Mother Sippy: Fairview grows Regional Revival series
Ah, Bordeaux, the most renowned of French wine regions. The Left Bank. The Right Bank. Cabernet, merlot and white wine blends that will make you weep with joy. Prices that will turn those tears into sadness.
Happily, Fairview rides to the rescue with the latest addition to their innovative Regional Revival series: Fairview's homage to the classic wine regions of Europe, reimagined through a distinctly South African lens.
Each wine in the series draws inspiration from Old World styles and grapes, but adds a distinct local character. This year, it's the turn of Bordeaux, with the release of the Altesse 2024, a crisp white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon—the classic combination for a 'Bordeaux White'.
Inspired by the sea breezes and high-altitude vineyards of Darling, and modelled on classic Bordeaux whites, this is a wine where terroir does all the talking.
The name Altesse is a tip of the hat to the two key aspects of the terroir that shape the wine: altitude and sea. With grapes harvested from vineyards near Darling, the vines on the hills above Yzerfontein soak up cool Atlantic breezes and enjoy long ripening days. The result? A vibrant, lime-zesty white with a whisper of salinity and a generous seam of Sémillon texture.
'It's a Darling revival,' says Fairview's Charles Back. 'A wine rooted in French tradition but unmistakably Cape in personality.'
Likewise, the label, styled as a vintage postage stamp, features a lighthouse standing watch over waves and vines and is a tribute to the region's maritime climate and coastal beauty while reminding drinkers of the wine's deep sense of place.
And aside from being Fairview's first take on Bordeaux, it's also the first white in the acclaimed Regional Revival range.
Take the Homtini 2022, a blend in the style of the 'Super Tuscan' wines, without the super-spendy prices. Here, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz come together in tribute to the winding Homtini Pass near Knysna, which was once home to the Italian ancestors of winemaker Anthony de Jager. Their dreams of silk farming were dashed, but they found their fortune in winemaking. In the glass, expect ripe cherry, spice, and structure with plenty of Italian flair.
From Tuscany to Rioja, the Extraño 2021 is all about expressing Spanish passion with a gutsy blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, Shiraz, and Cinsault. The name – meaning 'stranger' in Spanish – pays tribute to Tempranillo's outsider status in the Cape, even if this punchy red grape is now firmly at home in Fairview's vineyards. The wine is dark and brooding, bursting with plum, spice, and swagger, making it perfect for pairing with tapas or grilled meats. Someone light the braai already!
Extraño is 'Spanish temperament in a red wine glass!' says cellarmaster Anthony de Jager. 'This red will pack a punch … Arriba! Arriba! Bring out those castanets!'
Finally, there's the Caldera 2022, perhaps my favourite in the range. This is Fairview's nod to the southern Rhône, a region of France just below the foodie city of Lyon, where some of the world's finest Syrah is crafted in the steep hills tumbling down to the river below.
Caldera is one of the Cape's first 'GSM' blends – Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre, plus a dash of Cinsault – and is also a fine fit for a South African braai as much as it is for a hearty Lyonnaise ouefs en meurette (eggs in red wine). But leave the French behind and don't take this wine too seriously, even if it did bag a five-star rating from the Platter's guide twice in the last five years. Cheers to that!

