Marseille Get Their Passports Out To Prepare Champions League Return
French giants Marseille have not been involved in European competition this season but such is their determination to get back onto the continental stage that coach Roberto De Zerbi and his players are already embarking on some foreign travel.
De Zerbi has been dissatisfied with his team's performances in recent weeks, even though Marseille are second in the Ligue 1 table with four games remaining, meaning they are on course to qualify for next season's Champions League.
They had suffered five defeats in seven games before last week's 5-1 home win over bottom side Montpellier, and the five teams immediately beneath them in the standings are all currently within four points.
That means 1993 Champions League winners Marseille, who finished eighth last season, have no margin for error in their attempts to return to Europe.
So Italian coach De Zerbi has opted for a typically Italian approach to focusing his players' minds for the run-in, taking the squad away on a training camp -- a "ritiro" in Italian, meaning "retreat" -- to prepare for the season's final furlong.
And in keeping with the Italian theme, De Zerbi and his squad jetted off on Tuesday of this week to Italy.
They set up base in a five-star hotel in Rome and have been training north of the capital, in a small stadium on the banks of the Tiber, while also paying a visit to the Vatican on Wednesday.
"We decided we would try everything as we attempt to achieve our objective" of Champions League qualification, said De Zerbi after the game against Montpellier.
"It is not a punishment" for his players, he added. "It is just a way to try to bring us together."
They will be back in Marseille ahead of Sunday's home meeting with Brest, before possibly returning to Italy again.
"The only thing that counts is the match against Brest," said president Pablo Longoria in a club statement.
"The decision to go away on a training camp was taken collectively, at a time when every little detail can make the difference."
Mason Greenwood, Adrien Rabiot and the rest of the Marseille squad will hope a few days in the Italian sunshine can help spur them on as they attempt to finish as best of the rest in France behind champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Belgian striker, 20, was the star for Saint-Etienne in a 2-1 derby victory over Lyon last weekend which came as a huge boost in their battle to avoid relegation.
He was also at the centre of controversy as, before going on to score the winner, Stassin was shown a red card for a nasty foul on Corentin Tolisso. The Lyon player was stretchered off injured, but the punishment was reduced to yellow following a VAR check, provoking fury in the away ranks.
Former Anderlecht youngster Stassin signed from Westerlo in his homeland in August for a fee of around 10 million euros ($11.4m). He didn't score in any of his first 11 appearances for Saint-Etienne, but has now found the net 12 times in 16 Ligue 1 games since mid-December.
That includes nine in the last nine matches, and Les Verts are hoping Stassin can keep on firing them towards survival.

European champions Paris Saint-Germain suffered a shock 1-0 Club World Cup defeat to Brazilian side Botafogo on Thursday after Lionel Messi lit up the tournament with a brilliant free-kick winner for Inter Miami. Atletico Madrid and Palmeiras also won as the second round of group matches began, but it was Botafogo who stole the headlines. A first-half goal from Igor Jesus proved the difference as last year's Copa Libertadores winners all but sealed a place in the knockout rounds from Group B in front of 53,699 fans at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California. PSG are one of the favourites for FIFA's 32-team tournament after a dazzling season which culminated with a scintillating 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final. But their hopes of securing a victory which would have seen them become the first side into the last 16 were stymied by a resilient performance from their opponents from Rio de Janeiro. "A lot of people wondered, but we showed how strong Botafogo is," goalscorer Jesus said after the win, which kept all of South America's representatives unbeaten at the competition in the United States. "It was a difficult game and we had to defend well, and we did our job and scored a goal." Botafogo took the lead against the run of play on 36 minutes as Jefferson Savarino's through ball split the PSG defence and released Jesus. He then did brilliantly to wrongfoot the covering Willian Pacho before sweeping a shot that took a slight deflection past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on its way into the net. "We knew it was going to be a very difficult match -- they defended very well," said PSG coach Luis Enrique. Paris Makes Clean Water Bet For River Seine Bathers
