Joao Palhinha predicts ‘something special' from Spurs despite Super Cup defeat

Glasgow Times3 days ago
Spurs were minutes away from winning a second trophy in the space of three months after goals by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero either side of half-time put them in control in Udine.
PSG upped the ante in the second period and, after Lee Kang-in reduced the deficit with five minutes left, fellow substitute Goncalo Ramos forced spot-kicks with a header in the fourth minute of stoppage time after a 2-2 draw.

Vitinha's miss coupled with successful kicks by Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur put Thomas Frank's team two up in the shootout, but Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to score from the spot and the French side claimed further silverware with a 4-3 victory.
Palhinha was eager to draw on the positives ahead of Tottenham being set to return to Champions League action next month for the first time in three seasons.
'It is football. At the end we are really sad. Not just the players but all the staff, all the crowd that came to support us during the game,' Palhinha said.
'I think we also need to feel proud for what we did until the 80 minutes. You know because we fought all the games with a top team and I think we showed what we are here to get in the future.
'We have all the conditions to achieve good things this season and I think the future will bring us something special.
'I think we have the hunger from all the players to achieve this title. Everyone gave all the maximum in this game and I think we showed what we are capable of.
'We played against a top team and I think we have everything, a top coach, top players in this squad, a top crowd with a lot of hunger to achieve titles and me and my team-mates will fight for it, for sure.
'A tough night, but I know that we will shape good things in the future. We just need to keep our head up.'
This was Palhinha's competitive debut for Spurs after he joined on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich.
Palhinha struggled during his debut campaign in Munich, but is excited to be back in the Premier League and London following two successful years at Fulham before Tottenham's opener at home to Burnley on Saturday.
He said: 'In the Premier League you have also every single week top games. I think we cannot relax and the good thing now is we have another game on Saturday to change the (bad) things and start with the right foot in the Premier League.
'I enjoyed when I played in Fulham the two years that I was there. I really miss the Premier League. I think it's a league that everyone plays and when you play there and go to play outside somewhere else, you miss something.
'I'm really proud to be back again to the Premier League. I'm really happy to be in this top club and top team. I just need to enjoy it.'
Proud.

Mohammed Kudus also made his debut for Tottenham and backed them to learn lessons from the defeat.
'We've shown that we can compete at the highest level, we have to take the positives and focus on the tasks we have ahead in the coming season,' Kudus insisted.
'This is a good step, of course a big disappointment but we have a lot more to play this season, a lot more competitions and we take this as a lesson and move forward.'

Cyriel Dessers transfer update as ‘long-time suitors still in for Rangers striker and move can't be ruled out'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CYRIEL DESSERS looked certain to leave Rangers earlier in the transfer window. But while it's all gone a little quiet, it's being reported that a move to Greece should NOT be ruled out. 2 Cyriel Dessers has regained his Rangers spot Credit: Kenny Ramsay 2 The striker was injured against Viktoria Plzen Credit: Willie Vass Dessers, 30, was heavily linked with a move to Greek Super League outfit AEK Athens during the early weeks of the window. Several reports coming out of the country had it as good as a done deal, with a number claiming that personal terms had been agreed - but crucially that a fee between the clubs hadn't been. Speaking early last month, Rangers boss Russell Martin confirmed a bid had been received for Dessers but said it was "nowhere near out valuation at the football club." Martin didn't confirm whether AEK Athens were indeed the club to have made a move. Dessers was injured at the time of Martin's comments but has since recovered and regained his place in the Rangers side. He scored from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen in Champions League qualifying a couple of weeks ago. Dessers started the second leg in midweek too but went off after suffering what appeared to be a nasty injury. He missed Saturday's Premier Sports Cup win over Alloa but Rangers hope he'll be ready to face Club Brugge on Tuesday. While exit talk surrounding Dessers has gone a little quiet, a fresh report claims that AEK Athens ARE still interested in signing the striker. Journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos says they're still in for him. Billy Dodds on turning down Celtic for Rangers and surviving relegation scare with Aberdeen His report in Greek outlet Sportime claims that 'everything is open' with regards the club's pursuit of Dessers - especially now that his injury suffered during the week isn't as bad as first feared. The report says AEK Athens 'still have a lot to do' in the transfer market and that bringing in a striker remains a priority. But for someone to be signed, it's claimed AEK will need to move someone on. The report adds that a move for Dessers 'should not be ruled out.' AEK Athens' interest in Dessers looked to be over when they landed a new striker earlier this month. They signed former Real Madrid frontman Luka Jovic on a permanent deal from AC Milan back on August 5. But it seems they COULD still be heading back in for Dessers after all. Roy Keane sets target for Ruben Amorim and gives verdict on Man Utd transfers

Manchester United have brought in three new forwards for a combined £207.5million during the summer transfer window and Roy Keane has laid down a challenge for Ruben Amorim Roy Keane 'likes the look' of Manchester United's new signings and has told Ruben Amorim that this season should be about rebuilding. United legend Keane has run the rule over the Red Devils' three major additions; Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. ‌ Cunha and Mbeumo both started United's first game of the Premier League season against Arsenal while Sesko, who only joined the club last week in a £74million transfer deal, was named on the bench. The Red Devils also want to sign a midfielder and potentially a goalkeeper, having already spent £207.5m. ‌ Looking ahead to the new season, Keane told Sky Sports: "I think it's about trying to rebuild the team, get some confidence, get some momentum early in the season. Last year, obviously nowhere near good enough, we know that. ‌ "The biggest issue they had all season despite chatting about the goalkeeper and the defence, they didn't score enough goals. When you're not scoring enough goals, particularly if you're Manchester United when they've invested so much money, you're constantly under pressure. "They've obviously tried to fix that this summer. The signings, looking at them in pre-season, I know it's still early but yeah, the signs are good. "They've obviously brought two players in who know the Premiership, they're robust enough to deal with the challenge of that and obviously they needed a goalscorer, so they were constantly under pressure. Looking at it, I like the look of it." Turning his attention to the visit of Arsenal, the former United captain challenged Sesko to score on his Premier League debut. "This is a big start," Keane, speaking before line-ups had been confirmed, continued. "We saw players already putting a marker down at the weekend, so for any striker, Sesko goes to a new club, if he's starting, can he get up and running? Score a goal? Get that trust and belief, not just from the supporters of the club but from his team-mates." ‌ Amorim believes that the Red Devils need to start their rebuild by making Old Trafford a fortress again. "We've got to make it an enjoyable place for our fans. That is really important," the Portuguese said. "We start with one game against Arsenal, a very good team. Everyone in this room thinks Arsenal are going to win. I know that. But we will be there on Sunday to change things."
