Thirteen children injured after rollercoaster derails in 100-year-old amusement park

Thirteen children and one adult were injured on Wednesday when a rollercoaster derailed at Welsh amusement park.
Children were left suspended above the ground and had to be rescued after the "Wacky Worm" ride came off the rails at Coney Beach Pleasure Park in Porthcawl, South Wales.
As the incident occurred, children were "screaming" and safety railings fell from the side of the tracks, witnesses said.
Emergency services took seven children to hospital, including one who had reportedly had his teeth knocked out during the derailment.
Megan Louise Cavanagh, from Bridgend, was visiting the park with her two children and friends and family who also brought their children, when the accident happened.
"We were standing next to the caterpillar ride when we heard a massive bang, and the fence around it fell and landed on my back, hit my head and the pram, which had my friend's one-year-old in it, and as I pushed it away all we could hear was kids screaming and crying.
"You could see some of them sitting up and they had blood pouring out of their noses, and they were all crying."
The incident comes just weeks before the pleasure park, which opened in 1918, is due to close its gates for good. The park will close in October to make way for a new development including restaurants, shops and houses.
In a statement, Coney Beach Pleasure Park said the Wacky Worm was a "third-party ride", which it did not own, and that the police told them to clear the site for further investigation.
"We apologise for the disruption and will be providing refunds to affected guests as soon as possible," the park said.
South Wales Police told The Independent: "Officers were called to Coney Beach Amusement Park, Porthcawl, at around 5:50pm yesterday evening, Wednesday August 13, following an accident involving one of the rides.
"At this time, we can confirm that 13 children and one adult have sustained minor injuries. Some of these have required hospital treatment.
"The amusement park will remain closed today whilst officers and health and safety personnel carry out their investigation."
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson told The Independent: 'We were called yesterday, shortly before 18:00 to reports of an incident at Coney Beach, Porthcawl.
'We sent three emergency ambulances, three Cymru high acuity response unit paramedics, two duty operational managers and our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene.
'Seven patients were taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.'
A spokesperson from the government's Health and Safety Executive told The Independent: "We are aware of this incident and are being supported by South Wales Police. Our inspectors are attending the site today to commence enquiries."

The £10 million Welsh business park that still has no businesses in it

In a rural area near the Welsh town of Bridgend on the borders of the Vale of Glamorgan, there is currently a series of unused roads and pavements that lead to nowhere. Nestled between the M4 and A48, Brocastle Business Park was built to give an economic boost to the area, with the £10 million site funded by the Welsh Government with the aim of creating thousands of jobs. However, despite the numerous plots of land being ready and waiting to be filled by businesses, there is no hum of machinery or chatter of workers here at the moment, but instead an eerie silence as none of the land has yet been used. READ MORE: Police issue statement over Merthyr Tydfil 'stabbing' that saw road closed READ MORE: The Welsh school with the best A level results in the UK Brocastle Business Park was completed in November of 2021 on land next to the A48, around five miles away from junction 35 of the M4. It was built with Welsh Government funding to provide a 'substantial stimulus to employment opportunities' with outline planning consent for up to 770,000sq feet of floor space. The works were carried out by a local civil engineering contractor and funded with more than £10 million from the Welsh Government, including around £6.2 million awarded through the European Regional Development Fund. An additional £2 million was also given to the project to link the new employment site to Waterton with an Active Travel Route. At the time of the opening, the then Minister for Economy Vaughan Gething said the 'significant investment' had been made for the plans that he hoped would lead to the creation of many new jobs. However, despite the completion of key roads and provision for nine plots at the site, as of August 2025, none appear to have been used with marketing agents still showing them as being available. Local Community Councillor Keith Hughes said he like others felt the area was still in need of more jobs adding that he hoped the investment at the site would eventually pay off. A response from Welsh Government said they were still confident that this would be the case, with negotiations on two of the plots currently taking place and others being 'actively marketed'. They said: 'Since substantial completion of the development plots, Brocastle has received a number of serious enquiries from interested parties. 'We are currently negotiating offers on two of the nine plots, one to a developer and one to an owner occupier. 'The remaining plots continue to be actively marketed by commercial property agents and have been attracting steady interest. 'We remain confident that the site will attract further investment to Bridgend and be home to many new jobs in the coming years.' Woman's Arm Amputated After Tree Falls on Her in Freak Mini Golf Accident While Celebrating Her Son's 13th Birthday

Adela Magaña, 53, and her family made a last-minute decision to go mini-golfing in an attempt to make her son's birthday more fun NEED TO KNOW A California woman had her arm amputated after a palm tree fell on her at Golf N' Stuff mini golf course in Ventura on Aug. 6 Adela Magaña, 53, was at the mini golf course with her family shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time when the incident occurred She was there that day to celebrate her son's 13th birthday A California woman's arm was amputated following a freak accident during what was supposed to be a fun family outing. Adela Magaña, 53, was celebrating her son's 13th birthday at Golf N' Stuff mini golf course in Ventura, Calif., shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time on Aug. 6, when a palm tree fell on her, per local news outlet VC Star. The mother of four was sitting on a bench watching others play when the accident occurred, according to the outlet. 'I was going to go look for the ball, and [...] I heard a screeching sound — like a branch breaking,' Magaña's son, Junior, 22, told VC Star. 'I thought nothing of it, but then I heard a big old thump, and people were running toward my mom.' Junior and his father, Amando, along with two other people, ran to lift the tree — which was about 40 feet long — off Adela. "After that, we went straight into stopping the bleeding,' Junior recalled. 'We got a belt, used it as a tourniquet, held it and had other people call 911.' Junior also said that the family hadn't even planned to be at the course that day, noting that it had been a last-minute decision. "We were trying to make [my brother's] birthday a little bit better because it was mid-week, and we didn't know what to do. We thought of something fast: play mini golf and then go have dinner afterward. But we never got to dinner," he recalled. Adela was treated by Ventura City Fire Department officials on the scene and then transported to the Ventura County Medical Center, where surgeons ultimately determined that her right arm needed to be amputated just below the shoulder. She had surgery on Aug. 7, per VC Star. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Adela's daughter, Nancy, said her mom, who manufactures bolts at an automotive racing products company, now has a 'long road' to recovery. 'She's a very strong woman — even at this point. She's not able to talk, but she's able to nod her head. She has a long journey ahead of her,' she said while speaking to the outlet. Nancy also said that her younger brother, 13-year-old Damien, will also need to heal from the trauma of the event on his birthday. 'It's a lot to take in as a 13-year-old to witness that. It's always going to be there for him,' she said. PEOPLE reached out to the Ventura City Fire Department for comment on Friday, Aug. 15, but did not receive an immediate response. In an email to PEOPLE, Kevin Martin, general manager at Golf N' Stuff's Ventura location, said that the course was shut down following the incident for 'precautionary reasons' and will reopen after consulting with a licensed arborist. He also provided an official statement from the business, which stated, 'Golf N' Stuff Ventura has always, and will continue to make safety for its valued guests its top priority." 'Through this recent event we were reminded how unpredictable and unforgiving Mother Nature can be at times. Rather than simply be humbled by her unpredictability, we aim to be proactive moving forward to ensure safety for all,' they said. 'We will be aligning ourselves even more with our licensed Arborist and Tree Service to give us the knowledge we need.' They continued, 'Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Magaña and her family. Updates have told us that she has been a warrior in her recovery.' Read the original article on People
