Irish family shocked by message from assisted dying clinic

Extra.ie8 hours ago
An Irish family has been left reeling after allegedly receiving a text message from a suicide clinic in Switzerland informing them that their mother was dead, and her ashes would be arriving in the post.
58-year-old Maureen Slough, based in Co Cavan, travelled to the Pegasos clinic on July 8, telling her family she was going to Lithuania with a friend, according to the Irish Independent.
However, the woman's daughter, Megan, says she was shocked when she received a WhatsApp message saying her mother had died listening to gospel music sung by Elvis Presley, while her family believed she was holidaying in Lithuania. Now her family is demanding answers to find out why their mother, who they say attempted suicide a year earlier following the deaths of her two sisters, was able to seek assisted dying without the family being informed.
Her daughter Megan told the Irish Independent that she had to track her mother's ashes through the postal system.
It's reported that after the shock of finding out Ms Slough had travelled alone to Switzerland and paid a reported £13,000 to the Pegasos Swiss Association to facilitate her death two days later, the family began investigating how this could have happened
They were shocked to find that Pegasos accepted their mother's application, considering her long history of mental illness, and claimed the clinic did not inform the family of her plan. But the Pegasos group has allegedly said that it received a letter from Ms Slough's daughter, Megan, saying she was aware of her mother's desire to die and that she had accepted her decision, something Megan has denied.
The clinic also claimed it verified the authenticity of the letter through an email response to Ms Royal, using an email address supplied by her mother, but Megan insists she never wrote such a letter or verified any contact from the clinic, and the family claim their mother may have forged the letter and then verified it using an email address she created herself.
This is not the first time the non-profit assisted dying clinic Pegasos has attracted controversy. Alistair Hamilton with his mother Judith. Pic: ITV
In 2023, Alistair Hamilton, a 47-year-old teacher from the UK, with no diagnosed illness, took his own life at the Swiss clinic, without the knowledge of his family, and after that case, Pegasos reportedly promised it would always contact a person's relatives before carrying out assisted death.
His mother, Judith, later visited the clinic where her son had died to look for answers.
Since 1942, under Swiss Law, people have been allowed to help others to die, as long as their motives are not for personal gain, such as an inheritance or other form of monetary gain.
The law states that the person wishing to die must be of sound mind, but they do not need to be terminally ill or have any medical conditions. The country's assisted suicide clinics are non-profit organisations.
Earlier this year, British MPs voted to change the suicide law in the UK and allow terminally ill people in England and Wales the choice to end their lives.

The devastated dog owner has also revealed that there is a reward offered for information leading to the return of the missing dog. 3 Calvin went missing after the car accident on Monday in Clare Credit: Facebook 3 He is currently in fright flight mode due to being traumatised from the accident Credit: Facebook Ciara Madden, who works at the University Hospital Limerick for the Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service, has revealed that the tourist lost her dog Calvin after being involved in a road traffic collision. The incident occurred in the Kilmurry McMahon area, near the busy Kilrush town, on Monday, when her black Boston terrier ran from her car. After she was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of her injuries, she was unable to look for Calvin, who was last reported to have been seen on Tuesday evening in the area. Talking to ClareFM, Ciara revealed her ordeal of how it led to her beloved dog going missing after the accident. She said: "I came in contact with this lady in a hospital here in University Hospital Limerick on Tuesday. "Now she's actually, it's herself and her husband, they're kind of over and back with the US for a number of years and are actually hoping to make the permanent move to Ireland very soon. "And so before she got into an accident, it was Monday evening, the bank holiday morning, which was August 4th, just outside Kilmurry, McMahon area. "When paramedics came onto the scene, they opened the back door and their little dog ran out the back and unfortunately, it was really, really frightening, obviously. "In spite of everything, the couple, they're doing okay, but their main aim would be to get that lovely dog back." Ciara described that the missing dog is a black and white Boston terrier, that looks like a French kind of bulldog in the face but with a small height, similar to Jack Russell type heights. And in a difficult update since the accident on Monday, Calvin has not been seen since Tuesday at 7pm outside the church in the area. She added: "Unfortunately, yesterday, he hasn't been seen at all. Was seen in that locality, and hopefully, he's still in the locality, but we just want people, I suppose, to keep the eyes and ears out for the little dog, is at all possible." URGENT APPEAL Issuing the appeal to the locals in the area and beyond, Ciara has asked people to keep an eye out and come forward with any type of information about Calvin's whereabouts. If Calvin is hiding for safety, people are urged to check the ditches as they walk and check sheds and barns on their properties. And people are reminded not to attempt to catch, chase or call him as he is currently in fright flight mode due to being traumatised after the accident. Instead, people are encouraged to report sightings of his whereabouts to Margaret O'Brien, a local in the area, on her mobile number 086 201 6378. Alternatively, they can contact the Kilrush Garda Station on 65 908 0550. They can also contact the reception at UHL and ask for Ciara Madden.

