MELAKA : As Merdeka Day approaches, Malaysians – especially those with a flair for the culinary arts – are showing their patriotism in sweet and creative ways.
Patriotic cakes have emerged not merely as desserts but as edible expressions of national pride: beneath layers of fondant and cream lie hope and love for the country.
For baker and entrepreneur Hilaliyah Mohamed Hanif, 50, creating patriotic cakes is about more than just fulfilling customer requests. 'The patriotic spirit naturally seeps in,' she told Bernama.
'Over the past 16 years, I have made more than 10 patriotic-themed cakes for Merdeka Day, including a savoury one made of pulut kuning (turmeric-infused glutinous rice).'
Her designs are often inspired by cultural elements such as songket patterns, wau, hibiscus, traditional 'tanjak' headgear, and iconic landmarks in Malaysia.
'These symbols may be familiar, but on cakes, they evoke a deep sense of pride – both in the maker and the person enjoying it,' she said.
Among her most memorable works was a cake shaped like a book, created for Teacher's Day in 2015 and inspired by the poem 'Guru Oh Guru' by national laureate Usman Awang.
'Although it wasn't for Merdeka, it carried strong patriotic value by honouring educators. It shows national pride can be expressed in many forms,' Hilaliyah added.

The trend is also gaining traction in the hospitality sector, with one hotel here offering Jalur Gemilang-themed cupcakes to boost the Merdeka spirit among guests.
According to head pastry chef Muzaffar Shah Yusoff, 51, cake-making has become a creative medium that connects people with national identity and values.
'Our cupcakes are visually appealing and carry a message that patriotism can be expressed in light-hearted and creative ways,' he shared.
Muzaffar, who has created large-scale patriotic cakes including a 3m-by-1.5m version featuring national elements, said such projects require meticulous preparation.
'It is challenging, but the reward comes when guests are moved. It motivates us to keep creating cakes that embody the patriotic spirit and tell stories of our history, culture and the Malaysian spirit,' he concluded.

Ringgit closes higher versus greenback, regional currencies

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar and its regional peers amidst cautious sentiments, after the United States Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes revealed that almost all participants supported keeping the interest rate unchanged. At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.2235/2275 against the US dollar from yesterday's close of 4.2250/2290. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said FOMC minutes last night showed that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is maintaining its current stance as it continues to learn about the impact of the tariff shocks on inflation. 'But the dissenting views by two FOMC members who opted for a 25 basis points cut in the last meeting suggest that the impact from the tariff hike on inflation is expected to be transitory. 'We shall see whether these views would reverberate among the FOMC members as they learn from the incoming data,' he told Bernama, adding that market players will closely monitor the policy signals from the Fed's Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium tomorrow. At the close, the ringgit settled mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose versus the British pound to 5.6899/6953 from 5.7033/7087 on Wednesday and inched up vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8595/8626 from 2.8648/8677 yesterday, but dropped against the euro to 4.9226/9263 from 4.9196/9242 previously. At the same time, the local note traded higher against other Asean currencies. It strengthened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2819/2853 from 3.2864/2898 at Wednesday's close, gained against the Thai baht to 12.9460/9638 from 12.9756/9935 yesterday, edged up vis-à-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.6 from 259.6/260.0 and inched up against the Philippine peso to 7.40/7.42 from 7.41/7.42 yesterday. — Bernama

YTL Corp FY2025 net profit dips to RM1.88b, revenue edges up to RM30.82b

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — YTL Corporation Bhd recorded a lower net profit of RM1.88 billion for the financial year ended June 30, 2025 (FY2025) from RM2.14 billion in the previous financial year. Revenue, however, rose to RM30.82 billion in FY2025 against RM30.49 billion, mainly attributable to the group's utilities business, it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia today. For the fourth quarter ended June 30, 2025 (4Q 2025), the group's net profit was marginally higher at RM547.17 million compared to RM534.96 million in the same quarter of the preceding year, while revenue slipped to RM7.67 billion versus RM8.23 billion. YTL Corp said its utilities segment reported revenue of RM5.19 billion in 4Q compared to RM5.96 billion in the corresponding quarter of the preceding year, while profit after tax stood at RM841.3 million against RM812.6 million previously. Meanwhile, the group's construction segment revenue declined primarily due to lower revenue from external projects, while the management services and others segment, as well as hotel operations, recorded a higher revenue and profit before tax. In a statement, YTL group executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh Sock Ping said the group continued to deliver a strong set of results in 4Q, registering five per cent and 40 per cent increases in revenue and profit after tax, respectively, compared to the previous quarter, with the better performance mainly driven by the utilities segment. YTL Corp also declared an interim dividend of five sen per ordinary share for FY2025, with the book closure and payment dates on October 2, 2025 and October 23, 2025, respectively. — Bernama
