How to throw the perfect dinner party this summer - according to an expert
The traditional three-course dinner party is falling out of favour, with party hosts now choosing grazing boards, DIY desserts, and bespoke beverages to make their summer gatherings stand out. Some are even going above and beyond to make sure their setups are Instagram-worthy.
The poll of 1,000 adults found a staggering eight in ten feel the pressure to make their parties stand out, whether that is through visually stunning dishes, creative decorations, or unique non-alcoholic concoctions. It revealed that 11% of hosts will spend over eight hours - longer than a typical workday - planning their social events to make sure they are perfect.
To help you level up your hosting this summer, Matilda Bea, renowned for her knack for creative hosting, has partnered with Cawston Press to share her top tips for sprucing up summer dinner parties, picnics, and BBQs.
"I always try to add a personal and playful touch to my gatherings - whether that's through handmade menus, thoughtful place cards, or even personalised cocktails to make guests feel extra special," she commented.
"These days, I find that it's about so much more than just the food. It's the atmosphere, the details, and those great conversations around the table that really make a moment catching up with friends and family so memorable."
And while 31% are content to order their food in to save on the hassle of planning a meal, over half see cooking as an essential part of the experience.
Interestingly, text invites are the new norm, with a whopping 73% of party planners swapping paper invitations for SMS invites.
However, over half of hosts now put sustainability at the heart of their event organising, with one in 10 fully committed to eco-friendly products that let their guests enjoy the party guilt-free.
Steve Kearns, Managing Director at Cawston Press, which commissioned the study to mark the launch of its new Sparkling Can Multipacks commented: "People are putting more thought than ever into their dinner parties.
"Many people - especially those who are younger - rarely eat a meal out without taking a photo, so the mise-en-scene has to be as spot-on as the food on the plate. And now, just as importantly, it should reflect the growing desire for more sustainable choices at the table."
MATILDA BEA'S TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HOSTING:
DIY COCKTAILS & MOCKTAILS:
I always make sure there's something for everyone. A DIY cocktail station is a favourite of mine. I've even turned my sink into a makeshift bar, filled with ice - it's a fun photo moment and adds to the 'occasion'.
NIBBLES STATION:
If food isn't the star of the show, I love setting up a drinks and nibbles station - a grazing table on a coffee table or ottoman works wonders.
TABLESCAPING:
A well-styled tablescape is key for me. I love mixing materials for my tablescape - soft linens, colourful table mats, and ceramic serve ware layered together to create a personal and beautiful dining experience.
PERSONAL TOUCHES:
Whether it's personalised place names, hand-painted stationery, or bespoke gift bags, thoughtful details add a personal touch and make your guests feel truly special. Handmade menus or personalised gift bags can be budget-friendly, yet instantly set the tone and create a unique, memorable experience.
GIVE YOUR DINNER PARTY A THEME:
A theme adds a whole new layer of fun to the evening. Whether it's centred around a drink of the evening, the cuisine you're serving, or a seasonal touch, a theme helps set the tone and gives your guests something to vibe with. It's the little details that tie everything together.
INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES:
A dinner party is the perfect opportunity to get everyone involved. I love creating interactive activities like DIY cocktail bars or pizza-making to keep guests engaged and create an easygoing, fun vibe.

Liverpool near mega Alexander Isak agreement
Liverpool are now nearing a mega agreement for Alexander Isak. In another world the Swede would already be playing for the Reds. If it would not have been for Newcastle's incompetence in the transfer market this summer, Isak would be lining up for Liverpool. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the goalkeeper range today LFC x adidas Shop the new adidas range today! But of course, the Reds have also had the chance to sign him in the past. Notably in 2022 the recruitment team pushed to bring him in over Darwin Nunez, but in the end the Uruguayan was chosen. Before that, Liverpool had followed Isak's career closely at AIK and wanted to sign him but he chose Borussia Dortmund. So this pursuit continues. Though at last it seems like it's finally coming to an end. Liverpool are getting closer and closer to getting their man. A report from Spain backs this up. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range According to AS reporter Eduardo Burgos on X, Newcastle are anticipating a mega second bid worth £130m from Liverpool. In his report he claims that an 'agreement will be reached for €150 million (£130 million)' which is exactly the bid that they are expecting from the Reds. In the report, it's also added that Liverpool are confident that the deal will go through. So based on that, it seems like Isak is closing in on a move to Liverpool and the agreement between the two parties is not very far away now. And what a deal this would be. £130m is an incredible amount to pay for one player. It's going to be the British transfer record, surpassing Enzo Fernandez's and Moises Caicedo's transfer to Chelsea.

Bristol sign Wales wing Rees-Zammit after NFL dream ends
Bristol have signed Louis Rees-Zammit following his return to rugby union after the Wales wing gave up on his bid to break into the NFL. English Premiership side Bristol said Thursday that Rees-Zammit was joining with "immediate effect" ahead of the new league season. The 24-year-old has scored 14 tries in 32 Tests for Wales and was selected for the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa. Cubs call up top prospect Owen Caissie, who got robbed of an extra-base hit in his first at-bat
Though the Chicago Cubs have fallen behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, Chicago remains one of the best teams in baseball. The team sits at 68-51 entering Thursday and holds the top wild-card spot in the NL. But after running out one of the best offenses in baseball during the entire first half, the Cubs are scuffling at the plate. The team's 96 wRC+ — an advanced stat which measures offensive performance — ranks just 21st over the past 30 days. The team's entire outfield, in particular, is a big reason for that regression in August. Help is on the way, though. With the team struggling at the plate, the Cubs called up top prospect Owen Caissie ahead of Thursday's game, the team confirmed. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] It's unclear where Caissie will play considering the Cubs usually rely on Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ and Kyle Tucker as their starting outfield, with Seiya Suzuki serving as the team's regular designated hitter. For at least one game, however, Caissie will take Suzuki's spot. The rookie served as the team's designated hitter and batted fifth in his major-league debut. Both Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong were out of the lineup Thursday, though neither player is injured. They were likely just getting extra rest after recent slumps. Caissie will make his major-league debut in his home country. Caissie was born in Burlington, Canada, and the Cubs are finishing up a series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday. Caissie may have been called up Thursday so he could make his major-league debut in front of friends and family in Canada. Burlington is a little over an hour drive from Toronto. Unfortunately for Caissie, Blue Jays outfielder Davis Schneider didn't care about any of that. Caissie looked to have an extra-base hit in his first major-league at-bat, but was robbed of it after a diving catch by Schneider in left field. While Caissie has shown strong power potential and posted excellent walk rates, strikeouts remain an issue for the slugger. Despite his success this season, Caissie is striking out in 28 percent of his plate appearances, a troublesome total for a minor-league player. Swing and miss issues have always been a promise for Caissie, but they haven't stopped him from appearing on top of prospect lists. Baseball Prospectus has listed Caissie on its top-101 prospect list for four straight years. Both Baseball America and ranked Caissie on their own lists the past two years. As expected, Caissie took the roster spot of catcher Miguel Amaya, who returned to action from an injury Wednesday, but needed to be carted off the field due to a left ankle injury. It's unclear how the Cubs plan to utilize Caissie and the rest of the team's outfielders the rest of the way. But with the team's postseason hopes looking strong, working Caissie in sporadically and letting him acclimate to the majors now could pay dividends if the rookie can play his way onto the postseason roster in October.
