Pirates' Paul Skenes faces Rockies, looks to continue torrid stretch

Reuters3 days ago
August 2 - The Pittsburgh Pirates aren't in the postseason hunt, but they do have a reason for optimism every fifth day when Paul Skenes takes the mound.
Skenes (6-8) will take his majors-best 1.83 ERA into hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver on Saturday afternoon when Pittsburgh continues its series against the Colorado Rockies.
Skenes brings a 13-inning scoreless streak into the matchup against Colorado left-hander Austin Gomber (0-5, 6.28) on Saturday.
Skenes will face the Rockies for the first time in his brief career and will try to restore some order for the Pirates, who squandered a 9-0 first-inning lead and lost 17-16 to Colorado on Friday night.
Pittsburgh allowed a season high in runs and hits (22) en route to seeing its five-game winning streak snapped.
The Pirates will aim for their fourth straight series victory. Pittsburgh has won eight of its last 10 games and held opponents to one run or fewer in seven games before Friday night during the stretch.
Skenes has led the way with 14 quality starts and hasn't given up a run since the fourth inning of a loss at Minnesota on July 11. He has thrown six shutout innings in his last two outings -- wins over Arizona and Detroit -- as he gets ready for the August schedule.
"August is tough. Mentally, physically," Skenes said after beating the Diamondbacks 6-0 on Sunday. "I think a lot of July, I've been trying to get ready for that. So [I] just got to keep doing that - keep up my body in good positions and go out there and keep pitching well."
Gomber is tasked with slowing the Pirates, who have 33 runs over the last five games. Gomber is not only looking for his first win of the season, he is trying for his first career victory against Pittsburgh. In nine appearances -- five starts -- against the Pirates, he is 0-3 with a 6.44 ERA.
The Rockies have continued with their youth movement, with 11 players making their major league debut this season, and Warming Bernabel is making his opportunity count. He played his first big-league game in Baltimore last week and has at least one hit in all six games he has played and has homered three times.
His latest blast came Friday night, a three-run shot that gave Colorado hope early in the game. He finished with four hits, collected his first career triple and is batting .458 in 24 at-bats.
It has been a positive in a Rockies season that could set a record for futility. Colorado has 29 wins and needs to finish 13-40 to avoid matching the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the modern-era record for losses with 121.
"I see immediate confidence coming up from the minor leagues," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Friday. "I see smooth. It looks like he knows what he wants, like he's hunting (specific pitches) up there. It looks like he knows what he's doing.
"It's a breath of fresh air to see that coming up from the minor leagues, ready to hit like that."

Rays seek to alter recent road narrative in rematch vs. Angels

August 5 - The Tampa Bay Rays' road woes continued Monday night when they started a two-week, 12-game trip up and down the West Coast with a 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. It was the 11th loss in the last 12 road games for the Rays. Ryan Pepiot (6-9, 3.80 ERA), who is in the midst of a personal slump, will try to lead Tampa Bay on Tuesday night when he opposes fellow right-hander Jose Soriano (7-8, 3.65) in the middle contest of a three-game series. Pepiot is 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA in two career starts against the Angels. He comes in off a 7-4 road loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday in a game that saw him allow a season-high seven runs on six hits, including a three-run homer to Ben Rice and a two-run shot to Giancarlo Stanton, in four innings. It marked his fifth straight start that the Rays lost dating to a 6-5 win over the Athletics on July 2. Soriano is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in six career appearances (three starts) against Tampa Bay. That win came on April 10 after he allowed one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings while striking out four. The Angels, behind a two-run homer from Jo Adell and a solid start by Yusei Kikuchi, leapfrogged Tampa Bay in the American League wild-card standings with Monday's win. Los Angeles now trails both the Yankees and Seattle by five games for the league's final two wild-card spots. Taylor Ward went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Bryce Teodosio also had three hits, stole a base and scored a run Monday for the Angels, who won their second straight game. The victory was rather ho-hum after the Angels rallied from a five-run deficit to post an 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday on Ward's three-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. "You try not to get too high or too low," Los Angeles interim manager Ray Montgomery said. "It's good to get off to a good start in this (series). It's boring, but I like to be boring good." Tampa Bay jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning Monday after Yandy Diaz led off with a double into the right field corner, advanced to third on a single by Ha-Seong Kim, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Junior Caminero. But Kikuchi allowed just two more hits over the next 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven. "The first inning could have gotten away from us there," Montgomery said. "To come away giving up one is pretty impressive." Adrian Houser, making his first start for Tampa Bay since being acquired at the trade deadline from the Chicago White Sox last week, allowed season highs in runs (five) and hits (11) before departing after 5 2/3 innings. "It's been a unique couple days for him, no doubt," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Fly out to the West Coast to make a start with a bunch of new faces that you don't know. But I thought he competed really well." Said Houser: "Obviously, I wanted to go out there and pound the strike zone but wasn't able to do that. Was falling behind and wasn't able to execute pitches when I needed to to help myself out. That's ultimately what got me in trouble tonight." --Field Level Media

