Freedom from stench: New airport toilet blocks to make your journey a breeze

Kolkata: Following long-standing complaints from passengers about the poor quality of washrooms at Kolkata airport, a brand new set of modernised toilet blocks was inaugurated at the terminal building on Thursday.
Equipped with the latest toiletries and contemporary design features, airport officials said the upgrade was a part of a planned infrastructure development programme to refurbish all the existing toilet blocks inside the airport.
"Passengers have time and again flagged concerns and complaints about the quality of washrooms at the Kolkata airport. We took note of their complaints and are in the process of replacing all existing toilet blocks with new ones, which are set to last longer and have a fresh new look.
All the new toilets will be built in the same design," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria.
Beuria said the new set of toilets was inaugurated by a group of passengers as a symbolic gesture, as it comes in response to long-standing complaints over the subpar condition of washrooms at the airport. The airport has 28 toilet blocks. Of them, five blocks are brand new, and four more were already renovated. Six other blocks are under renovation, and the rest will also be renovated and refurbished by the end of this year, airport officials said.

The new washrooms have a modern vanity area with rectangular sinks and motion-sensor taps. The mirrors are backlit with soft lighting, adding a sleek and upscale feel to the restroom. There are also recessed ceiling lights and LED accents in the ceiling design, giving a clean and bright ambiance. A decorative vertical garden panel has also been placed in the new toilet blocks with modern aesthetics and functionality in mind — neutral tones, ambient lighting, and smart fixtures.
"The Rs 5-crore project comprises the demolition and reconstruction of existing toilets with new floor and wall tiles, sanitaryware, and fixtures. Basins made of acrylic solid surface that were installed earlier are being replaced by ceramic ones, as the former ones were stained by gutka and paan spits," said another airport official.
Officials said housekeeping staffers were being trained and motivated to maintain the cleanliness of toilets to keep them stain and stink-free. "We are monitoring the functioning of the agency that has been contracted to do the housekeeping work. Action will be taken if maintenance is not up to the mark," said an official. Of the 80 individual toilets, 20 are on the arrival level and 60 in departure. This includes 28 washrooms each for men and women and 24 for the physically disabled.

Due to my health problems, the train made travel much easier." Khajanchi, who is recovering from a foot fracture, added, "The convenience offered by Vande Bharat is unmatched. I had two fractures, so we had to cancel our earlier car and train bookings. But this train made the journey possible and comfortable." Another traveller highlighted the new service's time-saving aspect: "Earlier, travelling to Jammu meant taking a flight or a long taxi ride. Now, the Vande Bharat train will make the same journey in nearly the same time as a flight. It's a great move by the government to connect Kashmir with the rest of India." He added, "This will benefit not just tourists but also officials and local commuters. Once extended to Jammu in two months, the journey will become even smoother. People from the South who earlier avoided long flights or multiple modes of transport can now come by train." With the commencement of this route, many believe Kashmir will witness a sharp rise in tourism, as Vande Bharat promises a fast, reliable, and scenic journey through the valley. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, officially connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir via rail. This marks a major milestone in strengthening railway infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. During his visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River. Speaking on the occasion, he said the development projects will further boost Jammu and Kashmir's growth journey. The train passes through two engineering marvels: the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world.

‘IndiGo, you're going down': Man misses connection flight from Jaipur, claims he lost Rs 2.65 lakh deal
A LinkedIn post by Chayan Garg has stirred debate online after he recounted how poor handling by IndiGo staff at Jaipur airport allegedly caused him to miss a crucial flight, ultimately costing him a client deal worth Rs 2.65 lakh. In a post titled 'IndiGo, you're going down,' Garg described how what was meant to be a routine work trip from Jaipur to Mumbai turned into him losing a 'high-stakes client meeting.' 'I reached the airport at 4:40 AM, cleared security by 5:10 AM, and was told by the IndiGo executive that boarding would begin in 10–15 minutes,' Garg wrote. With time to spare and the boarding gate crowded, he said he briefly stepped away to use the washroom. 'When I came back after 12 minutes, I was told boarding was closed. I was literally surprised as the boarding was supposed to start, not end.' What frustrated him further, he claimed, was the lack of any announcement. When he questioned the staff, he was told that Jaipur is a 'silent airport' where announcements are minimal. However, Garg countered this by pointing out that 'just minutes earlier, there was an announcement for the Dehradun flight from IndiGo.' When he mentioned this to the staff, 'they denied it straight to my face.' Despite pleading with staff and explaining the urgency of his client meeting, Garg says he was not allowed to board and received no support. 'No alternate option. No help with the next flight. No refund. No empathy,' he wrote. The fallout, he claims, was severe: 'We lost the client. Rs 2.65 lakh down the drain. A month's effort gone in seconds.' He ended the post by tagging consumer rights advocate Revant Himatsingka and asking for help, 'I'm genuinely clueless right now.' The post quickly went viral, striking a chord with many online. 'Dear Mr Garg, we understand how disappointing it can be to miss a flight, and our carefully planned travel gets disrupted. However, as per our review, the boarding gate closed 25 minutes before departure, in line with standard procedure. Unfortunately, your arrival was after gate closure, by which time final preparations for take-off were already underway. Our airport team offered the next available flight to support you, and while we respect your decision not to proceed with it, we genuinely appreciate your patience and understanding. In a big step for better travel in Jammu and Kashmir, the Vande Bharat Express has now started regular service between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra from Saturday. According to Northern Railway, the fast train will run six days a week and will greatly reduce the time it takes to travel between the Kashmir Valley and the famous religious town of Katra. This is seen as a major improvement in the region's transport system. With the new train, the journey between Srinagar and Katra will now take only three hours, which is less than half of the usual six to seven hours it takes by road. There will be two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains on this new route: Train Nos. 26404/26403 and 26401/26402. These trains will stop at Banihal along the way. What makes these trains special is that they are built to handle extreme winter weather. They come with heaters, insulated toilets, heated windshields, and defrosting features to help the driver see clearly even in snow and fog. Coaches include a heating system for sub-zero conditions in Srinagar, 360-degree rotating seats and charging points for passenger comfort The first train no 26401 commenced from Katra at 8:10 am and reached Srinagar at 11:08 am. The same train will return in the afternoon from Srinagar at 2:00 PM and reach Karta at 4:58 PM. This train service will not be available on Tuesday. Another train no 26403 will start from Katra at 2:55 PM and will reach Srinagar at 5:53. The same train will return from Srinagar the next day at 8 am. This service will not operate on Wednesday. The train has two classes Chair Car (CC) and Executive Class (EC). The price of a chair car ticket is Rs 715 and the price of an executive class ticket is Rs 1320. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the first run of the Vande Bharat Express trains between Srinagar and Katra. This comes after the successful completion of the 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line, a major engineering achievement that includes the world-famous Chenab Bridge, the highest railway arch bridge in the world. Until now, trains only operated on two separate routes: Banihal to Baramulla in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu to Udhampur to Katra in the Jammu region. With this new rail link, the Valley is now fully connected by train to the rest of India. The launch of the Vande Bharat Express is expected to be a game-changer. It will offer faster and more reliable travel for local people, tourists, and especially pilgrims visiting the holy Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Thanks to all-weather capabilities and modern onboard features, the Vande Bharat Express promises a comfortable and premium travel experience, while also strengthening the connection between North India and Kashmir.
