Carnegie Mellon Qatar honors 186 students for academic excellence
Doha, Qatar – Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q), a Qatar Foundation (QF) partner university, recently honored 186 students for remarkable grades achieved in the fall 2024 semester. Within this cohort were 38 first-years, 39 sophomores, 51 juniors, and 58 seniors.
The CMU-Q Dean's List ceremony takes place twice a year to celebrate academic achievements by students in the previous semester. The dean of CMU-Q, Michael Trick, reflected on these accomplishments and the significance of this commemoration.
'Gathering together the CMU-Q community to celebrate these academic milestones is always a highlight of the semester,' he said. 'This ceremony honors the hard work of our students, and encourages continued excellence for the remainder of their studies and beyond.'

QF's Earthna Summit 2025 concludes with strengthened foundations for future collaboration
Doha, Qatar: The Earthna Summit 2025, organized by Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, a member of Qatar Foundation, concluded today after two transformative days of cross-sector collaboration, bold ideas, and inclusive dialogue under the theme 'Building Our Legacy: Sustainability, Innovation, and Traditional Knowledge'. The Summit drew more than 2,000 attendees, further solidifying Earthna's role as a leading convenor for sustainability innovation in hot and arid regions. Day two opened with a session titled 'Women Leading Collaboration: Partnerships for Sustainable Development', which emphasized the crucial role women play in advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for the Goals. The panel brought together leaders from government, diplomacy, and the development sector, focusing on how inclusive leadership is shaping effective partnerships, new financing models, and policies, to accelerate global sustainability efforts. 'It is time to support their leadership with the tools and resources they need, and to walk alongside them in shaping a more collaborative and equitable future. The moment to act together is not coming: it is already here,' said H.E. Ambassador Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and founding partner and CEO of onepoint5. 'Change does not happen in isolation. It happens when we invest, innovate, and generate impact together.' Her Excellency Dr. Hamda Al-Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, also spoke during the session, underlining the importance of advancing SDG 17. 'It is the voices, vision, and values of women that are forging the most resilient and transformative pathways toward a more sustainable and equitable world,' she remarked. Curated networking was also a major focus, paving the way for high-level panels later in the day that addressed pressing environmental challenges—from sustainability frameworks beyond GDP to the role of faith-based approaches in advancing environmental stewardship. Another highlight of the Summit was the plenary session on the Arid Cities Network, where leaders advanced plans for a groundbreaking alliance aimed at facilitating knowledge sharing of climate solutions for arid urban centers. 'What I've witnessed here is more than a summit—it's a movement,' said Rafael López Aliaga, Mayor of Lima. 'Over the past two days, I've had the honor of reconnecting with peers and engaging with inspiring individuals from across sectors and around the world. Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar earns first FEE EcoCampus Green Flag designation in the MENA region
Doha, Qatar – Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) has been awarded the prestigious FEE EcoCampus Green Flag designation, becoming the first university in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to achieve this recognition. CMU-Q is a Qatar Foundation partner university. "We are thrilled to be the first university in the MENA region to receive the FEE EcoCampus Green Flag," said Michael Trick, dean of CMU-Q. "For the last four years, our entire campus community—faculty, staff, and students—have embraced positive change and worked together to make CMU-Q a model for environmental stewardship." Based in Denmark, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is one of the world's largest environmental education organizations, with over 100 member organizations in 81 countries. The EcoCampus program empowers students to lead sustainable change, bring awareness to their peers, and encourage operational efficiency at their campuses. CMU-Q embarked on its ambitious EcoCampus journey in September 2020 under the leadership of Chadi Aoun, teaching professor of information systems, and the guidance of Ruba Hinnawi, technical lead at Qatar Foundation's Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, the national operator for EcoCampus. A committee of students, faculty and staff created a comprehensive plan to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into all aspects of campus life. 'This has been a long, collaborative effort between CMU-Q and Earthna to transform a campus and create a blueprint for other universities to get their own Green Flag designation,' said Ruba Hinnawi, who attended the audit and the announcement at CMU-Q. 'It is very meaningful that we achieved this within Qatar Foundation, where we are leading the charge to create a coordinated approach to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.' In 2022, Jennifer Bruder, associate dean of research, and Elissar El-Akra Hajjar, director of facilities, became co-directors of the EcoCampus initiative. They mobilized a large community effort to transform the campus, focusing on three key areas: food equity, climate change, and campus waste management. To receive the designation, Pramod Kumar Sharma, senior director of education for the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), traveled to Qatar to audit the campus. 'I'm happy to have our first EcoCampus Green Flag in the MENA region. Higher education is important in building a more sustainable future, because students at university can bring about a big change in a very short time,' he said. 'Some people call students 'future leaders,' but I say they are leaders now. They see sustainability as a value, not an action, and they will take this value to the workplace when they begin their careers.' For Jennifer Bruder, the FEE Green Flag is simply a milestone in CMU-Q's sustainability journey. 'This is an exciting time for our campus, because we see how dedicated our community is to promoting and advancing the UN SDGs at CMU-Q,' she said. 'Over the next many years, I look forward to seeing the new ways CMU-Q can embrace these goals and inspire change in the world.'
