New Zealand woman arrested after 2-year-old girl found alive in suitcase stowed in bus luggage

Associated Press19 hours ago
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A New Zealand woman was arrested on a child neglect charge Sunday after a bus driver found a 2-year-old girl alive in a suitcase that was stowed in the vehicle's luggage compartment, authorities said.
The bus driver noticed movement inside the bag during a planned stop at the settlement of Kaiwaka, north of Auckland, after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment, Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said in a statement.
When the driver opened the suitcase they discovered the 2-year-old girl, who was very hot but otherwise appeared physically unharmed, Harrison said.
The child was taken to a hospital, where she remained Sunday night local time.
The arrested woman was charged with ill-treatment or neglect of a child and was due to appear in court Monday. She was not named by law enforcement.

New chief constable pledges ‘exceptional policing' on first day

The new chief constable for Hampshire police has pledged to deliver 'exceptional policing' as he starts in the role. Alexis Boon has joined the force from the Metropolitan Police, where he led commands in local policing, specialist crime and counter terrorism. His arrival follows former chief constable Scott Chilton's departure after the Echo revealed he was facing a probe for not disclosing a past relationship with a junior officer. Mr Chilton quit in April after being told he was under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct for gross misconduct. Speaking on his first day in the role, Mr Boon said he is keen for the force to focus on listening to and working with communities in the county. 'Engaging with purpose will help us prevent crime and bring more criminals to justice', he said. He added: 'I joined policing because I firmly believe in public service. 'I know the exceptional officers, staff and volunteers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight share my commitment to be there for our communities, especially when they need us most.' She added that his 'wealth of experience' will be a huge advantage to the force. She said: 'We are a large force but we are still under capacity for the amount of officers we have for our communities. 'Recruitment is a major priority and I've urged Alexis to ensure the officers I have already funded are on our streets as quickly as possible. 'We are both clear that our aim, going forward, is to drive up charge rates, protect communities and get more bobbies on the beat. 'Together we want to make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the safest places to live, work and visit.'

The officers found eight people were shot upon their arrival. One man was declared dead at the scene and seven others were taken to the hospital. One woman later died from her injuries while at the hospital. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The LAPD couldn't confirm that the party was related to the Hard Summer music festival, though the Los Angeles Times reported that a social media post promoting the event referred to the celebration as an after party for the festival.
