After Sergei's standout performance, Ovechkin was asked if he could envision playing on the same team as his son. Speaking to RB Sports' Dilshad Lomovskikh, the Washington Capitals captain revealed the dream had already been fulfilled in his own way.
'I already went out on the ice with him a year ago, and that's when my dream came true,' Ovechkin said via RMNB. 'In 15 years, I'll be 55. At 55, I'm not ready to play professional hockey.'

Had it happened, Ovechkin and Sergei would have been only the second father-son duo in NHL history, joining Gordie Howe and his sons, Mark and Marty.

Ovechkin's hockey legacy is clearly inspiring his children, but they're carving out different roles on the ice. In a December 2024 interview, he revealed Sergei wants to be a forward, while younger brother Ilya, born in 2020, prefers the goalie position.
Both boys have already shown a natural feel for the game, often challenging each other in friendly matchups during family practice sessions.

Alex Ovechkin's career still defying the odds
Entering his 21st NHL season, Ovechkin is one of only three active players aged 40 or older. Last season, he surpassed Wayne Gretzky to become the league's all-time leading goal scorer, a milestone cementing his place among hockey's legends.
Since being drafted first overall by Washington in 2004, Ovechkin has recorded 1,623 points through 897 goals and 726 assists in 1,491 games. His crowning moment came in 2018, when he led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup title.