Saturday Kitchen halted as celebrity chef calls in
This week's edition of Saturday Kitchen descended into chaos when a huge name from the culinary world called in Saturday Kitchen halted its usual proceedings today (Saturday, 5th July) when a major celebrity chef called into the show. Following a segment with Rick Stein in Lancashire, the show returned to presenter Matt Tebbutt in the studio after rustling up a carbonara with Gennaro Contaldo. However, before moving onto Matt's interview with Fleur East, the current star of Tina – The Tina Turner Musical, Gennaro interrupted the show to take a phone call. He revealed none other than Jamie Oliver was on the phone, causing an eruption of laughter from the rest of the guests. Jamie, the beloved chef, TV presenter and restaurant owner, exclaimed 'Hello everyone!' down the line as the Saturday Kitchen stars all applauded. The phone call continued with Jamie revealing his Saturday morning plans and promising to tune into the show soon. "Just come back from the market," he shared. "I'm going to be home in two minutes and I'm going to turn the TV on." Matt's guests this week, which also included Clare Smyth, wine expert Helen McGinn and chocolatier Paul A. Young, all let out an "Aww". BBC presenter Matt then quipped: "Jamie's just been down the market, he actually lives that life. "He goes down the market, buys his stuff, then goes home on his little scooter." As Gennaro told Jamie, "I love you and miss you!", Matt swiftly moved on to the next segment to prevent any more disruption. Italian chef Gennaro is a firm fan-favourite of the show and many viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise him for another classic Saturday Kitchen appearance. "Gennaro is the GREATEST!!" one user exclaimed. "I had the honour and privilege to get to know him years ago during the opens of all the Jamie's Italians. "His passion and love is second to one. Plus his food is always perfection." And another fan declared: "27 minutes in and this is already a vintage #SaturdayKitchen. Gennaro putting in an all-timer performance - but you come to expect the best from Matt and co." Saturday Kitchen airs Saturdays from 10am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Kate's summer holiday plans - and they're major change for William
The summer holidays have officially started for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - and royal expert Jennie Bond has revealed what the Prince and Princess of Wales might have in store for them during their break With the summer in full swing, the royals can finally look forward to their annual break. And the holidays have started even sooner for the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales, who have officially come to the end of another school year. Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven-year-old Prince Louis are now on their summer break from Lambrook School before heading back to class in September. Their parents William and Kate will likely have some fun plans in store for their children - but before that, they both have a huge royal duty to carry out. Next week will see them officially welcome French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte to the UK and take part in their glittering state visit. But once that huge duty is over, they can start to look towards their holidays - and royal expert Jennie Bond believes the break will be very different to the ones William used to enjoy when he was younger. The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror: "The truth is that school holidays are ringfenced as private time for the Prince and Princess of Wales and their young family. And, these days, that means that their plans remain confidential and they are pretty much left alone. "It's a massive change from the days when William was a boy. Back then, the paparazzi regarded Diana, William and Harry as public property, no matter where they were. Thankfully, after the death of the Princess, things changed. And that must be a huge relief to the Waleses. "That's not to say William will disappear from public duties – there's the incoming State Visit from President Macron, for example, and I'm sure there will be a handful of other engagements which he will take on. Catherine will devote herself largely to looking after the children, but we may see her at events like Wimbledon and the State Visit." It's likely the Wales family will be keen to get away from their Windsor home, Adelaide Cottage and decamp to Norfolk, where they can immerse themselves in nature. Just this week Kate, who spoke about her 'rollercoaster' recovery from cancer treatment and its life-changing impact, visited a wellbeing garden at a hospital to highlight the environment's healing powers. And Jennie believes the whole family loves the great outdoors. She explained: "The family is likely to be based at their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, for most of the long summer break. They love the wide open spaces there, the freedom they have to explore the Sandringham estate and also to play, pretty unhindered, on the beaches. "The Sandringham farm offers an opportunity for all sorts of fun for the children: tractors to watch, animals to feed and fruit to pick. The family is also very fond of the Scilly Isles and I wouldn't be surprised if they spent a week or two there." But while any location for a holiday would remain private, Jennie says there is definitely one destination they will be paying a visit to this summer - Balmoral. Each year, the royals head up to the Scottish Highlands estate to enjoy quality family time together with the King and Queen, enjoying picnics, barbecues and long walks. And Jennie added: "They will almost certainly head north of the border for a week sometime in August when the King and Queen will be in residence at Balmoral. "It's a long-standing tradition that the family gather in Scotland to catch their breath, enjoy the peace of the countryside and just have fun being together."
