Hindus to become minority in Assam in 10 years: CM Himanta Sarma
'If you compare the demography of Assam in 1951 with that of the present day, it has reached a point where the Assamese and Hindus will become minorities in the next 10 years. We must revive a community staring at extinction,' Sarma told the media.
Reflecting on the past four years, the Chief Minister said they had been years of satisfaction for the BJP-led government, during which several achievements were made despite attempts to derail its efforts.
'We reclaimed 1.29 lakh bighas of land, and this endeavour is ongoing,' he said.
According to Sarma, the reclaimed land at Orang has become a habitat for one-horned rhinoceroses and tigers.
'At Borsola, a solar project has been set up. Elephants have returned to Lumding. The reclaimed land at Burapahar now provides a safe haven for tigers and rhinos. Paikan, once covered with teak plantations, will be green again,' he said, referring to areas cleared of encroachments.

The Hindu Bureau New Delhi Over 6,000 residents of Indira Colony in north-west Delhi have received a temporary reprieve as the Delhi High Court ordered a stay on a demolition drive scheduled for Saturday and directed that no coercive action be taken until the next hearing on July 31. 'None of the required steps were taken,' it said, pointing out that the colony appears as Serial No. 74 on the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board's (DUSIB) list of 675 eligible jhuggi jhopri (JJ) bastis. The protocol mandates that the land-owning agency must send a request to DUSIB, which must examine the eligibility of the basti for rehabilitation. Only if found ineligible, can demolition proceedings begin, the plea said. Appearing for the Northern Railway, the Central government's counsel submitted that the land belongs to the railway and that the occupants were in 'illegal possession'. The eviction notice, the counsel argued, was issued in accordance with the law.

Bengali must on shop signboards & hoardings, says mayor
1 2 Kolkata: City mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday said signboards and hoardings of all commercial establishments, including shops and restaurants, must be written in Bengali, along with other languages. After a "Talk to the Mayor" session, Hakim was asked about some commercial establishments that were continuing with their hoardings in English, Hindi and even Assamese, but not in Bengali. Hakim instructed civic officials to look into the matter and ensure that everyone followed the norm. Last year, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) mandated the use of Bengali language on all commercial signboards, including hoardings, alongside other languages. A deadline of Feb 21, 2025, was set for implementation of the rule. Chairperson Mala Roy, who was presiding over the day's proceedings, asked Hakim to reply in Bengali. Monalisa raised civic issues like water pipeline leakage, water supply disruptions and shortage of labourers.
