BJP, Trinamool wage war of words over West Bengal's revised OBC list

The Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) engaged in a bitter war of words on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) over a new list of other backward class (OBC) communities in West Bengal.

This comes a day after the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on the State government's notification of a new OBC list. In May 2024, the High Court had cancelled OBC reservations awarded to 77 categories, citing a lack of legislative policy within the 2012 scheme to classify any group as OBC. In June this year, the State government tabled a revised list.
The Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, along with BJP MLAs, distributed sweets outside the State Legislative Assembly premises in Kolkata on Wednesday, chanting slogans such as: 'OBC bill atke gelo (OBC bill got stayed)', and 'Muslim-der OBC korte parlo na (They could not classify Muslims as OBCs)'.
'Snatching rights of Hindu OBCs'
'One of the reasons why [West Bengal Chief Minister] Mamata Banerjee looks so disturbed today is yesterday's stay order on the OBC list. She knows that 17% of Hindu OBCs have been left out. She tried to snatch their rights. On the other hand, she tried to fool nearly two crore Muslims. She thought she could give them OBC certificates like a 'lollipop' when she could not give them employment, education, and healthcare,' Mr. Adhikari said.
He added that the Chief Minister has 'spelt doom' for the 'hard-working Muslims who had dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, or civil servants as general category applicants.'
'Cannot erase history'
Later in the day, Ms. Banerjee accused the BJP and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of not wanting the OBC Bill to pass.
'This is for poor people, for the socially and economically backward class. We want reservations to stay for the Scheduled Castes and tribal people. But how can we snatch the rights of the 33% of people who have been here since Partition? Do you not want to help build them as people? 60 castes in the list were non-Muslims. You people burn up when you see Muslims… How can we erase history?' Ms. Banerjee asked.
List prepared by OBC Commission
She added that the Calcutta High Court's order is an interim stay and not a judgment, and that the government's legal team is studying it.
'The government did not prepare the list; it was prepared by the OBC [Commission]. A former senior justice of the Calcutta High Court is part of that. We had done everything to adhere to the High Court's rules,' the Chief Minister claimed.
The West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes was constituted in 1993 to 'examine requests for inclusion of any class of citizens as a backward class in the lists and hear complaints of over-inclusion or under-inclusion of any backward class in such lists,' according to its website.

BJP, Akali Dal allege ruling party distributed freebies, money ahead of Ludhiana West bypoll

Ludhiana: A day before the voting for the Ludhiana West bypoll, the Bharatiya Janata Party held a press conference on Wednesday, where they appealed to the public to go and vote without any fear of the administration and police. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state general secretary of BJP, Anil Sarin, while addressing the press conference, alleged that the ruling party is bent on winning this seat at any cost so that AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal could reach the Rajya Sabha. Sarin, while addressing the press conference, claimed that the election commission is responsible for free and fair elections and it is not allowed for any candidate or party to lure or threaten the voters. He said it is sad indeed to see that the govt is trying every possible effort to lure the voter. Sarin claimed that the ruling party is sensing its defeat in the election and that is why they are distributing ration, school bags, stationery, suits, sarees, electronics material, liquor, and money among the voters. He questioned when the govt claimed that they worked hard in the past 3.5 years, then what is the need to adopt such tactics. While taking a dig at CM Bhagwant Mann, he said CM Bhagwant Mann knows they are going to lose this seat, so he already left the ground in advance. He said many cases surfaced where anti-social elements are made to join the party and unwanted people are given police cover. Why are all these things happening? The district administration is responsible for free and fair elections, but it appears that officials are also being threatened, and illegal activities are being conducted by them. The AAP is doing this on a large scale, and the district administration will have to stop this immediately. Cops are advised to do their jobs judiciously and, instead of becoming agents of AAP, they should control illegal activities. He further requested the ECI to take strict action against these illegal activities, and action should be taken against the party adopting such tactics. BJP demands ECI should take note of these activities, and they raised the matter with ECI already, and they are hopeful action will be taken against the erring persons. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BJP state general secretary Anil Sarin, district president Rajnish Dhiman, media panellist Dr Kamaljit Soi, Narinder Malhi, and press secretary Dr Satish Kumar were present at the press conference. Ghumman alleged distribution of money by AAP The Shiromani Akali Dal candidate, advocate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, alleged that the ruling party was distributing money and other items to the voters. He was seen arguing with AAP councillor Sunny Master for the alleged distribution of things to the voters. He advised him not to support Delhi AAP leaders because Delhi people are not going to stay here; only Punjabis are to stay in Punjab.

