Revealed: The huge scheduling change being made at NFL HQ after 2025 matchups are released

Daily Mail13-05-2025

Wednesday will mark the release of the NFL's 2025 schedule, but a big change is set to be made at the league's headquarters afterwards.
Howard Katz, the NFL's senior vice president of broadcasting and media operations, has overseen the league's matchup-making for over 20 years.
But after the latest round of matchups come out for all 32 teams, the 75-year-old will be retiring, as he told The Athletic.
Katz, who was recognized by commissioner Roger Goodell at the league's annual meeting this year, will reportedly have his duties assumed by executive vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder.
Katz's team of schedule-makers are said to use 200 to 300 computers to aid their process (a huge increase from the one or two that were used initially).
The computers are input with rules for the schedule to abide by, such as avoiding a three-game road trip, but the decision-making ultimately lies with Katz as he continually repeats the process and makes adjustments.

Katz told The Athletic that he receives a bevvy of personal scheduling requests, asking him to plan around weddings, bar mitzvahs and more.
He also recalled the Pope's visit to Philadelphia in 2015 shaking up the Eagles schedule that year, while concerts in the same city as a team can also affect scheduling.
While the schedule has yet to be released in full, the NFL began releasing details on Monday, announcing that the season would begin with the Super Bowl-champion Eagles hosting the Cowboys.
On Tuesday, the league also released its international slate, which features a record seven games this season.
The Chargers will face a yet-to-be announced team in Sao Paulo, the Vikings will play in Dublin against the Steelers, and then against the Browns next week in London.
There will also be Broncos-Jets and Rams-Jaguars matchups in the English capital, while the Colts and Falcons will play in Berlin.
The Dolphins and Commanders will also play the first NFL game in Madrid on November 16.

Rick Pitino shuts door on New York Knicks return: ‘Absolutely not'

St John's coach Rick Pitino said he has zero interest in becoming head coach of the New York Knicks again. 'Absolutely not,' Pitino said during a broadcast of Wednesday's game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians, per CBS Sports. 'I think whoever comes in, if he doesn't get to the finals, it's going to be deemed an unsuccessful season,' he continued. 'So, whoever comes in has got so much pressure on them to take this team to the next level cause that's why they're doing it, obviously, in their minds.' The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau on Tuesday despite reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. The Knicks haven't reached the NBA finals since 1999 and have not won a championship since 1973. Pitino, 72, compiled a 90-74 record with two playoff appearances in two seasons as the head coach for New York from 1987-89. The Hall of Famer completed his second season as the head coach at St John's in 2024-25, winning national and Big East Coach of the Year honors after finishing 31-5. Thibodeau compiled a 226-174 (.565) record in five seasons with the Knicks, including a 51-31 finish this season. He was 24-23 in the playoffs with New York.

Mets SS Francisco Lindor out of lineup Thursday with broken toe

June 5 - Luisangel Acuna has been penned into the New York Mets' lineup on Thursday afternoon as the starting shortstop against the Los Angeles Dodgers as four-time All-Star Francisco Lindor takes a seat to deal with a broken toe. Lindor was hit by a pitch in the first inning of Wednesday's Mets-Dodgers game, but was helped to his feet and played all nine innings of the Mets' 6-1 victory. Postgame X-rays revealed a broken pinkie toe in his right foot thanks to an errant Tony Gonsolin slider. By sitting at the start of Thursday's game, Lindor will be out of the Mets' leadoff spot for just the second time all season. He missed the 10-4 win against the Miami Marlins on March 31 following the birth of his son, Koa. Lindor said he is working through the pain and will be re-evaluated daily to determine his availability. "It hurts," Lindor said. "And even more so when you are wearing shoes." Lindor is batting .279 with 14 home runs, 36 RBIs and 11 stolen bases this season. Acuna, 23, enters Thursday's game with a .246/.298/.292 slash line and 11 stolen bases in 53 games. He's the younger brother of Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna. --Field Level Media