A year on from athletes competing in the River Seine during the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, French authorities guarantee the water will be safe for the public to swim in this summer. Parisians and tourists will be able to dive into the river from July 5, weather permitting, according to authorities. The public will be able to access three bathing sites at bras Marie in the heart of the historic centre, the Grenelle district in the west of Paris, as well as Bercy in the east. Last year, water treatment stations, holding tanks and connections to the Parisian boat sanitation system were installed. "For the Games, we cleaned up three quarters of the Seine. And the water was 100 percent ready for bathing on dry days," said Marc Guillaume, the prefect for the Ile-de-France region that includes Paris. According to Guillaume, the top state-appointed official for the region, the new bathing zones will be popular. This year, the weather is predicted to be drier than the record rainfall during the Games, which had led to the cancellation of six of the eleven competitions held the river. "It was an extraordinary moment (in 2024), but swimming during the Games was not an end in itself," Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had told reporters in May. "Making the Seine swimmable is first and foremost a response to the objective of adapting to climate change, but also of quality of life," she added. Last year, Hidalgo dove into the Seine in front of journalists from around the world before the Games began. The historic swim signalled the end of years of efforts to clean the Seine and the river which flows into it, the Marne. Work had started in the 1990s, with an initial investment of more than nine billion euros (10.4 billion dollars) from the greater Paris sanitation authorities. Following initial efforts, the "bathing plan" leading up to the 2024 Paris Games was launched in 2016. The French state and local authorities had invested another 1.4 billion euros (1.6 billion dollars). The plan was focused on preventing the city's waste waters from flowing into the Seine. The mid-19th century Parisian sewage system often overflows on rainy days, causing rain and waste waters to pour into the river. Flags will inform bathers about pollution levels in the water every day, and if it rains the sites will likely close on the day after, said Paris city official Pierre Rabadan. "We're not tossing a coin, we're relying on scientific data," he said, adding that no athlete had fallen ill after swimming in the river last summer. The presence of the fecal bacteria escherichia coli (E. coli) and enterococci in the Seine will be assessed daily using live sensors and samples. According to the association France Nature Environment Ile-de-France, the planned tests are "insufficient". There are "many viruses which cannot be tested for" in the Seine, said honorary president of the association Michel Riottot. Swallowing too much water from the river could lead a person to catch hepatitis, gastroenteritis or skin diseases, former research engineer Riottot told AFP. Chemical pollution will not be measured either, added Riottot. "If there is occasional pollution upstream, we will be informed, so we will be able to take necessary measures," said Rabadan. The number of species of fish in the Seine increased from four in 1970 to thirty-six reported in February -- a sign that water sanitation has improved over the years. In early June, the Paris City Council gave legal rights and a personhood status to the Seine to protect its fragile ecosystem, as part of a global movement to grant legal personhood to nature. Co-owned by former England international David Beckham, Inter Miami played their first MLS match in 2020 and signed Messi in 2023, raising their profile significantly. This was the first competitive victory for an MLS side over European opposition, in their second encounter after Chelsea beat Los Angeles FC earlier in the week. "It's a huge joy, the whole team made a big effort, we worked really well," Messi told DAZN. "It's a really important win for us and we have to enjoy it... Inter Miami levelled right at the start of the second half, with Segovia blasting home Marcelo Weigandt's inviting cut-back to stun the Portuguese side. Messi then sent Miami ahead with a goal all of his own making after 54 minutes. The playmaker was brought down outside the area and dusted himself down before arrowing a classic Messi free-kick into the top right corner. "(Messi) is a leader, he's the player he is, he's the greatest player in the world," Inter Miami forward Fafa Picault told DAZN. "I had a feeling (the free-kick) was going in. That was a great goal, a great show of leadership and coming in a clutch moment for us." Miami battled hard to keep Porto at bay and groans travelled around the stadium after seven minutes of stoppage time was announced.
