New electric buses to not carry ads despite suggestion by CAG

The Hindu23-04-2025

The new electric buses set to be launched under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interchange scheme will not carry advertisements, said a senior Transport Department official on Wednesday.
The buses will bear the name of the scheme and cut-outs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, added the official.
In its report, tabled in the Delhi Assembly last month, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had suggested increasing the non-fare revenue of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and highlighted 'missed opportunities' to generate revenue by carrying advertisements.
'There was a proposal to allot advertisement space on DTC buses. However, it was dropped,' said another official.
The nine-metre feeder buses were ready to be inducted into the DTC fleet, but the government delayed the flag-off owing to the national mourning over Pope Francis's death.
The fleet, comprising 330 e-buses, is likely to be flagged off from the Kushak Nallah depot next week.

New Delhi: Minister of State for External Affairs Dr. L. Murugan receives 268 Indian nationals repatriated from Israel under Operation Sindhu upon their arrival in an IAF C-17 flight from Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, in New Delhi. (Photo: IANS/X/@MEAIndia) New Delhi: A total of 4415 Indian nationals – 3597 from Iran and 818 from Israel – have been evacuated so far using 19 special evacuation flights during Operation Sindhu, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. The evacuated Indian nationals included more than 1500 women and 500 children. The flights, including three C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, also brought home 14 OCI card-holders, nine Nepali nationals, four Sri Lankan nationals and one Iranian spouse of an Indian national. As tensions escalated in West Asia, the government of India had launched Operation Sindhu on June 18 to evacuate Indian nationals from conflict zones in Iran and Israel. On June 17-18, Indian Missions in Tehran, Yerevan, and Ashgabat coordinated the evacuation of Indian nationals from Iran through land border crossings to Armenia and Turkmenistan. Special evacuation flights commenced on June 18 and facilitated the return of Indian nationals to New Delhi. The majority of evacuations were carried out through Mashhad, after Iran opened its airspace for evacuation flights under Operation Sindhu on June 20 on New Delhi's request. 'We thank the Government of Iran for this gesture. A total of 3597 Indian nationals — including students, workers, professionals, pilgrims and fishermen – from more than 15 Indian states – were brought back to India from Yerevan, Ashgabat and Mashhad from June 18-26 using 15 special evacuation flights,' the MEA stated. The Israel leg of Operation Sindhu commenced on June 23 with the Indian Missions in Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Amman and Cairo facilitating the movement of Indian nationals across land borders to Jordan and Egypt. A total of 818 Indian nationals were evacuated, including students, workers and professionals. They were evacuated from Amman and Sharm al Sheikh from June 22-25 using four evacuation flights, including three IAF C-17 aircraft. 'The Government of India is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad. Under PM Narendra Modi's guidance, Operation Sindhu is another demonstration of this commitment. We thank the Governments of Iran, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Armenia and Turkmenistan for their support during Operation Sindhu. Indian Missions will stay engaged with host Governments and the Indian community in Iran, Israel and the wider West Asia region,' read the statement issued by the MEA. It added that, in view of the re-opening of the airspace, evacuation operations were halted on June 25 and further actions will be taken based on the evolving situation in West Asia.

Delhi Chief Minister adds more wheels to public bus fleet

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the Delhi Transport Corporation's (DTC) biggest bus terminus in north-west Delhi, in Narela Sector A-9, on Friday. She also flagged off 105 new Delhi Electric Vehicle interconnector (DEVi) buses at the depot. She said that the transport hub will boost public transport in north-west Delhi by connecting it with several other public transport hubs in the city and termed it a 'testament to the Delhi government's commitment to strengthening public transport and building a cleaner, greener, and more connected Capital'. Currently, over 2,000 electric buses are operational in Delhi, and the government is actively working towards achieving 100% electrification of the entire transport system by 2027, she said, adding that many of the new DEVi buses will be driven by women. Ms. Gupta also attacked the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of corruption and of pushing the public transporter into huge losses. 'Buses are Delhi's lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced, and corruption was committed,' she said. Citing a Comptroller and Auditor General report, which was tabled in the Assembly in March this year, on the functioning of the DTC under AAP's tenure, the CM said that the public transporter's liabilities had bumped up from ₹28,263 crore in 2015-16 to ₹65,274 crore in 2021-22. She alleged that the AAP government's 'pink tickets' scheme, which allowed women to travel on buses free of cost, was marred by corruption and that the panic buttons were installed 'just for show'. The Opposition party did not issue a response to the allegations levelled by the CM. Built in 90 days In her address following the inauguration in Narela, the CM said, 'The depot was constructed in 90 days, reflecting the government's efficiency and dedication.' She added that the 'modern transport hub', built for ₹2.63 crore and developed over 4,000 sqm of land, has a pantry, medical facilities, clean toilets, RO water plants, and EV charging stations, among other amenities. 'It will be a hub for 75 buses, most of which will be electric, connecting north-east Delhi with other transport hubs, such as the Old Delhi railway station and Mori Gate,' said Ms. Gupta. The nine-metre low-floor, air-conditioned, wheelchair-friendly DEVi buses are equipped with panic buttons, CCTV cameras, and real-time tracking features.
