zach Cregger did want to offer an origin story for the immediately-iconic Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan, that's something we'd absolutely be here for.

The Ending of ‘Weapons' Is Very Personal to Zach Cregger
You can't watch a movie like Weapons and not sense that parts of it come from deep within a person. The portrayals of family, fear, and loss—it's all heartbreaking and scary even before you get to the chills and thrills. Writer-director Zach Cregger fully admits the film was written as a way for him to cope with the loss of a good friend, but his personal connections to the material go even beyond that. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Cregger talked about some of the big reveals in the final act of the film and how they were inspired by his own upbringing. Spoilers to the film, we learn that the sole survivor of the classroom disappearance, Alex (Cary Christopher), is secretly taking care of his parents, who have been possessed by the magic of his aunt Gladys (Amy Madigan). Alex has to cook, clean, and feed his parents, who sit there completely helpless, all as a way to make sure they are keeping up the appearance of something normal. 'This is more of a diary entry about me,' Cregger said about the scenario. 'The last chapter of this movie is straight-up autobiographical. That was my childhood. You live with an alcoholic parent, and there's this inversion of the dynamic. The child can become the [caregiver].' Of course, in Weapons, Alex's parents aren't alcoholics. Cregger decided to make that parallel a little less obvious by making the influence on Alex's parents supernatural. Nevertheless, it's meant to evoke the same feelings. 'This foreign substance comes in and it changes everyone's behavior,' Cregger said. 'The house becomes a scary place. You can go to school and act like everything's cool, and then you come home and you hide from a zombie parent. That felt so real to me.' Knowing Cregger created this scenario as a bit of a way to work through his childhood struggles adds even more catharsis to Alex's eventual triumph over Gladys and the return of his parents. And yet, as per the final line of the movie, not all the children recover from the trauma. Which feels both sad and realistic. Weapons is now in theaters. Read more from Cregger about the making of the film here and here. And head over to Vanity Fair to read more about the ending, including the look and history of Gladys. Want more io9 news? Will Cate Blanchett Star in a ‘Squid Game' US Spin-Off?
Ever since that shocking Squid Game season 3 ending, fans have been talking about the possibility of a US spin-off series starring Cate Blanchett (and helmed by David Fincher). And though Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously revealed to Variety that Cate's cameo in the series finale was 'not related' to the rumored spin-off, the actress is now weighing in on her future with the franchise. When asked about starring in an English-language spin-off or sequel series, Cate told Variety she is 'wildly open to anything,' adding, 'I mean, I'd love to work with David [Fincher] again. It's been ages. But no, I don't know anything more than you do. I'm not being coy. I really don't.' Way back in October 2024—long before the Squid Game series finale aired—Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed for Netflix with David Fincher at the helm of the project. However, little else has been heard about the project since in June 2025, Hwang Dong-hyuk said he hadn't 'heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game.' But fret not, because the Squid Game creator is open to the possibly of a spin-off series. As he told Entertainment Weekly, 'I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spin-offs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.' And from the sound of it, Cate is down as chances are, even if she did know anything about a sequel series, she wouldn't be allowed to share any deets. While speaking about her Squid Game cameo with Variety (which she apparently landed 'out of the blue'), Cate noted how everything she learned about her role 'was on a need-to-know basis.' As she explained, 'I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.'

Popular singer scolds fan for bringing baby to concert. ‘Protect his ears or something.'
Colombian music star Maluma stopped a recent concert to call out a fan who brought their infant to the show. The musician paused his show in Mexico City over the weekend to point out a fan holding a baby in the crowd. The rapper and singer then scolded the concert attendee for not properly preparing the young child for the hubbub of the show. 'With all due respect… how old are they? A year old? Less?" Maluma asked in Spanish, according to a translation by Variety. 'Do you think it's a good idea to bring a one-year-old baby to a concert where the decibels are f------ high, where the sound is super loud?' Footage of the music star's concert interruption has since gone viral. 'Next time, protect their ears or something. For real. It's heavy. It's your responsibility. You're waving them around like they're a toy. That baby doesn't want to be there, for real,' Maluma said. 'I'm telling you with all love and respect, now that I'm a father… would never bring them to a concert. For the next time, be a bit more aware.' Maluma welcomed his first child, Paris, into the world in March 2024 with his girlfriend Susana Gómez. The show was one of three dates in Mexico City as part of the +Pretty +Dirty tour. The tour will continue through August. 23 with three more shows in Mexico and one in El Salvador.