The victim's ex-husband was reportedly jailed last year after driving into his dad after a public row POOL TWIST Brit granddad, 62, 'was in RELATIONSHIP with daughter-in-law, 33, he tried to drown in Florida resort pool' A BRITISH grandad accused of trying to drown his own daughter-in-law has been secretly dating her for years, it has been claimed. Mark Gibbon, 62, is charged with attempted murder after allegedly forcing Jasmine Wyld's head underwater at a Florida resort pool as the pair argued over his will. 7 Mark Gibbon, 62, has been charged with the attempted murder of his daughter-in-law Credit: Polk County Sheriff's Office/PA Wire 7 Mum-of-two Jasmine Wyld has been in a two-year relationship with Gibbon, a family source claimed Credit: Facebook 7 Gibbon and Wyld have been pictured together on several occasions since their separations to their partner Credit: Facebook Gibbon and Wyld, 33, are both believed to have denied being in a romantic relationship when quizzed by police, The Sun can reveal. They were reportedly asked due to investigators seeing if it involved potential domestic violence. But a family source revealed to the MailOnline the pair grew close to one another after they both split from their partners. They soon got into into a relationship and have now been together for the past two years, according to the source. They said: "Mark and Jasmine have been seeing each other for a few years, but they've never admitted it. "[The couple] do an awful lot together and they go away on holiday with the children a couple of times every year. "They went to Florida two years ago and have been to Budapest where she posted pictures of them together like a couple." Wyld - a hairdresser - separated from Gibbon's son Alex, 34, back in 2021 but the pair still share two young children together. Gibbon divorced his wife and lives alone at a £800,000 semi-detached home in Beaconsfield he purchased in 2023. The secret couple are alleged to spend a lot of time inside the large Buckinghamshire home together. Alex has had several major issues with his dad in the past including being jailed in 2024 for driving into Gibbon with an £80,000 Porsche Cayenne. The pair also became embroiled in a public row in 2023 after Alex left his dad's business for an unknown reason. The family source confirmed that Alex and Gibbon no longer speak. They added: "He feels an awful betrayal at how his dad has struck up a relationship with the mother of his two children." Gibbon is now behind bars over a separate family falling out with Wyld. The couple were on holiday at the Solterra Resort in Devenport, near Disney World, Florida with the two children. Gibbon and Wyld soon began arguing over the "stipulations of his will" around a pool, according to US police. The granddad then pushed Jasmine's head "under the water and held her down multiple times", according to the arrest affidavit. She told cops after the ordeal she "could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown," according to Polk's County Sheriff's Office. 7 Wyld and Gibbon's son Alex share two children together Credit: Facebook 7 The secret couple are alleged to spend a lot of time inside Gibbon's large Buckinghamshire home together Credit: Facebook 7 Wyld was saved by her daughter and two neighbours after Gibbon allegedly forced her head underwater Credit: Facebook According to deputies, Jasmine was forced to "fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under". Her nine-year-old daughter then tried to help despite having no idea what was going on as she leapt into the water to her mother's defence She tried desperately to intervene, but Gibbon allegedly kept pushing her away. Jasmine spotted some two women in the distance and screamed at them to call 911. Gibbon is said to have stopped only when the sisters said they were calling the sheriff's office. He now faces one count of attempted murder and two counts of battery. The family source admitted the pair had been through troubling times of late. They said: "But I have been told that Jasmine was unhappy that they have been in a relationship for a few years and she is not named in his will." When questioned, Gibbon allegedly admitted to pushing Jasmine underwater, but insisted he hadn't been trying to drown her. He claimed they had been drinking, began arguing and that she slapped him - which triggered the fight, reports Law & Crime. Gibbon is a lighting technician, who runs his own firm called MRG Lighting. He has worked on music videos for Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith, according to his website, as well as on film and TV sets. He is also listed as the only director of Sage Hairdressing. The Sun has reached out to Gibbon for comment.

Two teens arrested after brutal street attack on Irish grandfather and grandson in Majorca

The 18-year-olds, who are also from Ireland, were held after witnesses told police they had seen them kicking and punching their compatriots following an earlier row in a tattoo parlour Two teenagers have been arrested over a brutal street attack on an Irish grandfather and his grandson in a popular Majorcan holiday resort. The 18-year-olds, who are also from Ireland, were held after witnesses told police they had seen them kicking and punching their compatriots following an earlier row in a tattoo parlour. The violent incident occurred in Santa Ponsa near Magaluf. The 71-year-old victim and his grandson aged 20 were taken to hospital, with the elder of the two men needing an emergency operation after suffering several facial fractures. The two tourists held were remanded to a local jail after appearing before a judge in court, although they have since paid €2,000 bail and have been freed while a judicial investigation continues. The Civil Guard has yet to make any official comment about the incident. Respected local paper Diario de Mallorca described the early-hours attack at the end of last month as 'unprovoked' and said it occurred after the Irish teenagers were kicked out of a tattoo parlour in the resort's Ramon de Montcada Street after starting to insult and threaten staff and customers. They are said to have told the men they allegedly went on to physically attack: 'What are you looking at? Do you want a fight?' They reportedly waited outside with six other friends for 40 minutes and ambushed their alleged victims as they walked back to their hotel, continuing to kick and punch them after knocking them to the ground. The assault is said to have occurred outside an unnamed fast food restaurant where witnesses afterwards gave police a description of what had happened. The teenagers, who are still being investigated although they are thought to have been given permission to return to Ireland, spent only a few hours behind bars before managing to stump up their bail bond. At the weekend it emerged an Irish tourist had been involved in a death crash in Santa Ponsa. The 38-year-old was at the wheel of a rental car which collided head-on with a 51-year-old German cyclist in the town on July 31. Police spent nearly half an hour trying to save the man knocked off his bike before paramedics arrived and confirmed he was dead and nothing could be done to revive him. No arrests are believed to have been made although a local judge has opened an investigation into the accident. Unconfirmed reports said the unnamed cyclist, who lived in Majorca, had rode the wrong way into the street where the collision occurred. It happened just before 5pm on July 31 at the intersection of Ramon de Moncada Street and Bartomeu Rossello Planas Street. Santa Ponsa. Photo: Getty News in 90 Seconds - Aug 7th