CM: Bengal will not observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'

1 2 3 Kolkata: Bengal govt will not observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25, CM Mamata Banerjee has said, calling a central directive in this regard a mockery of the Constitution and democracy. The Union ministry of culture has in a letter asked the administration to organise events to be led by the governor or CM to mark 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25, which also marks the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency. "The intent is politically motivated. I condemn the term 'murder of Constitution'. Constitution is the very foundation of our democratic system, our rights, everything we stand for. How can they say that Constitution has been murdered? I object to this," the CM said. She added, "You may have your political differences with Rahul Gandhi, the leader of opposition. You may or may not like him. But there are other political parties. Many of them were not even there during the Emergency. Did you consult them?"Accusing the Centre, instead, of "murdering democracy", Banerjee said, "Every day, democracy is being murdered, fundamental rights are being curtailed, state economies are being bulldozed. You are forcefully imposing your fabricated religious ideologies on people and pursuing your own toppled elected govts in Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist Says "Throw Away Your Regular Bedsheets Right Now, Here's Why" Miracle Sheets Learn More Undo You even approached the SC seeking President's Rule in Bengal. You should be ashamed." Alleging that all four pillars of democracy were under threat, Banerjee asked, "Which one have you left untouched? Even the Election Commission has become entirely biased." She added that the Centre's letter to the chief secretary mentioning "constitutional morality" was unbecoming. "Who is talking about constitutional morality? Those who do not respect the Constitution?" Taking a swipe at PM Narendra Modi, she said, "The PM is always abroad. Who is the PM, Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? Modiji travels the world while Amit Shah handles everything. If that's the case, why not officially declare Amit Shah as Prime Minister? It appears that he is running the country. You are using governors for political ends. Letters are being drafted and sent from the MHA through them. There is no adherence to any system. You play with people's dignity." Questioning the Centre for choosing a pre-Independence date to celebrate Bengal Foundation Day, the CM said the state assembly had passed a resolution declaring Poila Baisakh as Bangla Diwas. "On June 20, 1947, when India was not yet independent, a law was passed stating that Bengal would remain with India and Bangladesh with Pakistan. Why should we accept that date? India became independent on Aug 15. Shouldn't Bengalis decide Bengal's foundation day? Will you decide everything?" She alleged that Centre was repeatedly stonewalling attempts to rename West Bengal as Bengal. In a reference to the violence at Maheshtala recently, the CM said, "A fruit vendor went home to celebrate a festival. And you planted a holy tulsi plant there. We offer tulsi to Lord Jagannath and Sri Krishna. If you wanted to plant tulsi, why didn't you do so in your own house? I am telling everyone indulging in mean politics that this is injustice and an insult to our gods. People have the right to follow their religion…So many people go to their ancestral homes during Durga Puja. Can we occupy their houses? What are you teaching people?"

Gujarat: Bypolls In Visavadar, Kadi Assembly Constituencies To Be Held Today

Ahmedabad: Bypolls to the Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats in Gujarat will be held on Thursday, where the BJP, Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have put up their candidates. Votes will be counted on June 23. Eligible voters will be allowed to cast their ballots between 7 am and 8 pm, election officials said on Wednesday. The state government has declared a public holiday in both constituencies on the voting day, said the office of Gujarat's Chief Electoral Officer. It said votes would be cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 294 polling stations in each constituency. The Visavadar seat in Junagadh district has been lying vacant since December 2023, after the then AAP legislator Bhupendra Bhayani resigned and joined the ruling BJP. While the BJP has nominated Kirit Patel for the bypoll in Visavadar, Congress has fielded Nitin Ranpariya. AAP's former Gujarat president Gopal Italia is also in the fray. Despite its near-total dominance in the state, the BJP hasn't won the Vasavadar seat since 2007. Party leaders said they are hopeful of overcoming the 18-year jinx here. In the last assembly election in 2022, AAP's Bhupendra Bhayani had defeated BJP's Harshad Ribadiya, a Congress turncoat and former MLA, by 7,063 votes. The Kadi seat in Mehsana district, a constituency reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, has been lying vacant since February 4, following the death of BJP MLA Karsan Solanki. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Chavda from Kadi, while Congress has given the ticket to Ramesh Chavda, a former MLA. Ramesh Chavda had won the seat in 2012, but lost it to BJP's Karsanbhai Solanki in 2017. Like the Visavadar, the Kadi seat will also witness a three-way fight, with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP fielding Jagdish Chavda. In the 182-member Gujarat assembly, the BJP has 161 legislators, Congress 12 and AAP four. While one seat is with the Samajwadi Party, two are with independents.
