US-India trade deal: India may relent on GM animal feed, stays firm on dairy & agri

Time of India15 hours ago
New Delhi: India is looking to allow imports of certain genetically modified (GM) farm products used in animal feed as part of the proposed bilateral trade deal with the US but New Delhi remains firm on not giving concessions in market access in the sensitive dairy and agricultural sectors, people said.
Talks on the deal are nearing conclusion with some last minute finetuning, said a person privy to the development, adding it could be announced well before the July 9 deadline when the US government's moratorium on reciprocal tariffs ends.
An announcement on the trade deal is expected no later than the midnight of July 4-5, a second person said.
The deal could be unveiled in phases and the issue of levying taxes on digital services could also be done separately, the person said.
"Sensitive agriculture and dairy products are out of the deal. There could be some farm products such as apples where limited concessions are being worked out," said an official, adding that concessions for US-made automobiles are high on priority list.

India is demanding greater access for labour-intensive industries such as textiles and electronics. "Only those goods are being considered where both sides are on the same page," the official said.
The US wants duty concessions in sectors such as industrial goods, automobiles such as electric vehicles, wines, petrochemical products, dairy, agriculture items such as apples, tree nuts, and GM crops. It also wants to export
GM corn and soya bean
to India.
"For non-GM crops, we want a certificate, but they say that it's difficult to do so because both varieties grow together," the official said.

Rupee gains for second straight week; ends day lower at 85.39/$

The Indian Rupee lost momentum after the previous session's gains even as the dollar and crude oil prices slipped. The domestic currency opened 7 paise lower at 85.39 against the dollar on Friday, according to Bloomberg. The unit gained for the second straight week. Asian currencies traded mixed during the session as caution loomed over the US reciprocal tariff deadline. The unit has depreciated by around 0.21 per cent in June and has fallen by 0.18 per cent in the first six months of the calendar year. With the US dollar cash market shut today, rupee movement will likely be driven by traders hedging their positions, Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP said. While the US-India interim trade deal is said to be in its final stages, it has yet to be announced, as Trump prepares to communicate new tariff structures to individual countries, he noted. The US and Vietnam signed a trade deal that'll levy a 20 per cent tariff on exports to America and a 40 per cent levy on goods deemed to be transshipped. On Wednesday, Trump said that the US and India will soon finalise a trade deal with 'much lower tariffs'. Meanwhile, the dollar index remained firm following strong US jobs data. The country added 1,47,000 jobs, more than forecast, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked down to 4.1 per cent. A stronger-than-expected US non-farm payroll (NFP) report has dampened the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate cut in July 2025, pushing the US dollar higher, Bhansali said. The dollar index, the measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.26 per cent at 96.93. The index has fallen 10.86 per cent so far this year.

All About Jane Street, US Trading Firm Barred From Indian Markets

Mumbai: India has barred one of the world's largest quant trading firms, Jane Street, from accessing its securities market after an investigation found it made "unlawful gains", taking the most stringent action ever against a foreign trading firm. The markets regulator also impounded $567 million from US-based Jane Street, which said it disputed the findings. Here are facts about Jane Street and its India presence: What is Jane Street? Jane Street has more than 3,000 staff in five offices across the United States, Europe, and Asia. It trades in stocks of 45 countries and is also rapidly increasing its presence in Hong Kong by purchasing more office space. Jane Street was established in 2000 and its annual revenues last year were $20.5 billion. It describes itself on its website as a firm that uses "sophisticated quantitative analysis and a deep understanding of market mechanics" to keep prices consistent and reliable." "We're a firm of puzzle solvers on and off the clock," it says. How does Jane Street operate in India Jane Street operates in India through four group entities, two of which are based in India, with the other two in Hong Kong and Singapore. The firm started its first India unit in December 2020. The other two Asian entities operate as foreign investors registered with India. The scale of its India operations Between January 2023 and March 2025, the four entities cumulatively made a profit of $5 billion by trading in equity options in India, the country's market regulator SEBI said in its order. Jane Street's large India presence first gained prominence last year when the firm sued a rival hedge fund, Millennium Management, accusing it of stealing a valuable in-house trading strategy. At a court hearing in the US, it was revealed that the strategy involved India options and had generated $1 billion in profits for Jane Street in 2023. The two firms settled the case in December. Jane Streets's India challenege India's market regulator says Jane Street as a group first aggressively bought significant quantities of banking stocks and futures, temporarily pushing up the banking index. Later, it aggressively sold large quantities of the same banking stocks and futures. This large scale buying influenced retail investors to invest, leading to market manipulation, SEBI said

Nuvama, Angel One, BSE slide up to 7% after Sebi ban on Jane Street

Shares of India's capital market stocks took a hit on Friday after the market regulator barred US-based quant firm Jane Street from accessing the domestic securities market for allegedly manipulating the markets. To be sure, the direct impact was felt by Jane Street's local trading partner, Nuvama Wealth Management Ltd., whose shares plunged as much as 6.7 per cent, the worst since May 5 this year. Other stocks that saw a sentimental impact were BSE and Angel One, although different triggers also impacted the stocks. BSE's counter fell as much as 6.1 per cent, while Angel One's scrip plunged 7.3 per cent on Friday. Shares of listed depository CDSL fell over 2 per cent during the session. As of 10:00 AM, the counters of Nuvama Wealth and Angel One were down 4.7 per cent and 5.5 per cent, respectively. BSE shares were lower by 3.9 per cent, compared to a 0.02 per cent decline in the benchmark Nifty50 index. Track LIVE Stock Market Updates Here Sebi bans Jane Street after alleged illegal gain The Securities and Exchange Board of India barred Jane Street from accessing the domestic securities market for allegedly manipulating the markets. In an interim order, Sebi has also directed the high-frequency trading outfit to disgorge ₹4,844 crore made 'unlawfully'. Jane Street's modus operandi included building aggressive positions in the options segment and then influencing the price in the underlying stock market, where volumes tend to be relatively low, according to Sebi. The Sebi investigation found that Jane Street accounted for a significant portion of the net buying in the 12 Bank Nifty component stocks and their futures. The 'burst of buying' was intended to influence the price of these securities, which in turn allowed the firm to put on significantly larger and profitable positions in the highly liquid index options segment. As per the Sebi order, between January 2023 and March 2025, Jane Street earned ₹44,358 crore in options, lost ₹7,208 crore in stock futures, lost ₹191 crore in index futures, and another ₹288 crore in cash, pocketing an overall gain of ₹36,671 crore during this period. Angel One F&O option premium turnover falls Angel One reported a year-on-year decline in its futures and options (F&O) segment based on option premium turnover for the quarter ended June 2025 (Q1 FY26). The F&O option premium turnover fell 17.8 per cent to ₹13,500 crore, compared to ₹16,400 crore in the same period last year (Q1 FY25). The decline highlights moderation in the derivatives volumes after Sebi's action to curb retail frenzy. However, overall option premium turnover, which includes all segments, rose 40.0 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to ₹1,048 crore, reflecting increased interest in non-F&O segments and broader market hedging. Angel One also saw a notable slowdown in trading activity during the June 2025 quarter (Q1 FY26), as key operational metrics declined year-on-year. The total number of orders executed on the platform fell 25.8 per cent to 343.11 million, while the average daily orders dropped 27.0 per cent to 5.62 million. Additionally, gross client acquisition declined sharply by 40 per cent Y-o-Y, with the company adding 1.45 million new clients during the quarter.
