‘It's OK to be different': Gwent author champions Disability Pride
Gavin, 43, a children's author, speaker and songwriter, known as 'The Disabled Writer,' said: 'It's a tremendous honour, not just for me personally, but for what it represents.'
The former South Wales Argus employee, who uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device to support his speech, spoke about his journey of living with Cerebral Palsy and the challenges it brings, using AI-voice assistive technology.
The author of 'Cerebral Palsy & Me' said: 'It's OK to be different. Accept yourself, and accept others too.
'This event is a crucial platform for advocacy and awareness and a chance to reflect, to challenge, and to celebrate what it really means to be disabled and proud in Wales today.'
'For me, it's a time to celebrate everything we are, while also pushing for the change we still need.'
Disability Pride Month was a grass roots movement, which began in Boston, USA in 1990. It started as a day of celebration which grew into a month and is marked worldwide.
The event's sponsor, Mark Isherwood, MS and chairman of the Senedd's cross party group on disability, said: 'Although Disability Pride Month is vibrant, joyful, unapologetic and inclusive, it is also a call to action, because pride isn't just about celebration—it's about change. It's about removing barriers, transforming attitudes, and creating a society where disabled people can thrive.'

Second album release after death of Shirebrook singer with ME

Actress Ruth Jones to guest present The Archers Podcast
The Welsh actress will be joined by Archers cast members Charlotte Martin (Susan Carter) and Wilf Scolding (Chris Carter), along with Sarah McDonald Hughes, the writer of this week's episodes. The podcast will be available exclusively on BBC Sounds from 7.15pm on Friday. Jones, who co-wrote and co-starred in Gavin & Stacey, described herself as a 'massive Archers addict'. In the podcast she delves into the Carter family's complex history, including Chris's turbulent relationship with Alice and a powerful archive flashback to his birth in 1988, when he was born with a unilateral cleft lip and rejected by his mother. Jones also picks her two favourite scenes of the week, reveals her favourite quirky Archers character traits, and poses some burning questions about unresolved storylines in the fictional village of Ambridge. Jones said: 'I've been an avid fan of The Archers since the early 90s. 'Despite being an actress and writer myself, the thought of actually being in The Archers, or writing it, absolutely terrifies me because in my mind Ambridge really exists.' The Archers Podcast is released weekly every Friday, immediately after The Archers is broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It is usually presented by Emma Freud, who is on holiday this week. Mathew Horne fights back tears over sudden death of Gavin and Stacey colleague
Mathew Horne fought back tears while telling crowds he'd just been told a crew member from Gavin and Stacey had died. The actor, 46, starred as Gavin Shipman in the BBC comedy alongside Joanna Page, James Corden, and Ruth Jones since it began in 2007 until its final episode on Christmas Day 2024. He explained: 'In 2019, before the Christmas special – part one of the finale if you like – aired, I lost my mother and Alison really stepped up and she became my surrogate mother off screen as well. 'Whenever she texts me even now she signs it 'Mum'. And that is cool. That is so beautiful. And she says, 'How are you, my little prince?' It means the world to me.' Gavin and Stacey ended on Christmas Day, 2024, with a feature-length episode that attracted a staggering 19.1million viewers. Fans waited five years to find out if Smithy accepted Nessa's proposal to quickly discover he was getting married – but not to her.
