British trawler crew is intercepted and detained by France - just hours before Starmer surrendered to EU over fishing in UK waters

A British-flagged fishing boat was intercepted and detained in French waters on Saturday - less than 48 hours before the UK government was accused of 'surrendering' to the EU over fishing rights. The Francesca TO 80 was spotted 30 nautical miles - or 55 kilometres - off the island of Batz. It was then escorted to the port of Brest at dawn yesterday after inspectors suspected the crew of unlicensed fishing in French waters. This constitutes an offense under the Rural and Maritime Fishing Code. French prosecutors have opened a probe and are yet to decide what action to take. The trawler is registered to an address in Truro, Cornwall, according to media outlet Ouest France. The incident came just days before the UK and EU struck a landmark deal over access to fishing waters. European trawlers will now be granted access to British waters for a further 12 years under the agreement announced earlier today. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa at a summit in Lancaster House, London, to seal the deal. British fishermen had been calling for a reduction in the EU's quota. The Brexit deal, reached under Boris Johnson, saw the UK regain 25 per cent of EU fishing quotas, but this was set to run out next year. But the bloc will now maintain unfettered access to the UK's coastal waters till 2038. The UK will carry on agreeing annual quotas with the EU and Norway. Licences will be issued to control who fishes in British waters. Elspeth MacDonald, who serves as chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen's Federation, described the accord as a 'horror show'. The issue was believed to be a key stumbling bloc in negotiations, with a breakthrough finally arriving last night. Reform UK's Nigel Farage said the 12-year deal on access for European boats 'will be the end of the fishing industry'. Farage's deputy leader Richard Tice said: 'Labour surrenders. Brussels bureaucrats win again.' The Francesca TO 80 isn't the first British trawler to have been apprehended in recent years amid the ongoing tension over post-Brexit fishing rights. The Cornelis Gert Jan, which is owned by MacDuff Shellfish of Scotland, was detained in 2021. Cyrille Fournier, the deputy prosecutor of Le Havre, where the boat was seized, said its skipper had been asked to appear in court on August 11, 2022, accused of operating in French territorial waters without a valid permit. 'The captain of the vessel did not have the authorisation required to fish in the French exclusive economic zone,' he said. Its owner insists it had been operating legally.

Nice take Champions League place, Saint-Etienne relegated in French season finale

Nice beat Brest 6-0 on the final night of the French season to secure fourth place in Ligue 1 and qualify for next season's Champions League (Sylvain THOMAS) Nice romped to a six-goal win to secure Champions League qualification on the final night of the French season on Saturday, as Saint-Etienne were condemned to relegation back to the second tier. Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain had already clinched the title while Marseille and Monaco wrapped up qualification for Europe's elite club competition before the Ligue 1 campaign reached its climax. Advertisement However, one more spot at the continent's top table remained up for grabs on the last day with fourth-placed Nice in pole position to take it if they could hold off the challengers of Lille, Strasbourg and Lyon. The Ineos-owned club made sure of a top-four place by crushing Brest 6-0 on the Cote d'Azur with Gaetan Laborde scoring twice. Ivorian international Evann Guessand put Nice in front with his 12th Ligue 1 goal this season, with Badredine Bouanani later netting a penalty before Terem Moffi and Ali Abdi also hit the target towards the end. Nice will enter next season's Champions League in the third qualifying round in early August and will have to win two two-legged ties to make it to the league stage. Advertisement Lille finish fifth and go into the Europa League after substitute Chuba Akpom's late penalty secured a 2-1 win at home to Reims, while Strasbourg suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss against Le Havre in a result which created a stunning late twist in the relegation battle. Le Havre needed to win and hope one of Reims or Nantes lost in order to escape the drop zone, and the Normandy side showed remarkable resolve to come from behind twice before snatching victory in extraordinary fashion. Abdoulaye Toure's second penalty of the game, in the ninth minute of stoppage time, propelled Le Havre out of the drop zone and means Reims will go into a play-off against second-tier Metz for the right to play in Ligue 1 next season. Reims will now have to navigate the two legs of that tie either side of next weekend's French Cup final against PSG. Advertisement - Lacazette's 200th Lyon goal - Strasbourg's defeat allowed Lyon to climb above them and take sixth place as they beat Angers 2-0 with Alexandre Lacazette scoring twice. The former Arsenal striker's brace allowed him to reach a double-century of goals for his boyhood club as he now prepares to leave Lyon, the club where he made his Ligue 1 debut in 2010. Lyon are guaranteed European football next season and will be in the Europa League if PSG win the French Cup, which would mean Strasbourg go into the Conference League. Saint-Etienne needed a positive result as well as favours from elsewhere in order to avoid being relegated but they slumped to a 3-2 loss at home against Toulouse. Lassine Sinayoko put Auxerre ahead as the visitors threatened to spoil PSG's title party, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored twice in the second half for the hosts either side of a Marquinhos header. Goncalo Ramos also had a penalty saved. Marseille made sure of finishing second as they beat Rennes 4-2 at the Velodrome with Mason Greenwood scoring twice, including once from the penalty spot, while Adrien Rabiot also grabbed a brace. Advertisement Greenwood scored 21 goals in his debut Ligue 1 season to finish as the division's joint-top marksman alongside PSG's Ousmane Dembele. Third-placed Monaco slumped to a 4-0 loss at Lens, for whom Neil El Aynaoui netted twice, while Nantes ensured their safety by defeating relegated Montpellier 3-0. as/iwd

