Dolphins provide encouraging update on OT who was airlifted to hospital

USA Today24-07-2025
A day after Bayron Matos was airlifted to a local hospital following the Miami Dolphins' first training camp practice, the team offered an encouraging update about the offensive tackle's condition.
"Bayron Matos sustained an injury at the end of Wednesday's practice and was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation and testing," a team statement read. "He has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition. He will remain in the care of doctors for continued observation."
The circumstances that led to Matos being hospitalized haven't been revealed, although one report said that the lineman "suffered loss of feeling to his right side" after a collision.
Matos, 24, joined the Dolphins last year as an undrafted free agent as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. The Dominican Republic-native was a college basketball player at New Mexico and South Florida before walking on to the football team at USF.
The 6'7, 334-pound offensive tackle spent his entire rookie season on the Dolphins' practice squad.

Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw on IR with season-ending shoulder injury and sign TE Steven Stilianos.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have placed cornerback Ennis Rakestraw on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury and signed tight end Steven Stilianos. Detroit made the moves Thursday after coach Dan Campbell lamented that Rakestraw was hurt a year after injuries limited him to eight games as a rookie. 'You hate it for the kid,' Campbell said earlier this week. 'It's not his fault, just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try to get it better and rehab, come back stronger and move on.' Detroit drafted the former Missouri star in the second round last year and his season ended in mid-November after various ailments kept him off the field. Stilianos provides depth at tight end for exhibition games, limiting snaps for starter Sam LaPorta and veteran backups Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra. Rakestraw played when the Lions opened the preseason with a 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Detroit plays the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night in its second of four exhibition games. ___ AP NFL:

Micah Parsons remains in camp despite not attending practice

Micah Parsons didn't show up to watch the Cowboys practice for the first time in training camp. That caused a stir, and the fact that owner Jerry Jones also wasn't at Thursday's practice caused a bigger stir. Alas, there is nothing to see here. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters after practice that Parsons remains in training camp, and two sources told Jane Slater of NFL Media that "nothing is happening" with negotiations behind the scenes. Parsons showed up to training camp on time, but he has not participated in any of the practices as he awaits a contract extension. The sides are in a stalemate, with the Cowboys' season opener four weeks from today. Now that he's in camp, Parsons essentially is stuck. According to the NFL's Constitution and Bylaws, if a player leaves the team during training camp or the regular season, he has five days to return. If he doesn't, the team can place the player on its reserve list as a retired player. And if that happens under those specific circumstances, the player cannot play again that year for any team. His contract would toll. Both sides will have a big decision to make if Parsons isn't under contract before the start of the season. The Cowboys, though, have a recent history of completing contract extensions at the 11th hour, so to speak. Jones said earlier this week that he is "absolutely not" confident Parsons will play in the season opener.

Safety Xavier McKinney could miss rest of camp with calf injury, Packers secondary dealt another setback

Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney didn't participate in practice Thursday because of a calf issue that's been bothering him. He indicated the injury could sideline him the rest of training camp, telling reporters Thursday that he doesn't expect to play in the preseason but will be ready for Week 1. "Obviously glad that we caught it when we caught it, so just kind of trying to take it slow and then the build-up, obviously," McKinney said, according to ESPN. "But I'll be ready when it's time to go, for sure." McKinney explained that the injury had been "lingering" over time. "And that's really all it really was," he said, per ESPN. While McKinney is confident he'll be on the field for the Packers' regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7, his absence in camp won't go unnoticed. He's an instrumental piece of a Green Bay secondary that's already down cornerback Nate Hobbs, who underwent surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his knee and is expected to miss the rest of camp. Hobbs, too, is targeting a Week 1 return. Hobbs was one of the Packers' biggest free agent acquisitions this offseason. Green Bay signed him to a four-year, $48 million deal in March. After spending four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, the University of Illinois product is now a projected starter at outside corner in Green Bay. McKinney, on the other hand, was a splash free agent addition last year. That's when the Packers brought him in on a four-year, $67 million contract. He made good on that deal in 2024, ranking second in the NFL last season with eight interceptions. McKinney, 26, established a leadership role in the back end of a defense coordinated by Jeff Hafley and rounded out the year tied for fourth on the team with 88 total tackles. He led all Packers players last year with 11 passes defended. McKinney previously played for the New York Giants, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft. During his final season with the Giants, McKinney racked up a career-high 116 total tackles. He picked off nine passes in 46 games with the Giants. After dealing with injuries earlier in his career, McKinney has started 17 games each of the past two seasons. He still has a chance to do that in 2025 — that is, if he recovers in time from his current calf issue.