Tampa Bay Buccaneers set to sign new quarterback Teddy Bridgewater after Baker Mayfield scare

Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is set to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he makes a shock return to the NFL. The 32-year-old spent last season working as a high school coach at Miami Northwestern. But according to reports, Bridgewater is returning to the NFL and is meeting with the Bucs on Tuesday. It comes just days after Baker Mayfield suffered a worrying injury scare in practice. The starter sustained a contusion on his throwing hand on Thursday, while Mayfield's backup Michael Pratt has been dealing with a back problem.

Rangers, Nathan Eovaldi seek to keep Yankees in slump

August 5 - Nathan Eovaldi, the American League pitcher of the month for July, will take the ball for the Texas Rangers when they clash with the New York Yankees on Tuesday night in the second contest of a three-game set in Arlington, Texas. Rookie Will Warren (6-5, 4.64 ERA) will start for the Yankees in a battle of right-handers. The Rangers captured the series opener on Monday, beating the Yankees 8-5 when Josh Jung ripped a two-out, three-run homer in the 10th inning. Texas has won two of its past three games while the Yankees have dropped four straight. Eovaldi (9-3, 1.49 ERA) won all five of his starts in July while lowering his ERA from 1.87 to 1.49. He allowed just three runs (two earned) and struck out 30 batters in 30 2/3 innings, amassing a minuscule 0.59 ERA and ending the month with his 100th career victory with a win over the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday. "(Eovaldi) is so competitive," Texas manager Bruce Bochy said of the 35-year-old. "He has that intestinal fortitude that you love and that maniacal focus, man. Every pitch, he keeps his poise out there. He gets in a jam, he just gets better. That's what good pitchers do -- great pitchers --- and I consider him a great pitcher." Eovaldi hasn't lost a decision since May 22, when he allowed just one run on five hits and a walk over six innings in a 1-0 loss to the Yankees in New York. That setback dropped him to 5-6 in 23 appearances (20 starts) versus the Yankees, with an ERA of 3.44 in 117 2/3 innings. Eovaldi has struck out 108 Yankees' batters in his career, his most against any team. Warren, 26, has been solid if not outstanding, making 23 starts for the Bronx Bombers in 2025 after going 0-3 in 22 2/3 innings as a late-season call-up last year. He went 1-1 in six starts last month and has not recorded a decision since a home loss to the Cubs on July 13, with three no-decisions since. Warren's most recent start was on Wednesday versus Tampa Bay at home when he gave up one run on six hits and a walk over six innings in a game the Yankees won 5-4 in 11 innings. At 110 2/3 innings for the year, he's approaching his career high of the 132 1/3 he amassed last year in the combined stints at Triple-A and for the Yankees. "I think I've gotten into a good routine of how to bounce back every five [days] instead of seven like you do in the minor leagues," Warren explained. "Last year I never really got my feet solid in the ground and could bounce back if I had a bad one. The difference this year is just the ability to bounce back. I feel good, I feel strong. Just taking it one week at a time." Warren has one career outing against the Rangers, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and a walk and striking out 10 in a 5-2 victory over Texas on May 20 in the Bronx. --Field Level Media
