The only MP I have ever really wanted to marry is Thangam Debbonaire. The former Labour MP for Bristol West and I have little in common. But it has sometimes been a desire of mine to marry her and take her surname, so becoming Mr Debbonaire. Marital relations would doubtless be fraught, but on the plus side there would be the thrill of friends being able to say things like 'Darling, you know the Debbonaires are coming for dinner?' Which would more than make up for it.
Since being booted out by the voters at last year's general election, Debbonaire has been elevated to the House of Lords, where she still attracts my attention. In an interview on the BBC's Newsnight at the end of last month, shewas so fantastically aloof towards the concerns of the public – and any viewers – that it seemed becoming Baroness Debbonaire had rather gone to her head. As indeed it would to mine.
Anyhow, the noble Baroness was back in the news in a small way this week when she used the Edinburgh book festival to call for the removal of the statue of Clive of India from its magnificent position outside the Foreign Office. Clive appears to be guilty of that most common of modern crimes: being found to have lived in the past. As a result, he can now be added to the 'Wanted' list of statuary which, by my reckoning, has in recent years included almost every figure honoured in Trafalgar Square and indeed everywhere else in the country.
Debbonaire must know where this type of talk can lead. She was an MP for Bristol when the locals of that city – and a few outsiders – decided to take things into their own hands and tear down the statue of the local slaver and philanthropist Edward Colston.
You get the strong impression from such people that if they had their way they would follow the example of American cities such as Portland, Oregon and Richmond, Virginia. After the great outburst of iconoclasm during the past decade, Portland has become a terrific city to visit if you have a deep interest in empty plinths. Monument Avenue in Richmond now has only one monument on it – a statue of the late tennis player Arthur Ashe. That was erected in 1996, but doubtless it too could come down some day, not least because it gives off the unfortunate impression that the child kneeling at Ashe's feet is about to be harshly beaten by him with his raised tennis racket.
Those who call for the removal of historical monuments always do so for the same reason: the figures being honoured should not be honoured because they did something dishonourable. The people telling us this insist that we should teach a different version of our history. When pressed, they generate a distinct suspicion that the version of our history they would like us all to imbibe is their own version.
Nonetheless, they are winning the argument. A YouGov poll published earlier this year found that young Britons are the group most likely to take a negative attitude towards the British Empire as a whole. Indeed they were the only cohort of voters whose most common answer regarding their attitude was that the Empire should be 'a source of shame'. This, incidentally, was an increase of almost 10 per cent since the question was asked just six years ago.
So Baroness Debbonaire and others should probably be happier than they are. They are getting their way. But I do wonder what sort of people will be created in this new iconoclastic era. Personally, I prefer the sort that we used to produce. I used some downtime this week to read the recently published diaries of Peter Kemmis Betty (Half a Banana, Charlcombe Books). Kemmis Betty was a Gurkha officer imprisoned in the Japanese Changi prisoner-of-war camp between 1942 and 1945. Having written and kept the diaries at considerable risk to himself, he relates plenty of the horrors that he and his fellow prisoners went through – including their discovery of what had happened to their fellow PoWs a little way up the road on the Burma railway.
The thing that really stands out about the diaries are the accounts of how the British prisoners manage to get through their time in the camp. They arrange a series of talks to keep each other entertained and educated. They set up a choir. They put on theatrical productions of plays by George Bernard Shaw and Noël Coward. One inmate, who was previously a violinist in the London Philharmonic, gives a performance of Beet-hoven's Violin Concerto in D.
The days are long and the suffering terrible. The prisoners try to supplement their food by arranging a system of gardening. Makeshift sheds in the camp are used as chapels, with one padre internee saying afterwards how many of the PoWs stated it was 'the sacraments and services of their churches which kept them sane, when everything men hold dear was lost'.
If the phrase 'mustn't grumble' could be summed up in a diary, it is here. But it got me thinking again about those attitudes, manners and characteristics we used to take for granted as being distinctly British. They are the sort of traits that some of us grew up with. And it seems to me that they are among the less tangible things to be lost when you wage war on everything in your past so gleefully.
The eagerness to condemn our past seems particularly acute at the moment. Yet all attempts to replace that past are so thin that nobody can even define them except in the most anodyne and meaningless fashion. Britishness is now said to be about kindness and tolerance. Fine things, but they only get you so far. The question of whether they would get us through the sort of trials our forebears went through is a question I suppose only time will answer.

In 2009 I drove there with humanitarian aid collected by Scottish Muslim, Jewish and Christian faith groups, after up to 1400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis died when Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert – recently invited onto British TV news programmes as a 'moderate' – breached a six-month ceasefire by ordering the killing of seven Hamas fighters. The BBC still has its own freelancers sending footage of the slaughter of starving Palestinians in food queues, but surely they too are in mortal peril. I have called on my union, the National Union of Journalists, to demand that the Foreign Minister David Lammy summon the Israeli ambassador Tzipi Hotovely for a formal British diplomatic protest. Many of my former BBC and ITN colleagues work for Al Jazeera, and this is the latest in a long and shameful tale of targeted Israeli raids on journalists. In May I paid tribute on behalf of the NUJ to all journalists killed at work, at Workers' Memorial Day in Princes Street Gardens. My words then are appropriate today: 'The deaths of journalists remind us yet again that the first casualty of war is Truth.'