Aaron Rodgers plans to sign with Pittsburgh Steelers, reports say

For the majority of his two-decade career in the NFL, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was one of the most valuable players. But this offseason, when the 41-year-old was let go by one team, it was unclear who else would want him. The four-time NFL MVP and the league's oldest active player appeared to provide resolution to one of the most intriguing offseason storylines Thursday by agreeing to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent, according to reports from the NFL Network and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Rodgers intends to attend the team's minicamp next week, per the Post-Gazette. It is a union of two sides that need one another. Pittsburgh used both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson last season to moderate success but both options departed earlier this offseason. After a 4-2 record with Fields as the starter, Pittsburgh gave the starting job to Wilson, a Super Bowl champion more than a decade earlier while with Seattle, once the veteran recovered from an injury suffered during training camp. Wilson made an early splash with his ability to throw deep balls but couldn't sustain the offensive progress as the Steelers lost six of their last eight games and their season ended in the playoffs' first round. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since 2017. Rodgers needed a team that would believe he could look like his old self after two highly underwhelming seasons with the New York Jets. Rodgers tore the Achilles' tendon in his first game in 2023 and missed the rest of that season. The Jets cleaned house after going 5-12 last season, a reset that included informing Rodgers on Feb. 13 that he would no longer be a Jet. Rodgers was non-committal about his future as the final weeks of the season, and potentially his career, approached. 'I just need a break to refresh, put my feet in the sand and see where I'm at after that,' Rodgers said Jan. 1. Rodgers was also reportedly considering Minnesota and the New York Giants, but both had pivoted to other plans during the offseason as Rodgers' decision dragged on and he weighed whether he wanted to retire or play in 2025. When he still had not made a choice more than one month after free agency began in March, Rodgers said was "not holding anybody hostage" during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. "I've been straight-up with these teams from the start about where I was at, starting with the money thing," Rodgers said. "I told every single one of the teams I talked to it ain't about the money. I'll play for $10 (million). I never once said I need a multi-year deal." As part of his decision-making process, Rodgers had met with the Steelers in March. Rodgers ranks fifth in NFL history with 503 passing touchdowns and his 62,952 yards rank seventh. Few players in NFL history have reached the highs Rodgers has during a career that has not been without controversy. After sitting his first three seasons as a backup to Brett Favre in Green Bay, Rodgers became the Packers starter in 2008 and within three seasons had won a Super Bowl. Rodgers spent the next decade becoming one of the most-decorated quarterbacks in league history, winning NFL Most Valuable Player honors four times in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021; only Peyton Manning, with five, has won the award more times. At his peak Rodgers possessed the devastating combination of one of the league's strongest arms and pinpoint accuracy. Just 1.4% of his 8,245 career attempts have resulted in an interception, the lowest interception rate in NFL history. Rodgers even had an uncanny ability to connect on Hail Mary throws. His career quarterback rating, a formula created to judge overall quarterback success, also stands an all-time record. His most prolific season came in 2011, when Rodgers threw for 45 touchdowns — three off his single-season career-high from 2020 — against just six interceptions, while amassing a career-high 4,643 yards and averaging a career-high 9.2 yards per attempt. The Packers, however, never returned to the Super Bowl again, and the relationship between the quarterback and the team began to fray in 2020, when Green Bay opted against drafting receivers to instead select quarterback Jordan Love and begin a long-term succession plan reminiscent of Rodgers' own entry into the league that saw him watch and learned behind a Hall of Fame incumbent. By the end of the following season Rodgers, coming off an MVP season, termed his future with the team a 'beautiful mystery.' In recent years, Rodgers has become a lightning rod for his opinions on non-football topics. In 2021, Rodgers left the status of his vaccination against COVID a mystery, only to later test positive for COVID and be fined by the NFL for violating the league's protocols for unvaccinated players. Rodgers has openly discussed his use of the psychedelic ayahuasca, including during his consecutive-MVP seasons of 2020 and 2021. While the NFL was preparing for free agency to begin in 2023, Rodgers went on a retreat in Oregon where he spent four days isolated in darkness. A documentary about Rodgers that was released in the final weeks of the 2024 NFL reason was titled, simply, 'Enigma.' But by then, his time with the Jets appeared unofficially over after two seasons that never lived up to the Super Bowl expectations Rodgers himself set. During his introduction as a Jet in 2023, he said he wanted 'to be part of a team that can win it all.' They never came close.
