Traffic gardaí 'letting their colleagues down' if they aren't 'doing their jobs', says Tánaiste
It follows Garda Commissioner Drew Harris' comments on a report that found some gardaí showed a "blatant disregard" for roads policing duties while they knew their actions were being reviewed.
The Tánaiste said he would like to read the report and said it is 'surprising' that the Government had not seen it.
'Any member of An Garda Siochana who is acting in the way that the commissioner outlined is seriously letting their colleagues down in the first instance, colleagues who work every day to keep us safe,' Mr Harris said.
'[They] would absolutely be undermining our road safety efforts. In this country, there are far too many empty seats at far too many kitchen tables.'
Mr Harris, who is also defence minister, confirmed that he will meet with Sean Rooney's mother, Natasha, next week.
Pte Rooney was killed while on UN peacekeeping duty in Lebanon in December 2022. On Monday, a tribunal sentenced the main defendant in the case, Mohammad Ayyad, to death. He remains at large however.
In a statement, Ms Rooney criticised the Irish government and Mr Harris, suggesting he should have spoken to her, and not for her. Mr Harris said he will not comment further until he meets with her next week.
'Natasha is a grieving mother fighting for justice for her son who died while serving with absolute distinction wearing the uniform of Óglaigh na hÉireann,' he said. 'He has my absolute and total respect, as does his family.'

Garda hospitalised after being assaulted while arresting sword-wielding man
A man has been charged with assaulting a garda after he was caught brandishing a sword in South Dublin last night. Officers responded to calls from locals that a man was walking around the Ballyogan area of South Dublin, armed with a sword in the early hours of this morning. When officers responded they attempted to apprehend the man, who was carrying what appeared to be a sword. It is understood the man, who is originally from an Eastern European country, has been residing in Ireland for some time, and gardai do have mental health concerns regarding this incident. One officer was minorly injured in the course of the arrest, before the man was apprehended and disarmed. The man was taken to Blackrock Garda station where he was subsequently charged with assault. He remains in Garda custody and is set to appear in court on Monday morning. The injured Garda was taken to hospital and has since been discharged. In a statement about the incident gardai said: 'Gardaí at Blackrock responded to reports of a male in possession of a sword in the Ballyogan area of Dublin shortly after 1:30am on Sunday, 3rd July 2025. The individual, a male in his 40s, was arrested and has since been charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear before the Courts (CCJ 2) on Monday, 4th August 2025. 'A member of An Garda Síochána (male) sustained an injury while responding and was taken to hospital for assessment. He has since been discharged. As the matter is now before the courts, An Garda Síochána is not providing further information at this time.' BBC faces criticism over delay in paying court-ordered damages to Gerry Adams

They contained an allegation that Mr Adams sanctioned the killing of former Sinn Fein official Denis Donaldson. Mr Adams denied any involvement. In May, a jury at the High Court in Dublin found in his favour and awarded him 100,000 euros (£84,000) after determining that was the meaning of words included in the programme and article. The BBC, which was found by the jury not to have acted in good faith nor in a fair and reasonable way, was also ordered to pay the former Sinn Fein leader's legal costs. Mr Adams previously indicated that he planned to donate what he receives to good causes. He specified that these would include for children in Gaza as well as groups in the Irish language sector and those who are homeless. A source close to Mr Adams told the PA news agency: 'The delay by the BBC is deplorable and it should move speedily towards discharging the order of the court.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'Total costs will be finalised and payable in due course.' The driver of the car, an adult male aged in his late teens, who was sole occupant of the car, was airlifted to Cork University Hospital. It is understood that he is being treated for "serious injuries." The extent of his injuries is not known at this time. Gardaí have carried out an examination of the scene and the road has now been reopened. In a statement this afternoon, a spokesperson for the force urged anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. It comes after a man and a woman were rushed to hospital following a two-vehicle crash in Co. Donegal. The collision took place on the Main Street of Kerrykeel village in Co Donegal shortly before 11am yesterday morning. The driver of a car, a man in his 40s, was rushed to Letterkenny University Hospital in a condition understood to be serious. The driver of the second car involved in the crash, a woman who is aged in her 70s, was also taken to hospital for assessment. The extent of her injuries is not known at this time. In a statement this afternoon, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí at Milford are appealing for witnesses following a two-vehicle collision in Kerrykeel, County Donegal, on Saturday, 2nd of August 2025.
