Mathew Horne fights back tears over sudden death of Gavin and Stacey colleague
The actor, 46, starred as Gavin Shipman in the BBC comedy alongside Joanna Page, James Corden, and Ruth Jones since it began in 2007 until its final episode on Christmas Day 2024.
He was being interviewed on stage for an In Conversation With session in Taunton, Somerset, when he suddenly became emotional and told the audience he'd only just received the news when it had been shared on the cast WhatsApp group.
Horne said, via The Sun: 'Sorry. I got distracted. Earlier on… we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s… and I found out via the Whatsapp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there.
'It's really, really sad. I got distracted by losing Rob.
'He was a really lovely guy and he's left a four-year-old behind and that is really, really, really sad.'
Horne also shared how close the cast had become since bonding 'like a family' over the last 18 years. For the main actors, their lives changed beyond recognition and the show became one of the most popular British comedies of all time.
He explained: 'In 2019, before the Christmas special – part one of the finale if you like – aired, I lost my mother and Alison really stepped up and she became my surrogate mother off screen as well.
'Whenever she texts me even now she signs it 'Mum'. And that is cool. That is so beautiful. And she says, 'How are you, my little prince?' It means the world to me.'
Gavin and Stacey ended on Christmas Day, 2024, with a feature-length episode that attracted a staggering 19.1million viewers.
Fans waited five years to find out if Smithy accepted Nessa's proposal to quickly discover he was getting married – but not to her.
Instead, the episode followed Smithy gearing up to marry Sonia – his insufferable girlfriend who his friends and family couldn't stand. Thankfully, fans got their happy ending, Smithy jilted Sonia at the aisle and raced across the country to find Nessa and get down on one knee.
There has, however, been talk of potential spin-offs with other characters such as Dawn and Pete, played by Julia Davis and Adrian Scarborough respectively, keeping the spirit of Gavin and Stacey alive.

Blades was arrested on May 3 - the same day wife Lisa publicly announced her decision to end their 18-month marriage. The couple married in Barbados in November 2022 in an intimate beach-front ceremony. It comes after The Sun revealed Blades was separately charged with two counts of rape. West Mercia Police confirmed he will appear in court for those alleged offences next week. A spokesperson said: 'Jason Blades, 55, of Claverley in Shropshire, has been charged with two counts of rape. "He is due to appear at Telford magistrates' court on 13 August 2025.' Blades was awarded an MBE in 2022 for services to craft while King Charles appeared on the Repair Shop the same year. As well as fronting The Repair Shop since 2017, Blades also hosted BBC shows including Money For Nothing and Jay Blades' Home Fix. Lisa Faulkner has teased her secret filming project after she returned to work following her husband John Torode 's BBC axing scandal. Her husband John, 60, was fired from MasterChef after 20 years following an allegation of racism last month, after he revealed he was the subject of a claim that was upheld as part of an inquiry into his co-star Gregg Wallace. While she did not confirm which show she was working on, Lisa, 53, posted a glamorous selfie following a mystery shoot. She wrote: 'Thought I would share a pic of today's shoot. The Australian chef was dramatically axed from MasterChef - hours after the BBC's director general refused to back him over an allegation of racism. The corporation said the host's contract would not be renewed after a report found he had used an 'extremely offensive racist term' during drinks after filming the show. The complaint against John was revealed in the report into co-presenter Gregg's inappropriate behaviour. ITV are standing by under fire John, despite his BBC axing from MasterChef following an allegation of racism (pictured together in 2024) Gregg, 60, was sacked after dozens of complaints against him were upheld. Last month, John identified himself on as an unnamed person in the report who was accused of using 'racist language'. However, the presenter said 'he had absolutely no recollection' of the incident and did 'not believe that it happened'. But in a statement, the BBC said: 'This allegation - which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace - was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm Lewis Silkin. 'The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. 'We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed.' Hours before the announcement, BBC director general Tim Davie had refused to back John and said he expected 'action to be taken' over the allegation. He delivered the remarks as the BBC released its annual report - an occasion overshadowed by controversies for the second year in a row. Last year's was published amid the fallout over news presenter Huw Edwards who pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children. Asked about the John racism row, Tim Davie said: 'The BBC in some ways are quite simple on this - if someone is found to not live up to our values we expect the independent company, Banijay in this case, to take action and report back to us on what they have done. 'These are not BBC employees, but we absolutely expect action to be taken.' Tim added: 'I think a great programme that's loved by audiences is much bigger than individuals. It absolutely can survive and prosper, but we've got to make ing drinks sure we're in the right place in ness terms of the culture of the show.' It had been alleged by a source close to John that he had used an inappropriate racial term during drinks after filming. The witness claimed he had apologised immediately and 'was mortified' and he 'didn't use the term as a slur'. No one complained at the time but the incident was brought up during the inquiry into Gregg, they said. Responding to his sacking, John said: 'I'd hoped that I'd have some say in my exit from a show I've worked on since its relaunch in 2005, but events in the last few says seem to have prevented that.' He said he 'had loved every minute' working on the show but it was 'time to pass the cutlery to someone else'. 'Life is everchanging and ever moving and sometimes personal happiness and fulfilment lay elsewhere,' he added.
