Arsenal dealt major blow as Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams holds talks with two European rivals ahead of potential summer transfer
Arsenal have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Nico Williams after the highly-rated youngster held talks with two European rivals.
The Gunners are looking to bolster their attacking ranks ahead of next season, having seen a shortage of forwards derail their title charge last season.
Williams has long been linked with a move to the Emirates however it seems as though they have fallen behind in the race to sign the Bilbao starlet.
Mail Sport understands that Williams has held talks with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich as he explores a potential move away from Bilbao.
The 22-year-old stamped his mark as one of the most promising wingers in football after starring at Euro 2024 with tournament winners Spain, forming a formidable wing partnership with Lamine Yamal.
Williams is said to be earning around £6.7million per year at Athletic Club, but reports claimed that the Spain international had indicated he will lower his demands to secure a move away.
The 22-year-old winger played 45 times in all competitions for Athletic Club last season, scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists.
Williams had played a key role in Spain's European Championships triumph last year, starting six of their seven matches in Germany.
The winger scored Spain's opening goal in the 2-1 final victory over England in Berlin.
Williams has so far made 28 appearances for the national team and has scored six goals.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid's Rodrygo has also emerged as a top target for the Gunners, who are looking to add firepower to their team.
The Brazilian put big clubs across Europe on alert when he reportedly told Madrid he never wanted to play for them again having refused to feature in last month's El Clasico against Barcelona.
The Brazilian winger was said to be upset about playing a secondary role behind superstar team-mates Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham, and was increasingly warming the bench under Carlo Ancelotti last season.
Los Blancos would demand a significant fee if they are to part ways with Rodrygo, believed to be somewhere in the region of £70m.

14 June 2025 1:35pm 1:35PM In the hands of the gods… The weather has decided too many previous Le Mans' to remember, with the threat and risk of rain never far away. Given the track is an enormous 13.6km long, sections of the track can be drenched while the rest of it remains dry, such is the uncertainty over when and where storms could hit. Catch the rain at the wrong time and it can wreck an entire race, but catch it at the right times and teams can gain significant ground if the gods play into their favour. So how is the forecast looking for the next 24 hours? There is a fair deal of cloud around as we head towards the start, but there hasn't been any showers so far today and the forecast suggests we should be in store for a completely dry race, with Sunday looking to be a lovely blend of sunshine and clearer skies. However, the French Meteo Office issued a severe weather warning alert this morning that there remains the risk of severe thunderstorms, and given we've had a major downpour every day this week without fail, I'll believe a fully dry race when I see it. 1:23PM Welcome to Le Mans! The 93rd edition of Le Mans 24 Hours promises to be one of the most competitive events in the race's 102-year history as Cadillac, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Toyota, Alpine, Aston Martin and Peugeot battle it out for victory. The gruelling endurance race is made up of three categories, with the top-class Hypercars made of the world's leading supercar manufacturers. With three drivers for each car, teams must mix speed, strategy and precision to stay the course of the 24 hours' racing and reach the finish line in one piece. Behind the Hypercars comes the LMP2 category - Le Mans Prototype 2 to give it its full name - which consists of privateer teams who run similar-looking cars to the Hypercar category, albeit within the hybrid energy system that makes the top class that little bit faster. Finally, the LMGT3 class is filled with GT cars, racing versions of the supercars you'll see on the road with a mix of Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins, McLarens, Corvettes, BMWs, Ford's, Mercedes' and even a pair of Lexus'. The race gets under way from 3pm on Saturday - 4pm local time here in Le Mans - and concludes at the same time on Sunday with drivers running through the night in their bid to be the first to the finish line. It's McLaren's (yet unnamed) race car for the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown – the man you usually hear congratulating Lando and Oscar from the F1 pit wall – took the covers off it today in Le Mans ahead of this year's race. Why show a race car at a race you're not entering for two years? Because 2025 marks the 30th anniversary since McLaren rocked up at the Le Mans 24 Hours as a novice team, and took home a 1-3-4-5 (and -13) finish on its debut. The race car that year was the GTR version of the McLaren F1, a road car that its creator – one Gordon Murray – always proclaimed was never designed to compete because that would have compromised its design. Advertisement - Page continues below Still, it won on its debut, which handed McLaren the 'Triple Crown' of motorsport: wins at the Monaco GP, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. McLaren remains the only team to have managed that trio of victories, and come 2027 it'll be the only manufacturer with a chance of repeating that feat. No pressure, then? Quite. But McLaren knows it'll be coming into the top-tier Hypercar party very late. BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche and Toyota have all been competing for a few years, and latecomers like Alpine, Aston Martin and Lamborghini have all struggled. Plus by the time 2027 rolls around, Genesis will have a year of racing under its belt and big ol' Ford will also be making its debut. You might like Not entirely without coincidence though, McLaren's announcement came hours after the ACO (the organisers of Le Mans) and the FIA officially announced the extension of the Hypercar regulations until the end of 2032. That means McLaren will get at least six years of racing with its new car – and come in fresh when rivals have been around for half a decade or so. Advertisement - Page continues below To ensure its Formula 1 operation doesn't get distracted, McLaren will partner with United Autosports, a race team that Zak Brown co-owns, and who have won the LMP2 class at Le Mans and in the World Endurance Championship. Okay, okay, details please. Scant for now, but McLaren Racing will enter its car under the LMDh side of the 'Hypercar' regulations. LMH allows for a bespoke car, which is the route Ferrari, Toyota and Peugeot have taken. Everyone else – including Ford's forthcoming racer, and now McLaren – go with LMDh, which uses a bunch of off-the-shelf parts. Because cost. Those standard parts include the carbonfibre monocoque chassis, which must come from one of four spec suppliers. McLaren has chosen Dallara, who supply Cadillac and BMW already, and with whom McLaren currently competes with in IndyCar. What chance it'll have a V12 like the McLaren F1? None. The engine will be a twin-turbo V6, whose capacity has yet to be revealed. Power is capped by the regulations, at 671bhp, so it's about finding the most efficient way to make that figure. Yes, Ferrari uses its 120-degree V6 in the 499P racer and the F80 and 296 road cars, but McLaren's decision has been made long after its road engine was ever conceived. McLaren Automotive will collaborate with McLaren Racing to develop the new V6, mind. Between Le Mans and Formula 1, McLaren will be busy! Yes, and let's not forget that Le Mans is just the headline race of the full World Endurance Championship, and that McLaren has that IndyCar team and a Formula E team too. Might McLaren's F1 drivers get a race seat? Top Gear asked Zak Brown just that question. His response, with a smile: 'Lando [Norris] and Oscar [Piastri] have both given strong hints they'd like to do Le Mans one of these days, but I think right now they're laser-focused on the Formula 1 world championship. 'But I don't think there's a racing driver in the world that doesn't fancy having a go at Le Mans, and Oscar and Lando are definitely two of those, so let's see.'
