Louth girls ready for kick-off as they chase Gaynor Cup glory in top Limerick tournament

The academy's 2011 squad (under-14s) are testing themselves against elite teams from across the country in Ireland's premier underage football tournament, which takes place at the University of Limerick.
The Louth girls' group campaign kicks off against Kilkenny this Monday at 6pm, followed by a double header tomorrow as they take on Mayo at noon and Tipperary South at 6pm. All teams in the competition then progress to the various knockout matches which run from Wednesday until Friday, with a Cup, Shield, Bowl and Trophy all up for grabs.
Louth's campaign officially kicked off last Thursday with a special Gaynor Cup launch night at the Monasterboice Inn, to mark the beginning of what promises to be a thrilling journey through the iconic national tournament.
To celebrate their selection, each squad member was presented with their official squad number and kit, whilst the coaching staff overseeing the trip were introduced.
Head coach and LSGL chairperson Robbie Corr said: 'The Gaynor Cup is the pinnacle of U14 girls' football in Ireland, and our squad is full of talent, ambition and pride in representing Louth.'
'Everyone at the LSGL would like to thank all our sponsors for supporting the squad as they head to such a prestigious tournament. We hope the girls enjoy a brilliant and memorable tournament and we wish them the best of luck.'
Mick Neville, FAI regional development officer for Co Louth, said: 'This is more than football. It's about teamwork, opportunity and inspiring the next generation of female athletes.'

Drogs must act fast to resolve Conference League conflict

Trivela's ownership of Drogheda United may have to be divested to prevent the FAI Cup holders losing their place in the Europa Conference League draw on June 13. Uefa rules debar clubs with the same owners facing each other in competition for sporting integrity purposes. An obstacle has arisen for Drogs due to Silkeborg IF qualifying from the Danish league for the same competition over the weekend. American investors Trivela possess both clubs within their multi-club stable – Drogheda's on a full 100% stake and their latest purchase, Silkeborg, with an 80% shareholding. A statement released by the Louth club on Sunday night offered no assurance of Drogs' first foray into Europe for 12 years proceeding, other than citing ongoing discussions with Uefa. Those talks will centre on the degree of control Trivela carry over each entity. English FA Cup winners Crystal Palace are also deadlocked in negotiations with the governing body due to a potential conflict with Lyon's entrance to the Europa League. American John Textor has stakes in each both Palace argue his minority 25% shareholding doesn't accord him stewardship of decision-making. He owns 41% of Lyon. Drogs must act fast to resolve the blockers because in such conflicts, precedence is given to the club which finishes highest in the league. Drogs qualified through the Cup, Silkeborg the league. FAI Cup runners-up Derry City are ineligible to replace Drogs as, according to the Derry Journal, they didn't apply for a Uefa licence.

Spillane slams GAA and RTE over 'own goal' & questions 'absence of common sense'

Pat Spillane has blasted RTE and the GAA for an 'absolute absence of common sense' over the decision not to show any live All-Ireland Football Championship matches the weekend before last on free-to-air TV. The Kerry legend noted how no Premier League games were being shown on the same day due to the last round of fixtures all being played on the Sunday, stating that RTE and the GAA had scored 'a major own goal'. Louth v Monaghan and Donegal v Tyrone were both shown on GAA+. He wrote in his Sunday World column: "We had Meath v Cork, which was always going to be a close and competitive game. Louth, the Cinderella story of the championship to date, were playing Monaghan. "Last year's All-Ireland champions Armagh met last year's Division 1 league winners Derry. And we had an absolute blockbuster between two of the big guns, Donegal and Tyrone. "In a congested season, this was another glaring example of poor promotion." Spillane also took issue with the fact on the day that all four matches took place, RTE showed three hours of racing from the Curragh as the Irish 2,000 Guineas, a race worth €495,000, took place. He said the meeting had an attendance smaller than the smallest crowd at any of the four football clashes that afternoon and also questioned RTE's decision to show "three-and-a-half hours of Champions Cup rugby with no Irish interest". The selection of Saturday evening entertainment by RTE didn't impress the eight-time All-Ireland winner either. "How about a GAA game at 7.0 on Saturday night – prime-time viewing – on RTÉ2? No such luck, as RTÉ2 were showing Super Dogs with Extraordinary Jobs," stated Spillane.