Eric Roy extends as Brest head coach

Eric Roy has extended his contract as Brest head coach, the Ligue 1 club has announced this Friday. Roy would have been a free agent at the expiry of his contract next June. The former OGC Nice and Sunderland midfielder has agreed to a two-year extension with Les Pirates. Roy will therefore continue as Brest head coach until 2027. On Saturday, Brest will play their final game of the Ligue 1 season away at Nice. Roy led Brest to unprecedented heights. He joined the Brittany club in early 2023 and was tasked to lift Brest above the relegation zone, which he brilliantly did. The following season, with Brest nailed on to fight again for their survival, Roy defied the odds again, guiding the energetic Pirates to a fantastic third-place finish, thus booking their ticket for the Champions League. Advertisement With Roy at the helm again, Brest did more than hold their own against Europe's elite for their first-ever continental competition. They eventually fell to finalists PSG in the playoff rounds. In Ligue 1, despite the strain of ten Champions League games, Brest have worked their way to 8th in the standings. GFFN | Bastien Cheval

MMC, Allegheny College partner on registered nursing classes

Meadville Medical Center (MMC) and Allegheny College are collaborating on curriculum needs for MMC's registered nursing school. Starting with the fall 2025 semester, Allegheny College will offer core college-level coursework required for registered nursing students who attend the Sharon School of Nursing at Meadville Medical Center. The accredited registered nursing school became part of MMC's Institute for Healthcare Professionals in 2024. Allegheny College's courses are to the underlying foundation on health-related topics such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, medical ethics and psychology as well as required college-level writing and math, according to officials. Specialized nursing instruction and hands-on clinical training for the student registered nurses will be through Meadville Medical Center. "Since health care touches all of our lives, it's exciting to infuse critical and creative thinking, problem-solving and exposure to exceptional Allegheny College faculty into the training of future health care professionals,' Jennifer Dearden, Allegheny College's provost said. "Our goal since we took over the School of Nursing was to partner with a premier institute for higher education," Valerie Waid, MMC's chief nurse executive, said in a statement. "Allegheny College has always been at the top of our list, and I cannot be happier to finalize this collaboration." MMC and Allegheny have had a long relationship of college students and faculty working with the hospital. Allegheny students have worked with hospital patients on care plans and acted as health advocates while the school's faculty has worked with MMC staff. Dearden said new collaboration will strengthen the region's workforce and economic development. In 2024, Meadville Medical Center took over the Sharon School of Nursing when its then owner, Steward Health Care System, filed for bankruptcy. The inaugural registered nursing class under MMC that begins in September will have 30 students, according to Crystal Brest, a registered nurse and the director of the Sharon School of Nursing. The registered nursing school program takes 20 months to complete, Brest said. When completed, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed the NCLEX exam to test the competency of nursing school graduates in the U.S. and Canada. "We had 85 applications for the fall (of 2025) and 23 candidates have been selected so far," she said. "We'll limit the class at 30 (total) due to clinical instruction needs." Though registration for this fall is closed, the school is accepting applications for its session that starts in September 2026, Brest said. The Sharon Regional School of Nursing has maintained its accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). ACEN Board of Commissioners also approved the change in ownership from Sharon to Meadville in December 2024. MMC has been working with Penn State Shenango, Thiel College and Sharon Regional Medical Center administration, classroom and clinical sites to remain in place to support curriculum needs of the current Sharon nursing students to meet their May 2026 graduation requirements.