Sadly many did, then flogged them to City firms who scammed us, and we ended up wanting to gas Sid. ‌ But I think I've found a winner for Labour as they seek to do what everyone knows they need to do but are too scared to: force those whose wealth has soared since the bankers' crisis to share some of their fortune with our skint Treasury. They should put posters in City clubs, adverts across right-wing media and project images on to all the HQs of FTSE 100 companies saying: 'Be more like Gary.' Let me explain. Gary Grant who owns Britain's biggest toy retailer The Entertainer is retiring and giving his £80million business to the firm's 1,900 workers. He is transferring ownership of the family's 160-shop chain to an employee trust, meaning staff get to share the profits and decide its future, rather than flog it to cost-slashing corporate hawks. 'If the business had been sold just for money that would not have been passing on the baton in the way the family wanted,' said the practising Christian, with one of the delighted workers saying: 'He always looks after us. It's a typical Gary thing to do.' 'Gary things' have happened before. In 2019, Julian Richer handed control of his audio chain Richer Sounds to staff, giving them 60% of his shares, triggering a windfall of around £4million. ‌ Also challenging the stereotype of the vampire capitalist obsessed with multi-million pound bonuses is a selfless group called Patriotic Millionaires UK, who are campaigning for people like them to pay more tax. They point out that the top 10% owns 57% of the UK's wealth, while the bottom half owns less than 5%, and believe making those at the top pay more tax would drive down inequality and help rebuild Broken Britain. They also dismiss as a myth the notion that Labour is driving out the rich, pointing out that 'less than 0.3%' of the country's three million millionaires are projected to emigrate. ‌ The likes of Gary Grant, Julian Richer and the Patriotic Millionaires should have a seat in the Cabinet to advise Labour how to incentivise other CEOs and millionaires to 'do a Gary thing.' These are the people who understand that success and happiness is not defined by the width of your wallet but the depth of your compassion. That the most patriotic thing you can do is share your wealth with the people who helped you make it. Patriotic Millionaires (motto: 'Proud to pay, here to stay') also point to a recent poll carried out by Survation which claimed 80% of millionaires support a 2% wealth tax on assets over £10million. Why don't Labour test that? Why not hold a summit with the CBI, invite prominent millionaires, and call on them all to 'do the Gary thing'. Then name and stain the non-patriotic refuseniks. Maybe if Labour can't soak the rich into paying more, it's time to shame them into it.

There may have been calls for disgraced Prince Andrew to lose his remaining royal titles - but royal expert Jennie Bond doesn't believe it will happen After a flood of new lurid claims about Prince Andrew were revealed in a bombshell book, the disgraced Duke of York has faced calls for his titles to be stripped. ‌ Research has found that the majority of the public would back the removal of his York dukedom, as well as his princely title. It comes after the biography called Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the Yorks' by Andrew Lownie, which finally hit shelves this week, delved into the private life of the late Queen's son, depicting him as sex obsessed, a "useful idiot" and easy prey for Jeffrey Epstein. ‌ For his titles to be removed, legislation would be required for Parliament to prevent Andrew from continuing as the Duke of York. At the same time, his birthright to be a prince, as the son of a monarch, could be changed if a Letters Patent were issued by the King. ‌ READ MORE: Prince Andrew 'caught in foul-mouthed tirade' in speed bumps row near Royal Lodge But even though Jennie Bond believes Andrew has damaged the monarchy's reputation, she doubts his titles will be taken. The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror: "He has already been sacked by his mother, stripped of his military appointments and banned from using his HRH in any official capacity. "His brother, the King, has cut off his allowance and his security costs and wants him out of Royal Lodge. You could argue that he has already paid a hefty price. But opinion polls continue to show that he is deeply disliked, and the public wants to see him squirm. "I'm not sure that taking his Dukedom away would serve any great purpose, other than making the King look particularly vindictive, and causing Parliament to spend time on an issue that doesn't affect the rest of us: MPs surely have better things to do?" Andrew stepped away from public duties in 2019 amid the furore over his friendship with Epstein following his Newsnight interview and stopped using His Royal Highness. ‌ But despite no longer being a working royal, he has appeared at family events. Just earlier this year, he joined the King and several other senior royals for their traditional Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel in Windsor. So, is there any way Andrew could somehow claw himself back into public acceptance? For Jennie, this time has long gone. She added: "His best course of action is to lie low, enjoy the immensely privileged lifestyle he still has, embrace his family life, and do as his brother asks. ‌ "If he is still invited to family gatherings, he would do well to forego the protocol of walking in order of precedence and fade quietly into the background. In other words: show a bit of humility, Andrew, because we haven't seen a shred of it yet. "For his two daughters, this latest slew of lurid allegations must be hard to take. They have done nothing wrong and are popular with the rest of the family — and with much of the public."
